Game 13 Thread: April 20 @ Reds, 4p

Chad Billingsley (1-0, 5.73) vs. Homer Bailey (0-1, 6.97).

COMMENTS: We don't much like this Homer Bailey fellow. First, in July of last year, he ceded the game to the Dodgers yet plunked Manny Ramirez in the hand with a fastball, which many believe led to Manny's diminished output in the second half of the year. Bailey also ended up on the better end of a Bills-Bails head-to-head matchup in late August out at the Great American Ballpark. So is tonight the night (afternoon?) when we can beat ol' Bailey? (Add another year in purgatory for that one, I know.)

The good news: The second-place Dodgers have now won two series in a row and sent the division-leading Giants away with their tails between their legs. The bad news: the Dodgers haven't won a road series all year, while the Reds have a penchant for the dramatics (all five of the Reds' wins have come in their final at bat). In those rare occasions when they win, that is; the Reds are currently riding a five-game losing streak (tied with the Snakes and Red Sox for the longest active losing streak in MLB). At least the Reds have Hayley Watson, the Slash of Cincinnati, singing the national anthem today. Get fired up, Reds fans.

I use to hate Chris Sabo as a kid.

Fred's Brim said...

i hate him as an adult
Joe Oliver can go to hell, too

And the Dodgers fell into third after Eckstein's final career home run last night

Steve Sax said...

Mini Sirloin Burgers!

Josh S. said...

Weaver just has to make an appearance today. Right? Right?

MR.F said...

That damned commercial.

Nostradamus said...

How much more productive time do I have to burn before first pitch?

NicJ said...

Homers middle name is Dewitt. Two Dewitts in the park!

Nostradamus said...

At least the Reds' very own old MSB Ryan Freel isn't around abuse us on the basepaths any more.

Steve Sax said...

Two Blakes in the park, too

Steve Sax said...

Only 90 minutes left to first pitch

Nostradamus said...

If Casey Blake scored on a Blake DeWitt homer hit off Homer DeWitt Bailey, would the the game have to be called on account of Armageddon?

Steve Sax said...

@Mr C: Only if this guy caught the ball in the stands.

NicJ said...

And if Bill Homer Plaschke wrote an at game recap of it.

Nostradamus said...

...in which he quoted William Blake.

Paul said...

What if Blake Griffin was in the stands? Would they pan back and forth between the game and him since the Clippers are done?

MR.F said...

Beast Mode update, as linked from Dodger Thoughts:

http://tinyurl.com/yyauq6l

"Juan Pierre leads off for the 2010 White Sox, clearly too valuable to ever be considered anyone's second choice. The South Siders gave up two solid pitching prospects in John Ely and Jon Link to obtain a player from the Dodgers in December whom they had coveted for years."

Josh S. said...

Casey Blake is actually William Casey Blake.

Jamey Carroll's middle name is Blake.

I can't blake any more of this.

Josh S. said...

Or...you can't blake this stuff up.

Paul said...

@FB

what about the nasty boys? Three tools in the pen. God the only thing worse would Brian Wilson Heath Bell and Satan in the Giants bullpen today.

Paul said...

Josh

Who is chocolate Blake? Oh Just Dewitt yourself Homer.

Steve Sax said...

I can't believe no one has given me grief on the Beetle Bailey stretch pun.

Frankly, I'm Mort-ified.

Steve Sax said...

Dusty Baker already nailed this in a prior comment thread, but here's the lineup:

Furcal, SS
Kemp, CF
Ethier, RF
Manny, LF
Loney, 1B
Blake, 3B
DeWitt, 2B
Martin, C
Billingsley, P

When Blake comes before DeWitt I always get freaked out a bit while reading the lineup.

Paul said...

Sax

I would but my family is like a circus right now.

Nostradamus said...

@Sax

I didn't let it slide completely.

Typically, I'm the only one amused, because my references are further out in left field than the original stretch.

MR.F said...

AHHH. My co-workers are wondering who the hell Justin Bieber is. AHHHHHHHH.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Sargent Snorkel and his faithful dog Otto.

Ah...the memories of reading the daily comics as a kid. I miss those days.

BTW, GO KINGS!

Sorry for pimping my "other" team.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

@Mr. F

Justin Bieber is the anti-christ.

Steve Sax said...

FWIW, Orel (strangely silent today) is a big For Better or Worse fan.

MR.F said...

Seriously. It's a sign of the apocalypse. 2012. Whatever.
1) Earthquakes
2) Volcanoes
3) Justin Bieber

Kyle Baker said...

Finally this fetid meeting ended so I can get back to the real work at hand.

1) Let's beat these fucking commie bastards!

2) I so would have said what FB said @2:01 re: hating Sabo as an adult.

3) @Josh - Weaver will only make an appearance if the bases are ardiendo or we are otherwise in a jam.

4) Did the MSB commercial just re-air? Or were the comments just misty-eyed nostalgia?

5) Casey's name is really William Casey Blake? *shivers* I like him a little less for reminding me of Bill Casey, the swine.

6) @Sax- Actually I like the Beetle Bailey bit. Fond memories or my grandfather reading them to me when I was but a wee lad, during a time when life was so simple that I actually found that drivel amusing.

I think I'm caught up now.

Kyle Baker said...

Orel has not been very oral lately, indeed.

He probably has his nose buried in the latest Kathy comic.

Josh S. said...

"Orel (strangely silent today) is a big For Better or Worse fan."

And judging from the number of comments on that post, he's the only one.

Kyle Baker said...

Holy spit I just re-read the GT post.

"Hayley Watson, the Slash of Cincinnati"

What a great line, Sax.

Orel said...

current guilty pleasure comic strip: The Meaning of Lila

Orel said...

Making that puzzle took all the comment out of me.

Steve Sax said...

Hello, Orel!

Steve Sax said...

@DB 3:49p (point #4): David Eckstein = MSB. Credit to Booger, last year.

Paul said...

I thought the blog was going to change to the Son of Steve Garvey. (reference to a few thousand who have made that joke)

Steve Sax said...

Wait, just found the exact Eckstein / MSB comment here.

I remember losing it when I first read that.

Steve Sax said...

Paul: i don't get it

Steve Sax said...

it's 4.10p! where the hell is the first pitch???

Josh S. said...

Furcal single!

Josh S. said...

You're on your iPhone, aren't you, Sax?

koufax said...

woohoo baseball

Steve Sax said...

Josh: Yes. F' the iPhone and the Gameday delays.

Furkey leadoff single. Let's go, Dodgers!

Steve Sax said...

take this downtown, Kempy

Unknown said...

Furcal seems to be doing much better this year.

Steve Sax said...

1-6 in our lineup, all batting above .300

Martin at .290 in the 8-hole

Steve Sax said...

Bills has a better batting average than Joyce DeWitt

Unknown said...

fiddlesticks.

Josh S. said...

Ugh. Kemp. I'll pretend it was a sacrifice.

Steve Sax said...

shoot, Kemp, that pitch was like neck-high

Steve Sax said...

Josh S: You're right, with Raffy stealing, it's as good as a sac

Steve Sax said...

let's try and get on the board quickly here, okay guys?

Steve Sax said...

Josh S: Who is that avatar, btw?

Steve Sax said...

ethier should take this pitch as well with a 3-1 count

Steve Sax said...

what did I tell you, Ethier BB

koufax said...

lets go manny

Steve Sax said...

Okay Homer, I know you're wild but keep these pitches the hell away from Manny's hands

Unknown said...

snap.

Josh S. said...

It's Betty White, at the opening of Pink's on Citiwalk yesterday. The pic cracked me up.

Steve Sax said...

Oh, I don't think this is going to end well.

Steve Sax said...

I thought it was Betty White. I like Betty White.

But that is not a flattering picture.

Pink's will do that to you.

Josh S. said...

This pitcher isn't a terminator. They should just swing the bat, man.

Josh S. said...

Reasons Why Josh is Lame #327: I've never had Pink's.

Unknown said...

Homer's racking up his pitch count quickly.

Josh S. said...

SHAVED MODE!

Fred's Brim said...

now that's a start!

Unknown said...

heck yeah.

koufax said...

if you are going to go out of the zone on a 3-2 you better hit it like that, yeah blake

MR.F said...

YES!

Steve Sax said...

All right, CASEY!

In play, run(s)

Kyle Baker said...

I've had Pink's once. It was hiiiiiiiighly over-rated. That said, I'm glad it's a great local cultural touchstone.

Nostradamus said...

I'm calling it.

End of the world right here.

Steve Sax said...

Come on, Blake #2, keep the rally going

3-0 Dodgers, Casey Blake on second with two out

koufax said...

reds announcers just pointed out that homer bailey's middle name is Dewitt...

Josh S. said...

Joyce spoils the party.

Steve Sax said...

Wow, you guys are right: that Casey Blake double wasn't even close to the strike zone, acc. to Gameday. How bad did it look on TV?

Kyle Baker said...

Bill Casey! I forgive you for Iran-Contra!

koufax said...

the ball was neck level in the middle of the plate

Steve Sax said...

Yay, DeWitt. End of inning.

Dodgers 3, Reds 0 after a half-inning. Homer's got 31 pitches. Let's get 27 runs, since Chad may need all of them.

Fred's Brim said...

Paul - I couldn't stand them either, especially Dibble. Charlton scared me and I was pretty "meh" about Myers. The 1990 season was such a battle, chasing those bastards

Steve Sax said...

I am not a big fan of Pink's, except at 2am. I don't really get the length of those lines sometimes.

I was in line once and saw the rising steam collecting on the wire bars protecting one from the whirring blades of an oscillating fan. And this steam was collecting, and then dripping globs of water + oil + rust + who the hell knows, all down into the chili and hot dogs and everything. That experience pretty much soured me on the whole Pink's thing.

I'm with you, Dusty. I'm cool with the cultural reference, but I'm not going to make a point to eat there myself too often.

On the flipside, I just had a Tommy's chiliburger last week, at 1am on a Saturday night. It was glorious.

Josh S. said...

Good to know about Pink's. Thanks, gents.

Fred's Brim said...

Sax, it was a pretty good meatball, on the corner or an inch wide and probably 2-3 inches high, plus flat and not very fast

Steve Sax said...

Reds don't have anyone in their lineup batting over .300...except the pitcher, Homer Bailey

Steve Sax said...

90 comments through one inning. not bad.

3-0 Dodgers through 1

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Hands Down you guys have to head to the Valley and try a Fab's Hot Dog. Many styles to choose.

Simply unFNbelievable.

Run don't walk.

You'll never be the same again.

Kyle Baker said...

Tommy's - now you're talking! Do they even open before 11 PM?

Josh S. said...

Yep, always swing at the first pitch when the pitcher can't find the strike zone.

Fred's Brim said...

A dog place I like is Rutt's Hut in Clifton, NJ. They deep fry the dogs until they rip (they are called rippers). Pretty tasty doggies.

Fred's Brim said...

gift strike on 3-0

Unknown said...

good effort, Chad.

Josh S. said...

Well, that wasn't so good.

koufax said...

Fred - rutts hut is a good experience, cant go there all the time tho

Josh S. said...

Goddammit, now I want a hot dog.

Thanks a pantload, Betty White.

MR.F said...

Same here.

I could realllly go for a hot dog right now...

(looks around for Homer Simpson-stalking hot dog vendor)

Josh S. said...

Chad not waiting until the 5th to melt down?

Fred's Brim said...

flat fastball

Josh S. said...

What the shit, thunder thighs?!

MR.F said...

Keep it together!!!

Unknown said...

Sigh. The meltdown inning just keeps coming earlier. What do you know, maybe next game the guy will pull a Marquis.

Casey Lombardo said...

Not from those parts or anything, but if you ever find yourself in Sherman Oaks, The Infield has an insane hot dog menu! Lots of great stuff, and you can sit in some old Dodger Stadium seats (plus other old ballpark seats) while you eat.

koufax said...

bye bye lead

Kyle Baker said...

Next outing I expect Bills to have his meltdown during warmup, then after that on the team plane.

Fred's Brim said...

all gone!

Casey Lombardo said...

In the time it took me to write that, Bills coughed up two runs, dammit.

Josh S. said...

*stares dumbfounded*

Nostradamus said...

Jesus H! Grab a bucket!

Casey Lombardo said...

Make that three.

Kyle Baker said...

JFC, Bills, this is weak. At some point you're going to have to come correct - we're almost out of excuses.

Fred's Brim said...

Chad's fastball isn't very fast, is it?

Unknown said...

fricking frick. I just realized that if we have a day where our pitcher just looses it and can't go more than 3 innings, we're frickin screwed.

MR.F said...

=(

Kyle Baker said...

Bring me a bucket.

karen said...

Bills not very encouraging

Josh S. said...

He's Marquis-ing!

Josh S. said...

HOOK.

NOW.

koufax said...

miserable

Fred's Brim said...

Listening to Collins and Lyons, I still feel like I am watching the opponent's broadcast

NicJ said...

bills just cannot hold a lead. maybe next time we shouldnt score until he is out of the game.

Fred's Brim said...

meatball after meatball

slow, flat fastballs

Unknown said...

shit, what can Torre do? We don't have 8 innings of bullpen pitchers.

Josh S. said...

"Let's take a break from this disaster to tell you that if you want to see the Yankees, you have to sell your first born."

*punches Rick Monday*

Steve Sax said...

five batters, none out--WHAT THE FUCK, BILLINGSLEY???

koufax said...

oh my god

NicJ said...

just walk back home bills. and by home i mean defiance.

Steve Sax said...

Homer gets a RBI, Chad gives up the lead

karen said...

Bills is coming undone

Steve Sax said...

hayley watson has just vomited with excitement

NicJ said...

Haeger was just overheard saying "man, this guy sucks."

Fred's Brim said...

is he tipping his pitches or something? there has to be a reason for this besides Bills being terrible

Unknown said...

The dreadful "In play, run(s)" of GameDay is going to infest my nightmares.

Steve Sax said...

This would be a nice time to offer that Lincecum-for-Billingsley trade, Colletti.

NicJ said...

I wish his leg was still broken.

Fred's Brim said...

time to shave the junior goatee, Bills

Casey Lombardo said...

Bills with the Dodgers' 3,000th error of the season.

karen said...

19 pitches and no outs

20 pitches...

Unknown said...

Throwing error by Chad Billingsley? What the hell?

Steve Sax said...

will Cincy get a fifth run before the first out of the second inning?

Steve Sax said...

holy cow, chadley got an out

Unknown said...

Omg he got a strikeout! Man, this guy is nails!

Kyle Baker said...

Conflicting edits...must mean Bills gave up another run.

Yep!

Wesley Vento said...

damn it damn it son of a bitch

koufax said...

keep it at 5-3 we can come back, come on chad

Unknown said...

STOP TORMENTING ME, CURSED "In play, run(s)"

Steve Sax said...

Drew Stubbs, Chad OWNS YOUR ASS

As for the rest of you, please don't tee off on Chad too hard

Steve Sax said...

five runs for cincy in this nightmare inning

Josh S. said...

Time to drive home.

You know, like everyone wearing a Reds uniform is doing right now.

koufax said...

billingsley planning on using up all of his pitches in this inning

Kyle Baker said...

We are McCovey Chronicles in disguise.

koufax said...

unreal

Fred's Brim said...

of course that falls in

NicJ said...

this has got to be deflating for the offense.

Unknown said...

It just never ends...

Kyle Baker said...

Bills will be good when we trade him to a team we play 18 times per season - he will own us.

koufax said...

its ok, we got ramon ortiz backing him up

Wesley Vento said...

billingsley doing his best russ ortiz impression

Fred's Brim said...

Joe giving up already, the remaining Ortiz is up in the pen

MR.F said...

I'm sad. I'm afraid everybody's gonna be hating on Chad, so I may not refresh for awhile...

Steve Sax said...

If this doesn't shatter Billingsley's confidence once and for all, I don't know what does.

We need to get this kid a shrink. It's all in his head.

NicJ said...

down by three, we were just leading by that much!

Kyle Baker said...

I haven't decided on whether Bills sucks or blows. Either way, these have been 49 minutes that have ruined a perfectly good day.

Steve Sax said...

THE NATIONAL (league) NIGHTMARE IS OVER

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Another nail in the Billingsley coffin.

NicJ said...

sorry Collins, i dont really count 6 runs in an inning as "getting out of it" unless he means the game.

Kyle Baker said...

Can we trade Bills for Eckstein? Or Pierre?

Matt said...

Not that it excuses anything, but according to GameCast, Bills is getting a raw deal on high strikes...like not even close

Steve Sax said...

In other news, the 10-batter half-inning allowed us to keep pace, 181 comments through two innings

Reds 6. Dodgers 3. SoSG sad.

Wesley Vento said...

fuck shit balls ass bitch

Casey Lombardo said...

At least with the error he figured out a neat way to damage control his ERA. Only four of those runs were earned!

Steve Sax said...

Kemp better hit a three-run leadoff home run here

NicJ said...

im not even really mad at chad anymore. Im just starting to feel bad for him.

Unknown said...

Billingsley needs to throw a damn off speed pitch for a strike. Unless you are a complete hack (Drew Stubbs), you just wait for dead red...high school kids could hit Bills right now. And I reiterate, Fire Honeycutt.

Steve Sax said...

Homer Bailey's GameDay avatar seems to be smiling a little bit too broadly after that inning.

MR.F said...

I'm not giving up on Chad.

Steve Sax said...

In play, no out

That's a promising start to the third.

koufax said...

Casey - thats probably what he was thinking when he threw the ball into the stands

Wesley Vento said...

now's when Manny's other calf starts to hurt

Steve Sax said...

I think Chad's got the stuff, he just doesn't have the confidence. We should be trying hypnosis or breathing exercises or something.

NicJ said...

WTF was that kemp!!!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Slide, moron!

koufax said...

kemp forgot to slide

Wesley Vento said...

sweet mary mother of god. i need to stop watching this

Fred's Brim said...

what the hell was that?

time to stop run Matt so much, before he ruins more innings or gets hurt

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Neeebs (The Original) said...

How about those KINGS?

*tempted to turn the game off*

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Is it too soon to turn this into a Laker thread?

Steve Sax said...

well that's depressing.

koufax said...

reds announcers - the left field section at dodger stadium dubbd 'mannyworld' in honor of ramirez

NicJ said...

christ, Homer must have it out for Manny.

Casey Lombardo said...

Clearly, opposing catchers do not believe he is a 40/40 threat.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

They want retribution for the bobbleslam.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

@FB (from awhile ago):

The hot dog place in the Valley is a take off of the east coast place you mentioned. In fact, their signature dog is called the RIPPER. Same style, deep fried. I prefer the pastrami dog or the philly cheesesteak dog

This is better than talking Dodger baseball right now.

Steve Sax said...

FJL HR here, perhaps?

Fred's Brim said...

Steve Sax said...

Way to take a pitch, James.

Oh, you didn't.
