Game 45 Thread: May 20 vs. Reds, 7p

Chad Billingsley (3-5, 4.34) vs. Matt Belisle (1-3, 7.45).

COMMENTS: You can't pick your spots in the Dodgers' formidable lineup. At least, that's what Reds manager Dusty Baker has got to be thinking after Russell Martin, as the winning run, gets to third with one out in the ninth; Baker proceeds to issue free passes to Free James Loney and Matt 4-for-4 Kemp, only to get burned when Blake DeWitt hits DeWinning base hit to left. Vin Scully gets at least one more night to drive home the point that the Reds have not won at Dodger Stadium since 2005. But tonight, things get even more testy now that Gary Bennett joins Andruw Jones on the DL. Without Bennett (.190) and Jones (.167) in the lineup, will the Dodgers have a fighting chance?

I wonder if we've tried batting Martin leadoff yet?

Steve Sax said...

I don't think Martin has Signature Quickness.

Who said signature "quickness" was the qualifier to be a leadoff man? Why can't OBP be the standard stat to establish who should leadoff and who shouldn't? And when do we consider moving Laroche to second base to cover Kent when leaves next year. I'm not sold on Abreu.

RMSQ? Wasn't that what Roman soldiers wore?

Hey guys, mlb.tv is giving my problems tonight when I say to it, "could I please give you some money so that I may watch baseball on my computer?". Its response so far has been, "absolutely not. We are experiencing some sort of error."

In other words, I may need some play-by-play from you fellas to make it a little easier on me. GameCast and Gameday can only tell me so much.

FLA 3, ARI 2

Orel said...

I'll try to catch you up in the later innings, Erin. Right now I'm on Gameday myself.

Erin said...

Orel, by "later innings," I assume you mean "on the other side."

karina said...

I'm on Gameday but i get to see some updates from Strike Zone Channel, if something interesting happens, i'll tell.

karina said...

does someone wonder who'll be bennett's replacement?

Orel said...

Nice, Erin. If Sax could buy you a beer right now, he would.

Orel said...

Bennett's replacement is Danny Ardoin.

karina said...

Thanks, Orel.

Erin said...

I only hope I can make it through this game. I've spent the last two days walking all over Chicago, and it's been a few years since I've been in a city where walking is so encouraged. My legs are not used to it. I am beat.

karina said...

In Gameday you see there were back to back singles by Kent and King James, but on the tv, Kent is on the third.

Matt Kemp grounded out, they tried to tag Kent at home, but Encarnacion made a bad throw and the catcher couldn't put Kent out.

Erin said...

The "In play, run(s)" delay on Gameday is torture.

karina said...

Bases Loaded. The shortstop couldn't handle a hard line by Dewitt.

Erin said...

Thanks Karina. The Gameday description that finally showed up was a little confusing.

karina said...

See the bright side, Erin. Walking is a great cardiovascular exercise and it's gonna do wonders for your health.

karina said...

Single by Hu. Loney was forced out at home

Bills RBI-single! and bases are still loaded.

Erin said...

Don't get me wrong, I love walking places instead of driving. And I run a lot for exercise, but the constant walking all day is just not normal for me. I'll get used to it, but today and yesterday are catching up to me tonight.

karina said...

I see. Get a hot damp towel and put it on your legs. Then put some a cold damp towel. If you have some sort of analgesic cream, put it, too.

how are your feet?

(it works, i used to be a trained dancer)

Erin said...

My feet are surprisingly okay, actually. I'll be all right after a good night's sleep tonight.

karina said...

Great catch by Griffey Jr. He robbed a single or even a double by Jeff Kent.

karina said...

It was a fly on the shallow right field.

Orel said...

Dancers and runners...you guys must be in great shape. I feel like a blob.

2-0 Dodgers. The 2nd inning looked great on Gameday but it seems we should have scored more than 2 runs. Hope that doesn't come back to bite us in the ass.

Off to battle the 101. See you on the something something!

Wall meet The Bison

Orel said...

Greetings from the other side.

How did Chad get out of that mess without allowing a run?

Damon said...

walk to Jr and a dp ball from phillips

Orel said...

Belisle had retired 13 straight before Loney and Kemp singled. Kemp just about knocked Belisle on his ass with a shot up the middle.

Orel said...

Thanks Damon. Phillips just took it right back.

Orel said...

Vin may forget a name now and then but how sharp was he in seeing that Phillips broke late on that last play? Brilliant.

Damon said...

i was taking a shower how did we score?

Damon said...

Nevermind I just looked at gameday nothing too exciting

Orel said...

Hu singled, Young advanced him, Pierre singled Hu home. Pierre stole second, Ethier singled, Pierre scored on Martin's FC.

Damon said...

So I wonder when LaRoche is going to be called up

Orel said...

Nothing too exciting except the Dodgers scoring...that's always exciting.

Pierre seems to be getting in a groove.

Orel said...

When Jones goes on the DL.

Orel said...

Okay Brox, hold time.

Orel said...

1-2-3 for Brox!

Orel said...

Here we go, Beimel for the win!

Orel said...

Beimel gets two outs but allows a run. Saito in for the save.

Orel said...

And Saito K's Freel for the save! Dodgers win 4-1 and trim Arizona's lead to 4 games.

(Fast game, too—about 2:35.)

Good night, everyone! (Except Erin, who's already in dreamland....)

Orel said...

James Loney is not an electrifying interview.

Steve Sax said...

Gooooo Dodgers!

I got into my car at around 915p and Charley sounded positively bored. Rick and Charley were detailing a bet that Jr had lost to Josh Fogg, in which Ken Griffey Jr remitted payment in 150,000 pennies. 60 16-lb boxes. Yikes.
