Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.96) vs. Joel Pineiro (9-9, 2.95).
COMMENTS: In their past five starts, the Dodgers have a 1-4 record, have been outscored 33-14 — and outhit their opponents 52-50. (They also stranded a total of 44 men on base.) The main culprits for this mini losing streak have been poor situational hitting and an ineffective bullpen.
Dodger players have the additional pressure of knowing other NL teams are improving...with more deals on the way. Dodger fans have the additional pressure of knowing Vin Scully's wonderful ride has an end date. But at least Mark Loretta pitched last night. How cool was that?
P.S.: Don't forget 100SS rules still apply!

i totally missed Loretta pitching. dang
ok i just saw him on MLB.com. lucky Ludwick didnt make the score even worse.

same old same
I've been mostly OK with Kemp in the 8 spot, but it has really backfired in the last couple of games.
The problem I have with Kemp batting 8th is that he usually gets on board with two outs, and then it's left to the pitcher. How many times have the Dodgers runners on with the pitcher batting in the last few games?
Bill Shaikin: Dodgers Softening Stance on Trading Billingsley
The only mention of Chad in the article:
"The Dodgers have refused to include Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley in a package for Halladay. There has been discussion within the organization about whether to reconsider that stance on Billingsley, although the Dodgers are not expected to do so."
August 1 can't come soon enough.
No one is scratched from the lineup. That's good, right?
We're better off looking for someone who can pitch the 7th and 8th.
But I do wish we could have pulled off that deal.
Giants Get Sanchez
More importantly, Giants gave up their #4 prospect according to Baseball America.
@MLASF
That seems more like a trade to make a trade by the deadline trade. Wasn't impressed by Sanchez when last we saw him. Besides, he comes with a bum knee.
Good job, Gnats!
Sanchez grew up a dodger fan and his dad is still a diehard
must be weird for him, but its a business, he understands
Rockies and Mets were rained out. They'll play two tomorrow. Giants won.
The Sanchez deal was just a player swap with no money exchanged? That's a pretty good deal for the pirates they weren't gonna keep him anyways.
Im still pushing for a bat that Manny can protect. (Victor Martinez for Loney). I'm not big on ole crazy eyes and quite frankly think he is overrated among all Dodgers. League average with streaks. We can definitely make an upgrade at first.
Seeing Loretta pitch was pretty cool, in an otherwise upsetting game. It would have been awesome to see Loney pitch too!
Game is under way
And O-Dog singles
1st & 2nd, guess how many outs.
LOB Counter: 2
LOB: 2.
The Pods are looking to unload Adrian Gonzalez. Too bad he already hit all of his home runs in the first half.
Of course, with Manny in the line up. . .
anyone else frustrated?
I'm going on record here as saying this team will not get off the schnide until it hits Atlanta, where they always seem to do OK.
Of course, they usually hit Atlanta in May, not July/August when the city resembles the 7th Circle of Hell.
Freakin' Julio Lugo.
@Koufax "anyone else frustrated?"
Yes! Although also constantly trying to remind myself how lucky we are.
This isn't looking good.
This team has performed beyond expectations. In the offseason, i had nightmares with the pitching staff, didn't you?
@Karina:
Now your nightmares are coming true. Having the best record in baseball is only good in October.
I feel like such a fatalist.
Kemp heart attack.
Now's the time to worry: Two outs.
That was close
I know Rbnlaw, but i do think they could have a couple of cold streaks in the season, which they have failed to produce, much to our pleasure. This season has been so remarkable, we might have forgotten they are still humans who commit mistakes.
Yay. No runs.
But it's early. Going to son's basketball practice. I'll be playing my new favorite game:
"Suffering With Steiner"
Another LOB in the making. Loney singles.
MR LASF: you are depressing me big time.
That's how I roll
Number one reason for trade deadline to pass: we can stop wishing we had Halladay and be happy with who we do have.
We just have the worst freakin' luck right now.
Now it's up to (sigh) Kershaw.

That is my anti-LOB rememdy that I learned from a Hawaiian witch doctor.
From next inning on the curse shall be broken.
With that, I'm off to din din with the family.
Kershaw's fastball looks good.
Kershaw owns all. If he is really throwing a two-seamer now, he doesn't need another pitch. Four-seamer at 94-96, two-seamer at 90-92 and Buggs Bunny at 67(!)-72. That is plenty.
Really? A changeup wouldn't put him over the top?
Hey, no LOB's that inning, what d'ya know.
What do you know, Neeebs' curse worked! No LOB that inning!
MLASF, we're on the same wavelength.
@ Orel
we are lucky, very lucky considering, just need to start getting some extra base hits, hits with runners in scoring position and maybe a little impact from emanuel ramirez.
When was the last time we had the pitcher lead off? I don't remember.
Good job, Clayton. 1-2-3.
True, Koufax. Manny has not been helping lately.
Heee's back, and he's got a new trick
Magical Kershaw is ten times as slick
As the last time, the last time you saw him
Now you can see why we really adore him
Our BABIP must be verrrrry low right about now.
a spot of luck there
Casey triple! I'm holding my tongue for the time being.
Yeah Blake!!! Triple action!
Ludwick mis-plays the ball, Casey gets three bags! One out, Ethier better score him if he knows what's good for him
Or Loney
OH MY GOD WE ACTUALLY SCORED
WTF RBI OMG
RBI for Loney. Can you really trade the guy who has the most RBI's on the team?
FINALLY!!!!!!
If we can trade the guy in the lineup with the most steals, then we can trade anyone.
Well, even when we do score we still GIDP
Now that's more like it. Inning-ending DP.
@Alex Cora: exactly and whatever else they are saying, he's a decent defensive first base with potential.
@Fanerman: exactly my thoughts, i want August 1st to come fast.
I am currently looking up Brendan Ryan's UZR.
anyone else see that torre is giving schmidt another start in atlanta?
Crapola
Grrr, it is hard to hate on Pujols, but Darnnit!!
12.9
Anyone think Torre might be trying to shame the front office into trading for another starter by starting Schmidt again?
@Orel: that's almost surreal.
Oh, and they can't trade Kemp - I just bought tickets for his bobblehead night.
@ orel
I hope so, but who is available?
Popup helps.
Pujols moves like he has a sore back.
About damn time the other team GIDP's.
Nice DP - and nice scoop by Loney.
Nice scoop, James! Inning-ending DP!
Nice
Seems Orel, AC, and I agree the DP was "nice"
I hope bills was taking notes.
Lee looks so ugly in Philly red
Matt is due for a HR.
@Karina "that's almost surreal."
@Koufax "I hope so, but who is available?"
Halladay is the obvious target but let's say Toronto doesn't lower their price. I'm pretty sure Colletti doesn't offer anyone from the 25-man roster. That means either acquiring a fifth-type starter (Washburn?) or Ned's favorite, a "veteran reliever." The latter seems the most likely. I read a rumor of Elbert and DeWitt for Sherrill. I could see that happening.
@Eric Karros: "great minds run Dodgers blogs"
Hi EK!
Not due for that K. Ugh.
Gee, I wonder what EK is thinking of....
Hey Orel...what do you mean?
Hey pretty quiet with everyone comments except for the Sons that last couple of minutes....hmmm....
I think if the team needs a trade, it has to be for a fifth starter or a long reliever, without touching the young core of the team.
I'm able to join the thread cuz it's an early game
I say trade for Chien-Ming Wang
1ook Who's Talking Too, baby!
100
Damn, EK.
Doh!
Don't be so mean with Eric, he only wants to hang out for a while...
so here it comes:
I demand assist points!
Gameday is slow
EK, are you good at getting concert tickets too?
Epale Karina
Let's see if the Dodgers can score with 2 outs.
Come on Odogg.
We all excel in certain areas
Run, Furcal.
hmm hate to be negative karina but i think not
hudson strikes out a lot these days
So...a trade for Wang? Eh? Eh?
My Gameday said: in play (no outs) and the O Dogg struck out.
Mine did that too, Karina! What a tease.
Wang? Wasn't he on the DL? Although I agree a change of scenery (read: NL) would benefit him.
Whether by radio, or by Gameday, there will always be teases.
I'm joking of course. Wang is having season-ending surgery. He just was never the same after he injured himself running the paths last season.
That is true MLASF, though few of them involve the O-Dogg
It can be frustrating...takes a lot of time to crush a stray of hope.
At least Gameday doesn't say "AND MATT KEMP MAKES A SPECTACULAR...attempt"
kkkkershaw is good
I have a theory i will die for some heart attack induced by a sports broadcaster or an italian on a penalty kick at the World Cup.
DirecTV is sticking it to Time Warner for blacking out on the BobbleSlam.
Manny, you are due for a big hit.
Manny-single.
Manny's slump is over! Over, I tells ya!
Sounds like you better stick with Gameday then, Karina
My Gameday said he lined out.
Crapola, another GIDP.
DP
DP
Hahahahaha Eric. Maybe...
Training Day is on TV. Great movie.

At least we have a shot at the cards bullpen today.
Kershaw looks good, and he's only three batters over the minimum.

@Eric Karros: pretty much any Denzel Washington is a very good movie.
Guess there'll no be #200 tonight.
So much for making it to that bullpen.
I found a better deal than that. One word: Costco
We have to get to 200 tonight so that I can be positive again.....I just so negative right now!
the cardinals announcers have a man crush on holliday, wonder what they will think next year when he leaves them for a team that will pay him money.
Whew, Kershaw almost got no one.
Karina, they just showed the part when Ethan Hawke almost gets killed by the card-playing hoodlums but they let him go because earlier that day he had saved the cousin of one of them. Great scene.
KKKKKershaw gets the Russian
YAY MANNY!
holy shit!
I'm speechless.
That movie rocks!. I was watching the Yankees-Rays game but i switched to watch some rerun of Dexter.
WOW
Manny Ramirez just bailed out Kershaw of a crappy pitch, a home run, and a loss.
Hot damn! Woot Woot Woot!
Dammit what happened?
Thanks for the description, Mr LASF
@Erin#2: your only chance is a late Post Game Thread.
Damn Ryan and his cool stirrups.
That catch sealed Kershaw's Pitcher of the Month award
Ho-Lee-Shit.
Manny gave those sanctimonious Card fans a middle finger. Hopefully he jacks one out right now.
im sick of looking at terrible moustaches
Doot doot doot doot
Doot doot Doot Doot
Doot doot doot doot
Dooooo dooot doooo dooot do dooot
CHARGE!!!!!
*Does the wave*
Damn, Manny is really in a funk. Think it is the hand?
I guess the only way we are winning tonight is with a shutout.
tony going with the the lefty pinch hitter against kkkkkkershaw
good move mr. larussa
Obviously that didn't work.
E-Rasmus
love to see lugo not hustling that ground ball out, brings back pleasant memories
KKKKKKKERSHAW GETS HIM!
Clayton is such a stud. I hope we're not extending him too much.
solid solid outing, lets win this thing for him
Freakin' amazing.
Clayton Kershaw is officially an ace pitcher right now.
112 pitches, that matches his season high against the Marlins back in Florida.
KershACE.
I haven't seen the Manny catch. Was it as amazing as Charlie Steiner described?
So as not to jinx the game, I'm not starting the Post-Game Thread until it's over. So 200 is still a possibility.
2 Ks on the 8th. Excellent, Public Enemy Number One.
@ orel
did u read the article tim kurkjian wrote about pitch counts? if not it was pretty interesting, i would argue that 110 total pitches is not going to overextend a 21 year old arm that much. he didnt pitch in too many stressful positions tonight.
@PC "I haven't seen the Manny catch. Was it as amazing as Charlie Steiner described?"
For once, yes.
NOW we can attack the bullpen.
Koufax, do you have a link?
Really? I really thought it was Steiner being Steiner. Excited over nothing.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=kurkjian_tim&id=4359938
lets get big john an insurance run here
I would really like another run to finish off the game.....
I demand insurance!
Kershaw just grabbed his stuff and headed to the clubhouse. Big JB is coming in for the bottom of the 9th.
Looks like this thread has some life
loney very solid on an otherwise forgetable night for the dodgers at the plate
Martin has to get it out of the infield.
C'mon insurance!!!
Thanks, Koufax.
so russel is not wearing batting gloves anymore?
We are going to end this night on a POSITIVE note......
Collins just noted that.
Martin going old-school with no batting gloves...
200 Bitches
