Post-Game 114 Thread: Sleeping Gibbons Equals No Win

PHILLIES 2, DODGERS 0

Without bat magic from a sleeping Jay Gibbons (who went 0-for-4 to drop his average over 300 points to a miniscule .444), the Dodgers were doomed today, amassing six hits but no runs. Scott Podsednik had three of the team's hits, but we got big 0-fers from Andre Ethier, Casey Blake, and A.J. Ellis. Chad Billingsley gave us a quality start (6.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 Ks), but you can't win if you can't score (at least, that's what Steve Lyons once told me). Karina, don't blame me.

In positive news, however, the combine hit count of 13 means that Josh S. is the proud recipient of a pair of reserved-level tickets to next Wednesday's game. Congratulations, Josh S., and thanks for saving Mr. Customer the pain of having to watch the Dodgers getting shutout up close and personal!

UPDATE 9:26p: By the way, ESPN, WTF is up with calling a 2-0 defeat a "rout"? Maybe in World Cup soccer. In baseball? With two teams who scored 24 runs when they played the night prior? What a bunch of east coast homers.

Padres torched J-Mac for four runs in 4.2 IP, and are up 4-0 over the Pirates in the sixth.

Steve Sax said...

Cubs just scored two off Zito in the top of the sixth to tie it at 3 in San Francisco.

Steve Sax said...

Rockies already beat the Mets so we've dropped back to fourth place, a half-game behind Jim Tracy.

Nostradamus said...

We may perform as poorly as the Mets, but our closer hasn't physically assaulted anyone recently.

4-4 game in Frisco.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Every position player in the Cubs' lineup has a hit.

Paul said...

I still believe in you sleepy Gibby!

NicJ said...

The way things are going im surprised our closer isnt being assaulted.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'm sure there are plenty of fans who wish Broxton was arrested.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

On the bright side, it looks like Kovalchuk is going to the KHL.

In Russia, contract voids you!

I wouldn't want to take on the Ox.

Let sleeping Gibbons lie.

Will Kemp be out of the bisonhouse tomorrow?

Now I sound like Jim Tracy.

Steve Sax said...

Just updated the post with a WTF.

Pirates scored four in the seventh, so it's 7-4 against the Padres going to the bottom of the seventh.

Giants and Cubs now tied at 4 going to the bottom of the eighth.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

DAMN YOU PAT BURRELL

NicJ said...

why wont pat burrell just die already?

Nostradamus said...

Re:WTF

To be fair, they did score infinitely more runs than we did.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Let's face it, two runs felt like a blowout.

NicJ said...

one run felt like a blowout. Two was just trying to show us up.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

All of the comments on the page are about the headline.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I demand a Brian Wilson meltdown.

Nostradamus said...

In an ideal world, Wilson would choke right here.

Steve Sax said...

Micah Hoffpaiur Ks for the first out. He also has a lot of vowels in his name, but no E's.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Come on you Japanese sonuvabitch, take him deep.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Tying run is on the basepaths.

Paul said...

I agree Kemp has to be in the lineup again. His last benching didn't help. This one probably won't but the more he sucks the more likely he will understand that he needs to get ready to step it up in 11.

Steve Sax said...

Kosuke with the infield single; even the WGN announcers are surprised.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Micah was right to swing at those pitches. The ump's going to be giving those to Wilson.

Nostradamus said...

Wait, the Cubbies have a Catcher named Welington Castillo?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Tying run in scoring position. You can do it, Starlin.

Steve Sax said...

Tyler Colvin advances Kosuke to second, but two out now for (Jim) Starlin Castro.

Images of Deathlok run through my mind.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

FUCK back to 5.5 back.

Nostradamus said...

Not the answer we were looking for.

Steve Sax said...

giants win. darn.

Steve Sax said...

pirates have a man at second with two out in the top of the eighth

Paul said...

Go away cubs go.

Nostradamus said...

I hate it when the Jints are happy.

NicJ said...

balls

Steve Sax said...

Pirates score the runner, it's 7-5 with two out and a man on first

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Surly factor: 10

Steve Sax said...

Chase Headley apparently made a great play at third to snag the final out of the top of the eighth.

7-5 SD, going to the bottom of the eighth.

Steve Sax said...

Mr LA SF: on what scale does the surly factor run?

Josh S. said...

The previous high surly factor was 5, but MLASF always runs a bit in the red.

(I personally think the angrier he gets, the funnier he gets. Like a comedy Hulk.)

Josh S. said...

I kinda feel bad for the Padres. (Don't tell Dusty.) They've been rolling all season long and still no one goes to their games.

NicJ said...

Meek is looking pretty, well, meek.

NicJ said...

Yeah i noticed nobody is at the stadium either. At least dodger fans stop showing up AFTER the dodgers start sucking.

Paul said...

My surly factor is in the negative. I thought we might be going streaking but the Dodgers bailed on
me.

It might also be cause I have been dry for a few days.

Steve Sax said...

he missed the tag! he missed the tag!

miguel tejada just crossed with run #8. 8-5, one out, men at the corners.

Steve Sax said...

the pittsburgh radio broadcasters call the game like I'm watching the game on television. which I'm not.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This is as close as I could get to a picture of the Hulk laughing.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I do have a bit of a temper. Like Mel Gibson, only I don't say "sugartits" as often.

Kyle Baker said...

HEY! Josh, I heard that remark about feeling bad for the Pod Rays. You're on time out!

Steve Sax said...

@ Mr LA SF: Does surly factor translate into rage, though? I mean, I know about the holes in the wall, but for me surly sometimes goes straight to drunkenness.

Paul said...

Why do you have an avatar of Johnny Damon?

Steve Sax said...

The other thing I remember is that fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate....leads to suffering.

Kyle Baker said...

Surly :: drunkenness :: surly

Steve Sax said...

wow, the pittsburgh radio team just called the last fly out as poorly as steiner's "home run" calls. so it isn't just charley.

Game over, Padres beat the Pirates (unsurprisingly).

NicJ said...

everyone in the NL West won but us.

Kyle Baker said...

1. Life means surliness.

2. The origin of surliness is lack of offense.

3. The cessation of surliness is attainable.

4. The path to the cessation of surliness is beer.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

It's more like being Surly Duff.

NicJ said...

DB should start his own microbrew and call it "surly ale"

NicJ said...

when the hell did chris snyder get traded to the pirates?

Paul said...

I really can't wait for this season to be over. Unless of course we go on a 10 game winning streak.

Wow I have that same sad feeling when I waste a few dollars on a lottery ticket.

Kyle Baker said...

@Nic

Every beer I drink is surly beer. By nature of my touching it.

Kyle Baker said...

I just want to kill Kill KILL!!!!!!!! Buster Posey.

Paul said...

Kemp shrugs his shoulders when told he is benched today. Torre going to sleep on it regarding his(Kemp's) tomorrow.

I guess everyone is apathetic about this team.

Kyle Baker said...

Biz travel for Sept. coming together. I'm going to be in CHI when Cubbies play Shards and then right after that in DC when Nats play Phiwwies. I'm all up in that shizz.

rbnlaw said...

No beer tonight + ate late + two hours writing a letter to a fucknut insurance adjuster + shut out loss + Gnat and Pod Ray loss =

Surly Factor 5+

I went from -3 to a 5+, and I have a headache still (probably attributed to the lack of beer). But I have a bed to go to, so all is not lost.

rbnlaw said...

^Gnat and Pod Ray wins.
My surly affected my typing.

Kyle Baker said...

Still up trying to work with MDIL's pitching motion (she's trying to learn) and release point. On a school night. With a jug of sauvignon blanc up in my grill. Ain't tryin' to hate.

Steve Sax said...

Dusty, have you been to both parks before?

I love Wrigley.

I've not been to Nats Stadium. Yet.

karina said...

@Steve Sax my darling, I know you tried. Thanks for supporting my proposal.

It's not our fault, it's the Dodgers: wasting a couple of lead off doubles and stranding a zillion of runners in base.

You get surly, I get sad:went straight to bed, no playing with Coper,no drawing, no reading,no SoSG.
