Who Wants to Represent SoSG on the Diamond?

The softball diamond, that is.

TheLFP.com made this graphic JUST FOR US!

M. Brown at theLFP.com is organizing a 2012 Blogger Softball Tournament:

All of the bloggers that are pictured have been contacted and have expressed an interest in playing. [...]

Teams need a min of twelve players and must have a min. of two female players per team. The tournament date is still being worked on to satisfy all the teams and players. The location will be at the Big League Dreams park in West Covina. All teams will play a minimum of three games in the tournament. It will also include food and beverages during the day.

The charity I’m working with will hopefully be announced shortly. It's one that all Dodger fans can get behind and support. If you have a business or company and would like to sponsor a team. Feel free to contact me also. This tournament is open to anyone who wants to participate male or female over the age of 18.

There was some chatter in another thread about throwing together a team of SoSG readers, so how about it? Do we have enough interest to field a roster of at least twelve people who are of legal voting age? Including two females? Tell us what you think in the comments!

In. My skills at Bases Loaded on the NES should translate to real life, right?

Steve Sax said...

As long as it's RBI Baseball.

As for the female players, we could always chip in for that sex change operation that Pedro Guerrero always wanted.

Josh S. said...

BREAKING: Mrs. S has agreed (pending a physical) to be a last-minute fill-in, should we be only able to field one female player.

She would like to warn everyone that she's an automatic out.

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Im definitely in! Sounds like too much fun to pass up, and my WAR and VORP are off the charts...

NicJ said...

I picked a horrible time to tear my meniscus.

Bring in the ringers!!!

Johnny Blanchard said...

If you'll take an infrequent poster/ RSS-subscriber, I'd love to play. Knowing you guys, it'll be some weird contest to get in that I have no chance to win, so I hope I can sneak on. Centerfielder.

Pistol Pete Reiser said...

Commenced negotiations with my agent (Mrs PPR) reg: trip south to attend...

Just a thought, invite the new Josh Rawitch (sp?) to attend, build a relationship with the bloggers, etc...

Dusty Baker said...

@Josh re Mrs. S:

Her nickname will be "Uribe."

Dusty Baker said...

To quote myself from another thread: "We need Spank to throw at people's head."

Loney Fan said...

I have been instructed by my agent that I am unable to commit to any softball related activities without his prior consent. You can reach Mr. Rosenhaus at his offices.

Josh S. said...

@Dusty: "Felez"

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I demand $50 and a twelve-pack of Cherry Coke, or I am taking my talents to Moriyama's team.

Josh S. said...

Huh? My reply to Dusty got eaten.

Josh S. said...

Trying again:

@Dusty: "Felez"

I think I can find a glove without a hole in it by spring. Sign me up!

John G said...

if you need anyone else, i'd love to play. i can help with the uniforms too!

Dusty Baker said...

John G in the mix!

Dusty Baker said...

"Felez" That is so rich, Josh. MVP comment.

Steve K said...

Why aren't the Sons included on the main poster? Is this the red-headed stepchild of Dodger blogs? Why didn't anyone tell me? Am I the red-headed stepchild of followers?

Steve K said...

I have interest in participating, but I don't think you can count on me being there. Plus, my skills are even more primitive than RBI Baseball. I had Nintendo Baseball.

Dusty Baker said...

If we aren't the red-headed stepchild of Dodger blogs, I don't know who is.

Neeebs said...

Interest is high, depending on the date/time.

If its unlimited high arc pitch, you may have found your pitcher.

Jason said...

I am strongly considering another SoSG road trip for this. I am not a ringer, however.

Dusty Baker said...

@Neeebs

Actually, we were really looking to fill the belly itcher spot.

Dusty Baker said...

I believe a critical question has not yet been asked or answered: Can we drink and play at the same time?

Steve K said...

@DB

It didn't even occur to me that we wouldn't be able to!

Mr. Customer said...

In! uncoordinated internet nerds IN ACTION!

Dusty Baker said...

It does seem impossible to fathom, doesn't it, J Steve?

Steve Sax said...

I demand Loney Fan's avatar (wife?) has to play on the team

Steve Sax said...

Hey, the truth of the matter is that LFP reached out to us early, at a time where Orel and I were just spent given work and SoSG Fest prep.

I'm game.

Steve K said...

DB, the last time I played softball, drinking at each base was strongly encouraged, if not mandatory.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Okay, let's go over the ground rules. You can't leave first until you chug a beer. Any man scoring has to chug a beer. You have to chug a beer at the top of all odd-numbered innings. Oh, and the fourth inning is the beer inning.

Dusty Baker said...

Exactly, Marla.

There's also beer riding on the results of each game.

Dusty Baker said...

@ J Steve

That's how Wade Boggs played the game.

In in some capacity. I have some recurring ankle and knee issues that I may have to have medically resolved between now and Spring, but either way I'll be around. Put me down for Kegmeister, photographer/historian, the Jeff Pentland role, and any managerial duties that may be necessary (e.g., lineups, recommendations to throw at people's heads).

@MLASC

You can't plan to make it one state over by Spring?

rbnlaw said...

Yes, you can drink in the dugout at Big League Dreams.
Yes, I can really pitch.
Yes, I can hit.
Yes, I can still run.
Yes, I can drink.
Yes, I can talk shit.

I am the consummate 5-tool player (also been called a "tool").

I am in on this bish!

Josh S. said...

What the flipping flip? I just had a comment disappear for the second time in this thread.

@MLASC

You can't make plans to travel one whole state over by Spring?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'll be the team statistician.

I've crunched the numbers: Dusty has a -10 WAR.

Dusty Baker said...

WAR? Huh. Good god.

Josh S. said...

I will be doing some training in the cage to get back into Ron Cey Baseball Camp "Most Improved Player, 1985" shape.

Not sure what to do about my noodle arm and Magoo-esque aim, though.

Dusty Baker said...

I'm in a -10 hole before the first game. Not a pretty picture.

What is my BAR (Beers Above Replacement)?

Dusty Baker said...

Josh S = Chuck Knoblach

Dusty Baker said...

@Josh

Was it most improved because you were starting at zero?

Seriously, do they actually have batting cages for softball pitches?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Dusty - There are softball batting cages. I know Sherman Oaks Castle Park has a couple.

Josh S. said...

@Dusty 12:44

Yes, actually.

Who said anything about a "batting" cage? I train for softball in a shark cage.

Josh S. said...

This discussion caused me to Google the Ron Cey baseball camp. All I found was this nugget from a 1988 L.A. Times article:

Former Dodger third baseman Ron Cey, who was playing for the Chicago Cubs at the time, used his name and money to help start a camp in Northridge in 1985. The camp lasted just one summer. By Cey's admission, it was a failure.

"Because I was playing in Chicago, I couldn't supervise the camp," Cey said. "Most of the problems that occurred weren't under my supervision. Parents were dropping off kids and no one was there to supervise them. . . . It lacked a lot of things."

It's all my fault!

But back in the day...Mom taught me to play baseball, not dad.

Orel, move Mrs. S to maybe please.

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Who's looking into selling the TV rights to the tourney? I hear Fox pays top dollar.

Dusty Baker said...

So Josh didn't get enough supervision at that baseball camp, and that's the reason he turned out the way he did. It's all becoming clearer now.

@FB

Or maybe your mom can sell a whole bunch of cookies on your behalf at her work. She can use company resources - email, bulletin board, etc - to advertise. And she can spend half her day doing so instead of doing her fucking job.

This is my fourth try at posting a comment, the other three kept disappearing. I'm in if you'll have me. I can be our team's MSB

Bryan said...

My comments keep disappearing. Maybe this means I'm being cut from the team but I'm in if you'll have me. I can be our MSB.

M.Brown said...

Just wanted to say thanks to you guys for wanting to play. I think a good time will be had by everyone. Also I'm getting rid of the team entry fee and making it a flat rate of $35 a player. This will make it fair to the teams that only have 12 players and allow us to raise more money for Manny. I just updated that on the LFP. I'm sort of new at this so hang with me as I feel my way through it.

Josh S. said...

If we can get at least 24 people, I wonder if Sax and Orel can each field a team.

My comments do the same thing. I usually have trouble with the mobile version.

I'm in Texas girl with no coordination. However, in true Texas form I can drink. As with Fernie, if you need out of towners I will do my darndest to be there. Plus Kuribe and I are have always said if we ever meet we have to get obliterated.

MeanieBreanie said...

If I could come, would it be considered fair if I were to somehow persuade original flavor Sax to be on the team?

Orel said...

Every team needs a ringer.

Orel said...

And if we could get MB & Karina in one location, we just might have to have an off-season SoSG Fest.

MeanieBreanie said...

Let us know when the dates are announced. With this much notice I could definitely make it out that way. Off-season SoSG Fest would defininitely be in order. It will be a pleasure to meet and drink with such a motley crew (no pun intended).

@Fred, you gotta make the trip. Karina, Myself, Fernie and other out of towners. It will be worth it. I promise Slivovitz shots if you grace us with your presence.

Josh S. said...

If MB and Karina are there, is it still a "SoSG Fest?"

Dusty Baker said...

It's pretty scary when one has to use going to Vegas as a front for hanging out with SoSG employees and readers!
