The second-place Rockies are also idle today, but we've got three other NL West games going on today:
- The Giants wrap up their series with Altanta today, first pitch 10a PT. Barry Zito (5-10) takes the hill against Kenshin Kawakami (5-7), whose name has a whole lot of Ks. The Giants start the day in third place in the NL West, 10.5 games back of the Dodgers.
- The Padres play this afternoon at 4p in Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park. Kevin Correia (6-7) vs. Cole Hamels (a surprisingly pedestrian 5-5). Pads are 24 games behind the Dodgers and this game might not be so interesting, although the Phillies just lost their first game last night, breaking a 10-game win streak.
- Finally, the Diamondbacks host the Pirates, first pitch 6.40p. Dan Haren (10-5) takes on the steakhouse of Charlie Morton (2-2). Snakes are 21 GB the Dodgers, but with Haren on the mound it's a compelling game, at least.
Comment away, Dodger fans!

"The Giants start the day in third place in the NL West, 10.5 games back of the Dodgers."
Sheer poetry...
Giants score one run in the top of the first on a kung fu panda double. 1-0 Giants, after 1/2 inning.
Tied up after a Yunel Escobar homer.
Josh, what work are YOU blowing off to comment?
I'm blowing off some spreadsheets, btw.
Whoops, Bengie Molina throws out the runner at second, CS. Two away with Casey Crotchman up.
I'm doing school library database cleanup, but sometimes it takes a little while for a record to load.
@Sax "I'm blowing off some spreadsheets, btw."
Why? Were they dusty! HA HA HA
When did we pick up this whole "@XXX" convention? I mean, I like it, but is it ours? Or is it common? Who else uses this convention?
1-1 tie, middle four in Atlanta
Midway through the fourth, I am noting that none of Zito's pitches have topped 87 mph.
So maybe there can be a starting rotation spot for Jason Schmidt, after all.
@Sax: I think it's from Twitter.
The @ is also seen on blogs that have a reply button in their comment system.
Bases were loaded thanks to three Zito walks, and Casey Crotchman Ks. 1-1 through four.
@Orel: Thanks.
Hey, there's no need to use that kind of language. "Zito" rubs some people the wrong way.
Zito with a leadoff single in the fifth.
Aaugh! My ears!
Er, eyes.
Google is sporting a Comic-Con logo today in honor of SDCC. Super-cool.
Two on, one out for the Matt Kemp slot stealing dude
Sax, are you going?
Pulling for the Braves has the additional benefit of them closing the gap with Philly. I really don't want the Phils anywhere near the playoffs (even though we've done OK against this year's team).
leadoff double for Randy Winn in the seventh, but the 2-3-4 batters couldn't cash him in. 1-1, now through seven frames.
@Orel, I am not going to be @SDCC. Howzabout you? I think it's time to dust off that Vampirella costume of yours.
Two on, none out in the top of the eighth for the Giants.
Mobile Gameday died after "In play, run(s)".
Well, this inning isn't going so well for Atlanta. Pitcher gets hit on a comebacker, replacement comes in, and all hell breaks loose on throwing errors.
5-1 SF.
It's getting fugly. 5-1 Giants in the top of the 8th.
Eight men later, the Giants are finally retired.
5-1 SF going to the bottom of the eighth.
Mark Buehrle might be on the verge of something noteworthy.
Mark Buehrle has a perfect game through 7 2/3.
mlb.com is doing a free live look-in
http://mlb.mlb.com/media/player/mp_tpl_3_1.jsp?w=reflector%3A40700&vid=7759&pid=gen_video&cid=mlb&v=2
It's now through 8.
The free mlb.com video feed I posted only goes live when Buehrle's pitching.
Shhhh, no more Buehrle talk....
The Sox broadcasters themselves said to call everyone and let them know about what's going on. I was just doing my job... (Although out of respect, I won't mention what it is again, even if the Sox broadcasters used the specific words!)
That...was...one...hell...of a catch.
Gameday just scared me, it said Kapler had doubled...it was a fly out
HE DID IT!
SF 5, ATL 1, game over
HE GOT IT!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Buehrle no hit-no run for the White Sox, Manny's grand slam last night, free afternoon from work, tomorrow's a holiday! this is perfect!
getting back to puzzle...
It was a perfect game, well done Buehrle!
Thank goodness I saw that last frame.
Enough about that perfect game, big frickin' deal.
Padres lost 9-4 to the Phils.
Arizona is up 11-4 in the bottom of the eighth on Pittsburgh. Haren only went five and gave up 4 ER, so Gutierrez is in line for the win.
