Post-Game 13 Thread: Un-Lucky 13

REDS 11, DODGERS 9

I've written about Lucky 13 before. This, however, was quite the opposite for Chad Billingsley, who was staked to a three-run lead before he even took the mound, but then vomited this Jason Marquis-like pile of puke at the Great American Ballpark:

You probably can't read that small text. You probably shouldn't read it, anyway; you can see the amount of run-scoring green-fonted horror from here. Four runs before getting the first out of the frame. Six runs, all of which should have been earned except for a Billingsley throwing error. Bills watched his ERA jump from 5.73 to 7.07, and we all watched what little pebbles of confidence Chad had left get pounded into fine granules of sand right there on the mound. Billingsley was gone by the fourth inning, and the Dodgers were staring at a 6-3 hole that grew to 9-3 before Jon Link could stem the bleeding (one nice highlight was seeing Link, in his debut, show some backbone amidst a weak bullpen).

But the unlucky one wasn't Billingsley, who got off the hook after the Dodgers clawed all the way back to tie it at nine runs apiece, off a towering Matt Kemp 3-run HR in the eighth. Nor was it Ramon Troncoso, who walked two runners in the bottom of the eighth and watched them both score when a Reds reserve hit the game-winning RBI and Ronnie Belliard dropped the ball in a rundown (allowing the 11th Red run). No, the unlucky ones are Dodger fans, who get teased with a six-run comeback and then left alone a split-second later with a stinky loss. Yucch. I need a drink.

Man the lakers are already ignoring the bigs in the post.

Fred's Brim said...

Durantula - great nickname

NicJ said...

nobody on the thunder can guard Pau or drew. why are we ignoring them?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Because, as Mychal Thompson said, they're stupid.

Kyle Baker said...

I like your pebbles/sand metaphor, Sax.

I guess castles made of sand melt into the sea, eventually, eh?

NicJ said...

what the hell? why is fisher the one attacking?

what the hell is going on here?!?!

Josh S. said...

Bynum's playing catcher?

Kyle Baker said...

Dbags up 5-4 over Cards in the 4th.

NicJ said...

durant blew that dunk, haha.

Kyle Baker said...

Cards up 7-5 over Dbags.

I haven't watched any Clippers games in a million years, so this may be a dumb question

Are the lights over the crowd in Staples Center that dim when the Clippers are playing there? Or are they just trying to recreate the lighting of the Forum for the Lakers?

Kyle Baker said...

It's definitely that way on purpose for Lakers games. I can't speak for Clippers games, though, as I haven't been to ones in years.

NicJ said...

no the clips dont do that, an it makes staples look really gross.

Maybe its just my preference,

NicJ said...

Plus the full lights on shows all the empty seats.

NicJ said...

man how many layups are we going to blow tonight.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Yeah, the dim crowd lights work great. They also use it for Kings games.

NicJ said...

getting chippy

NicJ said...

im thinking that double tek is going to come back and bite lamar later.

Fred's Brim said...

Man I wish I cared as much about the whole NBA as I do one stinking Dodger game in April. i'm going to bed angry. gnite all

Kyle Baker said...

Fred's Brim Angry.

Kyle Baker said...

Per some Tweet shit I just read (how is that for sourcing?):

Jon Link optioned; Torre said Belisario will be activated tomorrow.

Also Torre said Bills will stay in the rotation.

Kyle Baker said...

Dbags up 8-7. Still in 4th. God this must be an awful pitching display (I would know after watching us today).

NicJ said...

didnt think link was a permanent option. Glad he did well and hopefully he does well in AAA and im sure we will see him sooner than later.

Bills sucks, but i guess we gotta let him work through it.

Kyle Baker said...

Damn, Mr. C. I can't believe I didn't get a chance to pipe in with a comment on your comment re: the dark gin bottle not revealing your progress. I'm thinking I would have gone with a "The Rake's Progress" reference.

My bad.

NicJ said...

whats that, 4 blown layups?

Kyle Baker said...

COme on guys, finish the god damned fast break.

Kyle Baker said...

At the expense of jinxing it, I like what you're showing me, Bynum.

NicJ said...

all i want from bynum is boards blocks and putbacks.

He's already surpassed what he did in the playoffs last year.

NicJ said...

thunder, 6 blocked shots and only one shooting foul. hmmmm.

NicJ said...

now 7, that was clean though.

NicJ said...

at least westbrooks out for the half

NicJ said...

NO MORE THREES PLEASE

Kyle Baker said...

Fish hits the trailer Gasol - nice play! Come on, Lakers!!!!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

One of these days, Phil needs to smack each guy upside the head and say, "GET TO THE PAINT, MORON."

NicJ said...

i just think they dont listen to him anymore.

NicJ said...

i thought the home team was supposed to get more calls.

I thought david stern favored the lakers?!? what gives?!?!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

So what's the point of paying $12 mill for a coach that nobody listens to?

NicJ said...

i cant remember that last time the lakers won a 2nd Q

Kyle Baker said...

Are we really losing at the half? A 28-8 run, is that what I just heard? Fuck me in the armpit.

Josh S. said...

Damn, and I was going to change my name to Link's Lucky Glasses.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Now would be a great time to flip that switch.

Kyle Baker said...

Now would be a good time for me to start sniffing glue.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Just found out All Star game ticket registration starts tomorrow. I'm putting my name in. Anyone else?

NicJ said...

where do you do that?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

It's online, but you have to wait until tomorrow.

NicJ said...

artest aint stopping durant tonight

Kyle Baker said...

It's just wrong that All Star Game selection balloting is already underway. Two weeks in! Other sports' All Star equivalents never meant much to me, but baseball's does...or, has. I know that balloting has always been a sort of Floridian exercise, but doing it this early is really nothing more than a way for teams to promote their players and sell tickets, not recognize the season's greatness. Again, I'm not naive that these aren't a perfect determinant of talent, but it has to have SOME degree of credibility, especially is it means something, which it does (e.g., playoff home team).

My two cents on this very frustrating day...

NicJ said...

kobe cant buy a shot unless its from near half court

Kyle Baker said...

Kobe should just shoot from my patio chair.

NicJ said...

damn, just missed that and1

Paul said...

@Dusty

Rumors of rampant steroid use was around for 10 years and the MLB did nothing.

One tie in an All-Star game that makes some people pissy and they makes it impact the Fall Classic.

Misplaced aggression?

NicJ said...

seriously, no more threes

Kyle Baker said...

My aggression is well-placed this evening, that's for sure.

This Lakers team looks godawful. Can you not hang onto the got damned ball for half a second? It's like watching my 6-year old pee wee basketball team, if I had a son.

Kyle Baker said...

HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT TO HIT A THREE? YOU'VE BEEN DOING IT YOUR WHOLE FRIGGIN LIFE!

NicJ said...

this has gotta be a record for blocked shots in a playoff game.

NicJ said...

NVM he got it.

Haha, pads get one hit and still win 1 nothing.

Kyle Baker said...

MLB.com headline:

"Yankees in complete control against Oakland"

Score: 6-3 Yankees just starting the 7th.

NicJ said...

somethings wrong when you are wishing you had the padres pitching.

Kyle Baker said...

Frisco scoring precious few runs the last week. That hot start will be in their rear view mirror quicker than Gasol can foolishly show the ball too early when driving the lane.

NicJ said...

farmar is seriously smush parker reincarnated, good play bad play.

NicJ said...

the padres are starting to scare me now.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Um, well, at least we won the quarter!

Paul said...

9 runs should not only be enough to beat the Reds; it should be enough to destroy the Reds.

The Russ Ortiz thing not only didn't pan out when the regular season started but think of all the wasted resources and time used on him during spring training.

Where is that Gin Bottle...

Steve Sax said...

Patrick O Neal has sunk to new lows on interviewing

SOMEONE DO A GODDAMN HEAD FAKE!!!

Kyle Baker said...

I was trying to de-construct that GLEE "Like a Virgin" number just now but Mrs. Dusty said it was way over my head. Agreed.

Back to the Lakeshow, such as it is.

NicJ said...

make the lakers are getting mugged at the basket.

Kyle Baker said...

Clean took it off ya, Kobe. Stop whining.

Kyle Baker said...

Fan just won $235K with a halfcourt shot. No word on whether it was Randy Winn or if Vinny knows about it.

Nostradamus said...

@paul

You rang?

NicJ said...

i think teams have figured out, pack the paint the lakers have nobody that can hit outside shots.

NicJ said...

we need Lamar.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That is one sweet lay-in for Lamar.

Paul said...

@Sax

That is true that $ might have been enough to purchase a starter in the winter.

or at least paid a month of spousal support.

Steve Sax said...

Is bberry service down, or is it my server?

Kyle Baker said...

@Sax

I just successfully sent email from my work BBerry (TMobile).

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Kobe gets the And-1!

NicJ said...

this is an UGLY game.

Kyle Baker said...

Lakers are the foulingest bunch of foulers that ever fouled.

NicJ said...

Kobe Jaw fully jutted

NicJ said...

thunder out of fouls, 5 mins left. We all know the lakers arent going to take advantage of that.

Kyle Baker said...

Gasol coming up strong down the stretch.

NicJ said...

fish a liability on both ends

NicJ said...

well at least fish fouled out.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

You won't have Fish to kick around any more.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Kobe keeps it tied.

NicJ said...

if only the game were two minutes shorter.

Paul said...

If I was Oklahoma City right now, I would do my best to get out of Oklahoma City.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Paul - how ironic that they did everything to get INTO OKC.

Nostradamus said...

@david

Oh, I definitely care. If we suck, I want them to suck even more.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

"Hey, have we tried 3-pointers yet?"
"Yeah"
"Have they worked?"
"No"
"Well, I'm gonna check, just to be safe"

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results

NicJ said...

oh come on you gotta count that.

NicJ said...

wow, we could lose this.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

How do they not count that?

Paul said...

I am trying to recall that quote Dusty...I need to watch that movie again.

NicJ said...

i have no idea, ive seen lebron get continuation from the top of the key on a layup

Paul said...

I think Josh would say "This year's Padres are last year's Padres."

Paul said...

man I thought that was going in.

NicJ said...

ehh, shot wasnt even completely on line.

Paul said...

Gasol you spanish SOB

NicJ said...

shouldnt of been that close.

Steve Sax said...

wow that was close. Good job Lake Show

Paul said...

That wasn't pretty. But I will take it.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

A win is a win is a win. 2-0, baby!

Nostradamus said...

Close finish. We can definitely snag at least 1 in OKC.

NicJ said...

17 blocked shots and not one of those caught arm or body. thats a little hard to believe.

A lot of them were clean though.

Kyle Baker said...

Kobe should've had continuation on that shot - no way it's waved off.

Paul said...

Oh yeah!!!

Thanks Dusty.

Kyle Baker said...

To demonstrate what a gutless fool I am, as if there werent' already a vast and mounting body of evidence, I'm off to re-watch the Dodgers game since the rest of the household haven't seen it yet. I know the result; they don't. Should be an interesting rest of the evening.

Go Lakers! And go Kings!

Paul said...

Is there anything more disturbing than hearing John Tesh's voice talking about amway?

NicJ said...

maybe chad will do better on the replay.

berkowit28 said...

Nearly 130 comments on a basketball game. I don't care about basketball. Billingsley screwed up, and something's wrong there.

Josh S. said...

@Paul: "I think Josh would say 'This year's Padres are last year's Padres.'"

Actually, I'm a little worried that this year's Padres are last year's Dodgers.

Steve Sax said...

That's funny, because I'm worried that this year's Dodgers are last year's Padres. Without Eckstein.

Nostradamus said...

@Paul

Honestly, it's disturbing to hear anyone's voice talking about Amway. I've had multiple family members who drank that particular Kool-aid at one point or another, so just hearing it discussed makes me want to escape to my happy place.

Kyle Baker said...

I can see how the Customers, so named, might be drawn into Amway.

Paul said...

Mr. C

I think if you say that "A...y" three times something evil will appear.

Paul said...

I think this years Dodgers may actually be this years Dodgers. So get ready for months of high scoring and bad pitching gently sauted with sloppy defense.

Nostradamus said...

@Dusty

Indeed, it the secret shame of our clan.
