Game 83 Thread: July 7 @ Mets, 4p

Cute or terrifying? I can't decide.

Clayton Kershaw (5-5, 3.49) vs. Mike Pelfrey (6-3, 4.26).

COMMENTS:

TEN THINGS WE KNOW ABOUT CITI FIELD

1. The worst ceremonial first pitch there has already been thrown.

2. It's the sixth pitcher-friendliest park in the majors.

3. A woman got her arm stuck in a stadium toilet.

4. Conditions there can get a little hellish.

5. Don't be surprised if we see some video replay there.

6. Streaking at the stadium? Already done.

7. It's where the wild things roam.

8. The Mets have already hosted a perfect game pitcher there.

9. Tagging will not be tolerated there.

10. Chipper Jones won't be changing his son's name to "Citi" anytime soon.

UPDATE: Belisario to have MRI (Dodger Thoughts)

Baby Met is cute, the rest are pretty terrifying.

Wesley Vento said...

Baby Mets looks sad and dissapointed. He must be around 2 years old or so.

NicJ said...

Colletti just said on the radio that belli is probably going on the dl soon.

Ouch.

Steve Sax said...

That's okay, our bullpen has been nails lately.

And that's why I'm not worried.

((Belly's) arm falls off)

Kyle Baker said...

Please make this game start already. What am I supposed to do, work? Plus there were no earlier games to watch to whet my whistle. Mongo must have game now.

Steve Sax said...

How bizarre does it feel to be the first game of the day?

Kyle Baker said...

Sax, I know. No get-away games, no make-up games, no day Wrigley games, no oddball New England holiday games -- nothing.

I hear mistress lager calling for the moment until whatever semblance of a pre-game we are blessed with.

Over/under on when we first see Claudio Vargas: 8 games

PenosCabell said...

Ethier's batting 7th?

Josh S. said...

I'm so used to people putting "Manny" instead of "Ramirez" when they type up lineups, that I thought for a second that he wasn't playing again.

PenosCabell said...

ESPN was showing some kid at CitiField holding a sign with a syringe on it.

Wrong thread, I know, but Halladay for Kershaw got me thinking, what are the worst fan-generated trade ideas you've ever heard?

I once read a Giants fan before the 2003 season propose Livan Hernandez for Preston Wilson AND Josh Beckett. Can anyone top that?

Anonymous said...

"ESPN was showing some kid at CitiField holding a sign with a syringe on it."

Maybe it was meant to symbolize all the cortisone the Mets are filled with.

Wesley Vento said...

...or maybe all the heroine Omar Minaya was slamming when he didn't sign a hitter in the offseason thinking that Carlos Delgado would take them to the promised land.

Kyle Baker said...

Maybe the fan was just paying tribute to former Mets great Lenny Dykstra?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Maybe he's a Sheffield fan.

Kyle Baker said...

Are you sure it wasn't a coke spoon, and meant to be a reference to former Mets great Keith Hernandez?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

O-Dog gets back into things. Here comes Manny.

Erin said...

4:13 isn't too early for a beer, right?

Kyle Baker said...

Is that the worst that Mets fans could muster?

Kyle Baker said...

Erin-
No. Nor was 3:06.

Josh S. said...

You didn't have a beer, during the pre-game, Erin?

Erin said...

Alas, no beer during the pre-game. I was walking the dog.

I'm actually going to do a workout first, and then I'll reward myself with a beer (or four). So it'll probably be closer to 4:45.

Erin said...

Wow. That strike three call was a ball earlier in the count. That was really obviously wrong.

Kyle Baker said...

Manny was right! But, he needs to understand that he ain't getting many calls these days.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The Mets fans ate that K up with the aforementioned spoon.

Josh S. said...

Oh great, we have a screwy ground crew, according to Monday.

Josh S. said...

2 on, 2 out for the road-homer-hitting baby giraffe.

Erin said...

What is more likely: five people told Steve Lyons incorrect directions to the press box, or Steve Lyons was too stupid to understand any of those five people?

Kyle Baker said...

Dodger Thoughts reporting that Torre said DreamWeaver will get the Sat. start.

Kyle Baker said...

Cora: You cannot scora!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That pitch would have been a ball.

Steve Sax said...

Alex Cora fields the Loney ground ball to end the top of the first, stranding two runners.

Damn you, AC!

NicJ said...

Well that bad call already cost us a run.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

If that inning did anything, it took a toll on Pelfrey's count.

Steve Sax said...

Steiner sounds pretty sleepy. What did he do last night?

Steve Sax said...

at least we had Pelfrey pitch 23 pitches

Steve Sax said...

Mr LA SF, you beat me to it re: Pelfrey's Pitch Count

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Castillo was frozen.

Steve Sax said...

kershaw starts castillo 2-0, then throws three strikes for the K

Kyle Baker said...

Hope this isn't an 18-pitch at bat.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Nice grab by Raffy.

Josh S. said...

Giggle fits in the first inning!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Well, now Kershaw's throwing a lot of pitches.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That curve was B-E-A-utiful.

Erin said...

Dodger Blue is Pantone 293.

You know, in case any of you were wondering.

Kyle Baker said...

Pantone 293 - my new password...wait, never mind.

MR.F said...

Thanks Erin!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Vote for Bison.

Erin said...

That was a very nice bunt from Kershaw.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Now it's up to Furcal.

MR.F said...

9-pitch at-bat leading to a single for The Bison.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Bases juiced for the O-Dog.

Erin said...

Rancho Ardiendo for Hudson. This would be a nice game for him to really break out of the slump.

Erin said...

I really don't like this ump's strike zone.

Steve Sax said...

Walk Hudson, please

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

O-Dog walks. Bases juiced for the Man-Ram with a run in.

Erin said...

Excellent. Here comes Manny with the bases loaded. Tough pitch to hit a grand slam in, but if anyone can do it...

Steve Sax said...

yay for Hudson, he listens to Sax and takes the walk

Wow, Gameday (computer) is ahead of my MLB at bat 2009 app (iphone)

Josh S. said...

Bases loaded walk!

Rancho Ardiendo por Manuel!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Career leader in grand slams that isn't in pinstripes up.

Steve Sax said...

Manny with the bases loaded. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Steve Sax said...

1-1 to the dreadlocked one

I do not have a good feeling about this

Steve Sax said...

1-2 to Manny, who is not happy with the called strike

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Manny bloop!

Erin said...

Broken bat bloop scores two!

Josh S. said...

Broken Mannywood!

Steve Sax said...

Wow, I'm wrong! 2-RBI broken bat single for MANNY!

Steve Sax said...

I like being wrong sometimes. Even if it's rare.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The 8:00 from Omaha just landed in La Guardia.

Kyle Baker said...

64 pitches already

Erin said...

I haven't been paying much attention to the Mets. I know they have a lot of injured hitters, but how's the bullpen? 65 pitches through two innings for Pelfrey tells me that we'll be seeing the bullpen rather soon.

Kyle Baker said...

I feel guilty even watching that pitch.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The curve is working.

Steve Sax said...

there goes the no-hitter

Steve Sax said...

Mr LA SF, I do not understand the Omaha reference...Is that Vargas?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I was joking, because you could hear the plane coming in for the landing on TV.

Steve Sax said...

Just saw the video of Manny's broken-bat 2-RBI single.

AC could have caught that ball back in his Dodger days.

Steve Sax said...

Oh, got it.

So the new Citi Field is just as noisy as the old Shea? What a surprise!

Still, I'm anxious to see it

Erin said...

My first MLB game ever was at Shea Stadium. Playoff game between the Braves and Mets in 1999. Game three or four. I can't remember which, but I think I remember the Mets winning, so it must have been game four.

Kyle Baker said...

I like the nervous look on Pelfrey's face after every pitch, as in "are they coming from the dugout to get me?"

Kyle Baker said...

Church gobbled up all our good hits in the series earlier this year. Damn you, Church!

Kyle Baker said...

VOTE KEMP!!!!!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

VOTE BISON

Erin said...

YES! Kemp with the rope to Blake at third, and Castillo is tagged in the face!

Orel said...

Bisons carry guns!

Erin said...

Orel, you'd think that would have made it fairer fight with the Native Americans.

Erin said...

Correction:

a fairer fight.

MR.F said...

I love Matt Kemp.

Orel said...

Erin, that's a movie I'd pay to see.

Orel said...

Luis Castillo keeps on giving.

Kyle Baker said...

More fan boos on that bad throw than there were when ManRam stepped up to bat.

Orel said...

Nice to see O-Dog waking up!

Erin said...

I'm heading to Paramount to pitch it right now, Orel.

Bison transform into gun-wielding Special Forces units and rise up against the Native Americans.

First choice for director: Mel Gibson, because he's shown a desire to rewrite history.

Second choice: Michael Bay.

Go Raffy!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

YAY!

Orel said...

That was, as they say, a professional slide.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

100

Orel said...

Sounds more like a Fox movie, Erin.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Manny more runs!

Orel said...

Manny just getting warmed up!

Orel said...

Wasn't Lyons just saying Manny wasn't in game shape?

Erin said...

You're right, Orel. I like Paramount, so I guess I wouldn't want to punish them with this script.

Kyle Baker said...

Lyons has been hammering that point all week. If he was trying to lower expectations, it didn't work on me.

Kyle Baker said...

So glad to see Dessens not playing in Pantone 293.

Erin said...

Uh, Lyons is about to get in trouble here.

Orel said...

Careful, Lyons.

Erin said...

Sounded a whole lot like he said "shocker" not "shucker."

Erin said...

I guess he was saying "shocker."

Orel said...

He did. Wichita State Shockers.

Erin said...

Yeah, I missed the beginning of the conversation, but I went back to listen. There's no way his "do you know what a shocker is?" comment is innocent.

MR.F said...

Can someone provide context for the Psycho Shocker comment, please?

Erin said...

They were talking about Wichita State. I don't know how that started, but the mascot is the Shocker. And Lyons said, "Do yo know what a shocker is?" When Collins said no, Lyons claimed not to know either.

Orel said...

Both Casey Blake and Mike Pelfrey went to Wichita State, whose nickname is the Shockers.

I think Lyons was trying to crack Collins up. To his credit, Collins played it straight.

Erin said...

The Seminoles have the tomahawk chop, the Gators have the Chomp. I think we can assume what Wichita State's gesture is.

MR.F said...

Is "shocker" a derogatory term for something?

Erin said...

I'm going to let Orel find the link for that one.

Orel said...

I enjoy seeing Kershaw strike out Sheffield.

Orel said...

Oh Fanerman. Playing the naif.

MR.F said...

I live in a cave, but it has an internet connection. I'll look it up on urban dictionary when I get off work.

Orel said...

That's a good idea, Fanerman.

Orel said...

Me and Erin are perverts.

Erin said...

Kershaw is pitching well, but his pitch count isn't exactly low.

71 pitches through four innings.

Erin said...

You know it, Orel.

Orel said...

Let's try to get Kershaw into the sixth.

Erin said...

If anyone can do it, we can.

Orel said...

Vote Bison!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Vote Bison.

MR.F said...

It'd be nice if Kershaw could at least get 2 more innings.

Erin said...

Kershaw can lay down a bunt.

Orel said...

Kershaw is pretty handy with the bat.

Steve Sax said...

Jayson werth hit his 18th hr tonight.

Erin said...

Rancho Ardiendo. Again.

Orel said...

It's too bad Werth isn't still a Dodger, but it isn't like they weren't patient with him.

Orel said...

See also: Repko, Jason.

MR.F said...

Other things I never quite got: Rancho Ardiendo.

Erin said...

Well, Ramirez will still bat with the bases loaded.

Erin said...

It's a term courtesy of Karina, fanerman. I think officially it means "burning house," but it's a way Spanish speakers (presumably in Venezuela) indicate that the bases are loaded.

That's right, isn't it guys?

Erin said...

Holy crap. That ump loves to call that outside corner on Manny. That pitch is BS, and Manny should argue it. Good thing we have a five-run lead when he gets thrown out.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Milton Bradley's got nothing on Manny.

Orel said...

I believe "Rancho Ardiendo" is Venezuelan slang for "bases loaded."

Erin said...

I think that ump has a problem with steroid users.

Orel said...

Manny, you could have just asked for a rest.

Orel said...

I think Juan Pierre paid Manny to do that.

Kyle Baker said...

Good for Manny. Both those calls were horseshit calls, and he should have argued them. Can't wait til ump gets to the clubhouse later and reviews them, the useless shitbag.

MR.F said...

Ohhh awesome. Thanks!

Orel said...

Slow game.

Orel said...

An umpire who feels remorse is an umpire without a job.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I don't get why he walked to first after the pitch. Even if the ump called it a ball (which it was) he would have had a 2-2 count.

Orel said...

Four-pitch walk.

Orel said...

Pitcher's best friend!

Orel said...

Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read!

Orel said...

Our-heinous Reyes?

Kyle Baker said...

Dusty says: If you're not pregnant, don't wear those hideous curtain blouse/dress thingies that makes every woman who wears them LOOK pregnant.

MR.F said...

Nice, quick inning.

Erin said...

I'm with you, Dusty. Technically, that's a "baby doll" cut, I think, and I hate it.

Orel said...

Dude should know better than to assume pregnancy.

Erin said...

True. There was a comedian who once said, "Unless you can see the baby coming out from between the woman's legs, don't assume she's pregnant." Or something similar. I have no idea who it was.

Kyle Baker said...

I've taken in so much information in my beer drinking, game watching, work avoiding afternoon...Pantone 293, baby doll cut...what's next???

Orel said...

Shocker, Rancho Ardiendo.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Hola los todos!

Kyle Baker said...

re: TBD discussion on TV broadcast

I have given this announcing team some time, and have set aside my usual pessimism, but I'm really starting to get annoyed.

Erin said...

I'll tell you right now that I really wish broadcasters would stop using the term "fist" to describe anything at all.

Orel said...

Kershaw at 101 pitches through six. Nice.

Erin said...

HOME RUN DEWITT!!

Kyle Baker said...

Smack it up, Dewitt!!!!!!!!!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

DeWitt loves the Mets

Neeebs (The Original) said...

I want more runs!

Erin said...

Right off the $5 Footlong sign.

And then he slipped on home plate.

Erin said...

All right, peeps. I'm going for a run before it gets too dark. The Dodgers better friggin' hold this lead.

MR.F said...

Excellent!

Kyle Baker said...

Dodger defense is poetry in motion today. Rock solid, lads!

Erin said...

Oh man. I totally thought Juan had a homer there. Crazy. Just bounced off the wall.

Kyle Baker said...

Punish it, Beast Mode!!!!

NicJ said...

Jp is amazing.

Wesley Vento said...

can't keep the beast mode down

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Erin, I thought you were going for a run? Get going, girl.

Erin said...

I know, I know, Neeebs. I just can't walk away. And summer days mean sunlight for a looong time.

MR.F said...

Beastly!

Erin said...

Lyons really knows Oliver Platt's résumé.

Kyle Baker said...

Oliver Platt...or a fat, degenrate Eraserhead?

Orel said...

I heart insurance.

Unknown said...

Vote Bison Ardiendo!

Orel said...

I'm voting as we speak.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Vote Bison

Orel said...

8-0!

Erin said...

I've been voting all game.

But now I really have to go for a run.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Erin feels that an 8-0 lead is safe here.

Orel said...

Pat Mischa Barton?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Homeward Bound. I'm comfortable with this lead.

Orel said...

Is it just me or are Collins & Lyons trading heavily in the sexual innuendo tonight?

Erin said...

Okay, I haven't left yet. I'm just a liar.

And yeah, was that Misch Mash comment from Lyons some sort of ejaculation joke? I didn't get that.

Inning over. I'll be missing the rest of this game. Hold on, boys.

Orel said...

Vargas sighting!

Orel said...

I know you're still there, Erin.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Two batters in and Vargas is going back to the DL.

Orel said...

BEAST MODE diving catch!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

200

Orel said...

MLASF is on fire!

Orel said...

Mets have not been shut out in consecutive games since May 24-25, 2005.

Orel said...

Dodgers must be salivating at facing Oliver Perez tomorrow.
