Game 53 Thread: May 29 @ Mets, 4p

Brad Penny (5-5, 5.32) vs. Claudio Vargas (1-2, 3.93).

COMMENTS: The Dodgers have a $119 million payroll; the Mets have a $138 million payroll. The Dodgers have a 26-26 record and have lost six of their last ten; the Mets have a 25-26 record and have lost seven of their last ten. The Dodgers have $50 million on the disabled list; the Mets have a Dead Manager Walking. The Dodgers have a mascot in the overpaid, injured veteran; the Mets have a mascot in, well, Mr. Met. I'm hoping for a split in this four-game series.

Nice fall from grace for Maza--from second to eighth in the blink of an eye.

Orel said...

At least he's still in the lineup. Hu must be thinking, "What's a guy batting .170 gotta do around here to play?"

Dusto_Magnifico said...

And Kent batting cleanup AGAIN? Jeeze Torre, get it together man!

Erin said...

Hu should know better. Get it down to .098, and then maybe he can start a few games for Loney. Or pinch-hit in key situations late in the game. Sweeney's got this all figured out.

Pierre on third with one out! Want to bet he's stranded by Martin and Kent?

Erin said...

Edited:

Man, the Mets broadcast is showing stats to illustrate just how inept this team is offensively. Decent OBP, but last in the league in homers and doubles, and near the bottom in every other important offensive category.

It's hard to look at, actually.

Also hard to look at? A double play with a flyout and Pierre thrown out at home. This team is completely incapable of scoring runs.

Steve Sax said...

Heck, we don't even need Kent to strand Pierre! We just need a lazy , shallow fly ball from Martin so that Pierre is gunned out at home!

Boy, that was nice of Martin to absolve Kent of first-inning guilt.

Steve Sax said...

Erin, how are you catching today's broadcast from chi-town?

Erin said...

MLB.tv is my friend today. And even on a dicey Internet connection, I could tell Pierre's slide was weak on that play at the plate.

Steve Sax said...

Penny shows some mettle and escapes a jam. 0-0 after uno.

Erin, there is a vicious rumor going around that a writer for Beantown West may have stiffed a writer from Sons of Steve Garvey for cab fare. I haven't yet seen AC's expense reports; is the rumor true?

Erin said...

Sax, alas, it is true. I only had $4 left to my name when the group (including two of AC's friends) decided to share a cab to avoid the long line at the El.

I have promised AC a beer when/if we see each other at a game in Dodger Stadium later this season. Also, I gave him a hug. Does any of that make up for it?

Steve Sax said...

Actually, I'm even more shocked AC has any friends.

Steve Sax said...

Just kidding, AC!

Steve Sax said...

Erin, I'm guessing the hug will warm AC on his long roadtrip home after seeing two straight Dodger losses.

Which is a good thing, especially when he finds out we're not paying for his roadtrip expenses.

Steve Sax said...

When is Kemp going to bust out home run #4?

Steve Sax said...

whoops, not at that at-bat.

Erin said...

Man, batters seem to foul off a lot of Penny's pitches this season, huh?

Steve Sax said...

Crap, a ten-pitch at bat from Tatis. Well, at least Penny got the out.

Steve Sax said...

Okay, I'm heading out for an hour. I'll be back.

Erin said...

I don't know if they showed it on the Dodgers' broadcast, but on SNY, where I'm getting my feed, a Dodgers' fan just proposed to a Mets' fan. I don't know about the chances of that relationship.

karina said...

I saw that proposal. Erin, remember the old saying: "love conquers all". Though if i ever find out that a guy i'm interested in is a giants fan, i thik i'd cut him off right away.

karina said...

David Wright 2-run HR. Beltran and Delgado singled.

Steve Sax said...

Karina, I'm in love with you.

karina said...

I love you, too.

Erin said...

Man. What is up with Brad Penny this year?

karina said...

Jeff Kent HR, a solo HR...baby steps...

King James single, no outs, let's go blue!

karina said...

Blake DeWitt HR!

Let's go blueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Erin said...

Well, looky here. Two home runs in one inning? When was the last time the Dodgers did that?

Erin said...

I'd feel better about Kuo holding this lead if it hadn't been about a hundred years since he last pitched.

Kuo just got called for going to his mouth on the mound. Apparently Zambrano did that last night (though I didn't see it) but didn't get called for it.

I do have to say that there's nothing grosser than watching a guy lick his hand. You have to wipe your hand whenever you go to your mouth anyway, so I don't see any benefit to pitching. So, really, you're just licking your hand after touching a ball that's been rubbed up with mud and gone through god knows how many hands. It makes me a little sick.

Eric Karros said...

Hello folks. Just turned on the game on TV and it's not looking good.

Eric Karros said...

No argument here. That is indeed gross.

Eric Karros said...

Trivia question: "Rebel Hideouts" is an anagram for what?

Eric Karros said...

Trivia answer: "Ethier doubles"

Eric Karros said...

Let's go Kent

Eric Karros said...

Ok Loney. 2 on, 2 out. Great time to turn things around for yourself and the team.

karina said...

Well done, King James!

Eric Karros said...

Woo hoo! RBI single for James. Tying run on base.

Eric Karros said...

I see I missed some sort of love-in earlier in the game thread.

Eric Karros said...

Epale Karina

Erin said...

Someone will have to remind me what team we are currently watching. Hits with RISP, and a genuine shot at a comeback from a 6-0 hole? This is unheard of.

Eric Karros said...

It could be a big tease, Erin.

Erin said...

It was, EK, at least for now. Kemp strikes out to end the inning. Ugh.

Erin said...

In case anyone is interested, I just put a post on my site about the Cubs series. It's mostly pictures, because writing about the series is too depressing.

Eric Karros said...

Dodgers go down 1-2-3

karina said...

Erin, how are the Spurs doing?

Erin said...

Different night, same story: another Dodger reliever meltdown.

Karina, Spurs were up 28-15 after the first quarter, and now lead 33-16 with about nine minutes left in the second quarter. It's a nice start, but they have to keep it up. And they have a long way to go even if they win this game.

karina said...

It seems LA sports teams are determined to break your heart.

Steve Sax said...

I'm bringing Saxyback. Yeah!

Someone tell me what the score is, as I'm stuck listening to Rick Monday and I think we're losing.

karina said...

Losing 8-4, Brad penny allowed 6 runs and Beimel had a meltdown.

karina said...

four runs would have been enough to win each game against the Cubs.

karina said...

why can't they score 4 runs when the starters have quality starts?

Steve Sax said...

Good point karina; my friend Bit agreed.

Steve Sax said...

Loney, start swinging on some damn called third strikes!

Erin said...

Guess we have to pray (again) that the Giants can beat the D-Backs.

night...
