Jason Schmidt (1-1, 7.88) vs. Tommy Hanson (5-1, 2.95).
COMMENTS: Talk about a study in contrasts. Today the Dodgers start a once overpowering pitcher ending his career as a overpaid paperweight, and the Braves start a 22-year-old hotshot rookie with a plus-fastball and his entire career ahead of him. Do you like where this is going? I do not.
Atlanta, third place in the NL East with a 52-50 record, is 10-11 against NL West teams this season. Today would be a wonderful day to witness the Dodger bats thaw further, as we would hate to continue "all the weeping, moaning and teeth-gnashing about the weak offense of a team that's [24] games over .500," as my Mets fan friend puts it.
(100SS. Game 4. Right here.)

You would want a sock full of pennies for Loney
Huge Rumor going around that lands us Halladay...for a big cost. Stay tuned.
Furcal, SS
Ethier, RF
Manny, LF
Blake, 3B
Loney, 1B
Kemp, CF
Martin, C
Hudson, 2B
Schmidt, P
New lack-of-trade thread up top.
Well, Loney's not scratched. So, I guess that settles that.
E batting 2nd. Interesting.
Kind of an odd lineup here.
I like this lineup. Raffy and O-Dog just aren't the magical pairing they were earlier in the season anymore.
We have some of the best #8 hitters of all time.
Hmm...no word yet, so the rumor might not be right?
Kemp hitting 6th with the usual starters!!
Well, Sax, you're the only one reporting it.
Where is this rumor coming from?
New Rumor is that Looney will grow a goatee to at least look more like AGon.
Dusto will not be fooled.
I'll betcha that Loney bangs one out tonight. I just got that feeling.
Any takers?
Have Raffy and O Dogg ever been magic together this year? I remember when O Dogg was leading the world in hits back in April, but that was when Raffy was doing his best Andruw Jones (circa 2008) impression.
I seem to recall Dre hitting in front of Manny last year and it working out well for all parties minus the opposition.
Neeebs, what odds will you give me that Loney GIDP instead?
The very first game both Raffy and O-Dog led off with hits.
I don't know about Loney hitting one out, but the edge should be off some of the guys now that the deadline has passed.
I'm over the Halladay/A-Gon pipe dreams now. It's time to shut everybody up and win it all with who we've got.
Still plenty of guys who could be put on the waiver.
Hong: Low odds on the GIDP, high odds on the HR.
So...if Loney hits the HR, you buy me two dogs and a beer at the next game that you and I attend at the same time. If Loney hits into a GIDP, I buy you a beer. If Loney does both, its a wash.
Deal?
I want some of this action. Anyone going on Monday?
Yeah Im way over the AGon thing. That was never a thing, then it was briefly the possibility of a thing, and now it's not a thing at all.
I was always more into the whole we need another starting pitcher thing. That thing didn't work out, either, obviously.
Now I feel...(no)thing.
In Loney i trust.
I'f I'm buying two dogs I want a pretzel for the DP. I'll raise it to a "premium" ale instead of Bud Light if I am granted this salty request.
In Loney I trust... a pop out to second.
Hung: OK deal.
Just hit me: How big a set of balls does it take for Colletti to stand pat on dealing for a starting pitcher on the same day he trots out J Schmidt to start an away game against a decent team?
He either knows something we don't, or we know something he doesn't.
@Dusto: "In Loney I trust... a pop out to second."
It's an improvement to a GIDP ;)
I'm coming down from the AGon juju that I was huffing earlier. Me likey Loney.
Hong, put on some Allman Brothers and have some OJ. You'll feel better on the way down.
GIDP: that doesn't mean he wont do it.
I ask my James Loney bobblehead if he will hit a homerun today. He shook his head "yes."
I then asked him if he will hit into a double play today. He shook his head "yes."
Neeebs,
Consult the crazy 8 ball for confirmation.
Harold Reynolds on MLB Network:
"I'm worried about Jason Schmidt."
That is some crack analysis.
DB: I lost my crazy eight ball.
All I have is my talking Yoda who says, "the force and its wisdom is all around you. Ask yourself a yes or no question, says the force."
I'll consult him when I get home after 7:00pm., but I'm afraid it will be too late by then.
They have a pic of the new Manny II bobble posted, but I can't link to it.
Go here and click on the Sept 16 date:
Curtain Call
Wow. Manny's bobblehead has EXCELLENT posture!
Neeebs, maybe your Loney bobblehead was indicating that he'd be robbed of a home run and then Casey will get doubled up at first.
well god damn i just spent 10 minutes getting that link right, and it's since been posted on the front page.
oh well, great (er, bored) minds...
Facing Adam LaRoche for the next two games after this one won't be fun.
V Mart getting all weepy in the lockerroom before he heads out for a much better/more fun club to play for.
Cheers for Manny in ATL?
That was an uneventful inning.
We've turned into total chumps in the first inning lately.
manny looking waaaay out of sorts. still.
why oh why must charter cable in pasadena not carry the game in HD and instead show the angels game in HD tonight? i really want to kick someone or something.
Tales from the SoSG Staff Room:
Sax goes running all over the offices saying "Oh My God We've Just Traded XXXX to get Halladay"
Orel tells Sax to calm down and wait to see it confirmed
Sax keeps running around the office
Orel hits Sax in the face to knock him out
Sax falls unconscious, then wakes up twenty minutes later to find out the trade rumor is indeed not true.
The wisdom of Orel prevails. Thanks, Orel!
Where was that rumor from?
Wow! Did you guys read the report on the Gonzo/Heath Bell trade? Word is the deal would've been Gonzalez and Bell for Martin, Loney, DeWitt, McDonald, and DeJesus.
100SS results through three games, just posted.
Orel, in the lead!
so was it the wisdom of orel, or just the back of his hand, that prevailed?
@Mr LA SF, I can't tell you but I paid good money for it...
@Dusty Baker: Both
@Dusty Baker: Orel has been lifting lately by the way. I didn't even see that one coming; I was watching his left.
Schmidt is walking on a tightrope right now.
We deserve points for assists!
Colletti, are you watching?
Still want to go on the broadcast in a minute?
I wouldn't mind getting Garland off the D-Back scrap heap. The fact that the team and Garland hate each other makes it all the more reasonable.
We could have Garland throw at some DBacks, too.
Not that I would encourage that.
Dusty, are you saying Charter Pasadena sometimes carries HD Dodger games? Charter Glendale never carries the PT games in HD. It pisses me off.
Schmidt's gonna be walking a fine line today. That inning was not mind-settling.
The Angels didn't make any trades, did they?
No
Two straight five-pitch walks, but Anderson ends the inning.
Schmidt has not topped 87 mph yet through one inning of play
EK, so you're saying Schmidt's reaching tops on his velocity?
I mean Sax, not EK
Maybe I'm just pretending to screw up in order to inflate the thread?
Or maybe I made a legitimate mistake?
Maybe I'm using this situation in order to inflate it altogether?
Hanson is painting corners.
@Josh S
Yes,I get about a third of games on Prime Ticket in HD. The rest are in extreme blur-o-vision. All the other station (is it KCAL? K-something local) are in HD and look beautiful.
What pisses me off is that I waited patiently (ok, not patiently) for the big HD switchover, and then I still have to watch this old skool early 2009 crap.
This is gonna be a tough night for the offense.
[Sorry for the poor sentence construction in that last post...jesus, today has killed me!]
Victor Martinez weeping? that's heartbreaking. I recall he had said he wanted to be an Indian until the end of his career.
Hey PT had Colletti on the phone - just caught the end, shat did he say?
oops what did he say?
Schmidt's not fooling anyone. They're making contact.
Colletti said at one pt in talks w Jays, they wanted ALL our top level prospects but not much off roster. He didn't want to part with all of them.
Schmidt didn't make a lot of pitches. That's good.
"shat" was appropriate enough, Cora.
Good for Ned, screw the Jays. Wow, they are crushing the ball off Schmidt, but all right to the outfielders. One of these is going to fly out of here soon.
Let's see how the back 3 fare against Hanson.
Schmidt is pitching to contact. Come on, its obvious.
Barbaro Canizares played for Aguilas del Zulia. He sucked big time, specially on his defense. Dodgers, start hitting there, he won't catch anything!
It's not like he can do anything else. Unless you know of a big-league batter who can't catch up to an 87-mph fastball.
colletti made good pt re: if we give away the entire farm then next yr we have a $16 mil pitcher we have to pay and nothing below the roster to help replenish.
"Unless you know of a big-league batter who can't catch up to an 87-mph fastball."
You mean like Russell Martin?
Or Andruw Jones of last year
i said that, BTW, so he'd know it and do well during this at bat.
Hanson looks unhittable.
The umps head looks like it is exploding in front of the SunTrust ad.
100
Damn
100
100
Give me an assist, at least.
Stuck the landing.
There you go MLASF. No controversy here
O-Dog singles.
are there negative pts in your game where someone gets the 100th AND still says damn? ;-)
Vinny "The Rat" Rottino?
I think he knows people who can get some things done if you need a favor.
Damn.
That would have been ball four.
Can't these people get a real city where it doesn't rain out a baseball game?
But Dusty, as an East Coaster will tell you, that's real baseball.
MLASF, I can just feel the east coast bias vibe trickling out from your post.
A 7-pitch at-bat to the pitcher. That does not ease the mind.
But Dusty, as anyone at ESPN will tell you, there is no East Coast Bias. It's just a favoring of the more popular teams, who just happen to reside on the East Coast.
I was hoping for an anti-ESPN reference out of that exchange - thanks!
Crapola. Schmidt's in trouble.
Runners at the corners and McCann is up. Have a bad feeling about this.
Whew, that was close.
Kemp fielded that as well as he could...kept the ball in front of him.
And the inning is over!
So much negativity from you Karina. ;=)
Hahahahahaha, you're influencing me.
Don't turn to the dark side!
Manny-single.
Beard-single. Something's cooking...
Tommy may be good, but he needs to learn that you don't throw shitty curve balls to Manny or average fastballs to Blake.
I'm out. Hopefully when I come back, a win will be under the Dodgers' belt.
Loney gave that a ride.
@Fanerman: thanks for the reminder :)
Damn. How far did that ball go?
Wow. Hanson hung the same outside curve to Bison that he did to Manny. The difference is that Bison actually hit it further, but not far enough.
Epale, all! First time through the order, Hanson shut us down. Second time, at least we're making contact. He might just be touchable.
That's probably also what Braves just said in the dugout re Schmidt, Orel.
Orel - I doubt he throws many more of those mediocre fastballs he threw on the Blake single, but he did hang at least 2 curves.
I fear Anderson will tee off on one of Schmidt's fastball/changeups. That said, if Jason keeps throwing his curve with that kind of break and slow speed, he might just be useful.
Schmidt isn't exactly cruising, but he's getting it done so far.
No surprises with Schmidt. You know what you're going to get.
E-6 doesn't help.
This primary camera angle is disorienting.
Pods fired their hitting coach Lefebvre. That'll change things.
That K by Schmidt was Madduxian.
A K?!
Audience choice: Which other game going on right now do I pull up on MLB.TV and watch on mute on my computer while I continue to watch Dodgers?
Tell me what to do.
Is it Nats v Pirates to try to see who is still on either team? Rust belt matchu between Detroit and Cleveland?
Surely that was a 'J' or an 'L' not a 'K'!!!
PITT v. Nat
I'd watch Rockies-Reds. Rockies winning, by the way.
Mmmm, we're boppin' this guy!
Just gotta cash these hits in.
Pretty nasty to O-Dog.
Schmidt not helping his own cause.
MSNBC headline:
"Ortiz still ‘trying to find out what’s going on’"
This is like OJ still looking for the real killer.
Also could tune in to Boston v Os...Os are winning late.
NOW you get a hit, Furcal.
Bunt fly out? Come on!
Raffy! Keeping up the hot streak.
I was hoping for a single. Instead ANDRE with the rare ROAD HR! 3-0 Dodgers!
Ethier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe the 2 spot is good for him.
CLUTCH MODE!
That'll help the LOB dilemma
I walking around frisco and I just heard a collective groan.
1st HR on this road trip.
Kill that rally!!!!
Joe Morgan may be an idiot when it comes to stats, but he knows how to play the game of baseball. Tommy just threw Andre a hanging slider, which is another word for a crappy fastball.
Nic-J
Maybe the people you heard had just read the latest Plaschke column?
@Nic "I walking around frisco and I just heard a collective groan."
SWEET
One more inning from Schmidt then four hours of heavy rains should do it.
Manny = Slump
but
Ethier = Earl Weaver
Is it me or does Jason Schmidt appear to have gained some control?
Dare I say...Schmidt is cruising?
Gameday is nuts. Score is 3-0 but it doesn't register Ethier's HR, now it's frozen.
Actual game is nuts, too. It showed Schmidt just having a 6-pitch inning.
If Manny's hand is really bothering him, he really should just rest and let it heal.
Turn on the game after a run and the Dodgers are up. It's a good day.
Schmidt at 69 pitches.
King James, what's up with you?
Beard gunned down at the plate. Perfect relay by the Braves.
Casey Blake forgets that Garret Anderson can still chuck it. That said, nice to see Russ crank it and make Tommy Hanson look like a hoser, eh.
Shld have held Beard at 3rd. I'm risk averse in this game and with GA in outfield.
Out at home, gentlemen.
Nice camera shot of Flat Breezy in the pen.
I didn't know GA still had it.
Blew that 84 MPH fastball by him!
They keep Sherrill in the Noob Cage, apparently.
He looked like a caged beast waiting for his moment to escape.
Schmidt walks the leadoff man. One more inning would be great.
Trancoso getting loose in bullen. Where is that 3-hour thunderstorm?
Hey, it's GA.
Hello to all 100SS lurkers!
Is this when we talk about how stupid the tomahawk chop is?
Good thing Garret didn't quite get all of that.
I know Canizares will get me mad at some pint in this weekend
Orel - Remember when that was at its worst? Around, say, 1993-1999?
Karina says this Barbaro fellow sucks. And he strikes out!
Yeah. The tomahawk is pretty lame.
@Ali "Orel - Remember when that was at its worst? Around, say, 1993-1999?"
Ugh, don't remind me. Totally insufferable.
It's ALWAYS time to talk about how stupid the tomahawk chop is.
Another k!
Jason Mower!
Orel - Those TBS games were absolutely torture.
COL 3
CIN 3
Hope he sucks this weekend.
Schmidt at 86 pitches. Does Torre bat for him?
200
When did Ned trade for a better Jason Schmidt?
200
