Game 37 Thread: May 11 vs. Astros, 1p

Hiroki Kuroda (1-2, 3.95) vs. Shawn Chacon (0-0, 3.60).

COMMENTS: Happy Mom's Day! The Dodgers chose a fine time to end the mother of all winning streaks, losing the first of their past seven series (although two ended in splits). They're also failing to capitalize on Arizona's slump of their own: The Diamondbacks have lost six of their past ten (and also lost by five runs yesterday). The Dodgers hope to harness the power of their pink bats today and salvage game three. In their favor: Chacon is 4-7 with a 5.85 ERA lifetime against the Dodgers.

Offensively, the suddenly silent bats (the Dodgers have been outscored 24-2 in their past three games) and Rafael Furcal's absence are not coincidental. We thought he would return yesterday; now, Furcal's presence in today's game is in doubt. With Monday off, don't be surprised if Joe Torre rests Furcal again to give him a fresh start in Milwaukee on Tuesday. If that's the case, then let's hope Torre takes the same approach with Andruw Jones, who was—surprise!—0-for-3 yesterday (and it's all in his head, if that's any comfort). Because of Kuroda's recent ineffectiveness, Andre Ethier needs to start today if the Dodgers are to have a chance of winning. Do the right thing, Joe.

The lineup:

Pierre, LF
Ethier, RF
Kemp, CF
Loney, 1B
Martin, C
DeWitt, 3B
Young, 2B
Hu, SS
Kuroda, P

Delwyn's first start of the year! Also, no Furcal...but no Jones either. I hope this group kills.

Loney bomb! 2-0 Dodgers, and it would have been more if Kemp didn't get CS.

Hi everyone!

Ethier single, King James home run!

are you taking notes Mr. Torre?

Orel said...

Epale, Karina! Are you watching on TV? Everybody's wearing pink wristbands.

Ethier hard single up the middle!

Orel said...

Wow, Lakers tied it up at the half.

Orel said...

Kuroda hit Tejada. That'll age you.

Orel said...

Kuroda cruises through four. Still 2-0 Dodgers.

Orel said...

Kuroda cruises through five. Meanwhile, D'backs 4, Cubs 2.

Orel said...

Pierre with a two-out single off Chacon. Ethier (2-for-2) is up. This would be a nice time to knock Chacon up, I can't believe he's made it through 4 2/3.

Lakers down by ten (again) in the 4th.

nope, gameday for me today. I could get to see 3 Dodgers games this week.

(and there is a party going on in my house)

Kuroda is pitching "the one that you shall not be named"

Orel said...

I hadn't even noticed!

Orel said...

Kuroda K's Tejada after going down 3-0! And the Prime Ticket graphics operator just put the "hits" column in yellow!

Party at Karina's house!

karina said...

only 79 pitches by Kuroda

I adore when men wear pink...David Wright (as an example)was wearing pink wristbands, he looked adorable.

The Lakers' defense is like Swiss cheese and Kobe's hurting.

karina said...

you're invited, anytime!

It was supposed we were having a quiet lunch with my parents, my brother and I.

Right now, there are 30 people in this house and growing... my dad's idea, how do you think i've learned about cocktails?

be right back, hoping Kuroda is pitching "the one that you shall not be named"

Lakers down 2 with 7.8 seconds left....

Orel said...

Aw, no more no-no on Pence's single!

Orel said...

Lakers tie it up with 4.6 seconds left!

Orel said...

...and Kuroda walks the next batter. 1st & 2nd for the Astros, two out.

Orel said...

Kuroda gets the leash and the standing O. Beimel coming in.

Orel said...

Overtime in Utah!

Orel said...

Cubs beat the D'backs!

Orel said...

Astros double steal—Torre gets a taste of his own medicine.

Orel said...

Beimel walks one in....

Orel said...

Aaugh, Lakers giving it away in OT....

Orel said...

Kemp makes it interesting in CF but Beimel escapes the jam.

Erin said...

Oh man. Matt Kemp just made hearts stop all over Los Angeles with that fly ball. But he got the out, thank god.

Orel said...

And a Kobe airball means the Lakers will lose.

Orel said...

Some much-needed insurance for the bullpen. 3-1 Dodgers.

Orel said...

Wow, the Rays swept the Angels.

Orel said...

Okay, time to walk the dog. Switching to radio mode.

Erin said...

Wow. What is wrong with Broxton?

Erin said...

Broxton gives up five runs in the eighth to give the Astros a 6-3 lead. The infield was playing in with one out and runners at second and third, and a ball that could have been an easy groundout was up the middle to score two runs. Only one out, and a runner at first.

This team is hard to watch sometimes. Thank goodness tomorrow is an off day. I don't know if I can take another game from the Dodgers.

Orel said...

Well that was a disaster. I'll never walk the dog again.

Erin said...

It is your fault, Orel, obviously.

Bourn just made a hell of a catch to stop this from being a real rally in the ninth. Bourn sacrificed his life to rob Jones of an extra-base hit. Too bad. Jones actually made a good swing.

Orel said...

Mea culpa!

Jones' home-run power has become warning-track power.

Steve Sax said...

Orel, I blame your dog.

It's my fault. First, i point out that Kuroda was pitching a no-hitter (jinxing him), then i leave to be a hostess for an impromptu party. It's totally my fault. I feel so bad.
