Manny May Be Moving, Says Buster Olney

Buster Olney mentioned that expectations abound that Manny Ramirez will be moved before the Aug 31 waiver deadline:

The expectation around baseball is that outfielder Manny Ramirez will be placed on waivers early this week, according to baseball sources.

The Los Angeles Dodgers could have put Ramirez on waivers on Monday but would not do so, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports. Monday was the first day the Dodgers could have taken that action because it was the first business day after the outfielder came off the disabled list.

But baseball sources say there remains a high probability that unless Ramirez exercises his no-trade clause, he will be with another team by Aug. 31 -- the deadline for postseason roster eligibility.

The structure of Ramirez's contract might make him more attractive to teams interested in the slugger. Any team that made a move for Ramirez would owe him a prorated portion of his $20 million salary. However, about three-quarters of his salary is deferred.

I suppose I'd better take a picture of that Manny Ramirez "This Is My Town" billboard I've seen in the city. It might not be there much longer.

What is a realistic return? Just salary compensation, or could the Dodgers actually get a prospect or two for him?

How long will it be before we have another hitter like that again? In all my years of following the team, I have never watched a Dodger hitter and expected him to get a hit, but with Manny, at the end of 2008, most of 2009 and some of 2010, I did. Everybody else, even when Guererro and Piazza were at their best, I only hoped, wished, they would get a hit. I expected it with Manny. It hurts to know that I may not feel that again for a long, long time

I'm going to go out on a limb and say they don't waive him.

@Josh S.

Once upon a time, every player had to pass through waivers before the deadline. I do not know if this is still the case.

If the end truly is nigh; It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

Which is worse? Worst or blurst?

@Mr. C: Per the August trade rules on MLBTR (emphasis mine): "Teams will often put most of their players on waivers to determine interest, since they don't have to give up every player who's claimed."

That's what I was working from.

Kinda makes me want to bust out the STYX Paradise Theater CD. "The Best of Times."

I think Manny could be turned for a couple of Elies and a Link.

Manny to CWS for Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones.

How. Dare. You.

I'm still having nightmares about Andruw's futility at the plate and Pierre's weak throws from shallow LF. But at least Juan Pierre performed as expected (albeit overpaid) Andruw was an unmitigated disaster like Jason Schmidt.

Seems like the worst thing that could happen would be Colletti waives ManRam and then he uses his no-trade to nix any move. Then we would be stuck with each other until the end of season AND get no prospects or salary dump.

Given the way this season has been, I'm not speculating on the odds on that...

Who's this Manny everyone's talking about?

Mota, clearly

If the Dodgers decide to waive their top free agent talent (I don't really have a problem with it) is there any reason for the fans to spend their hard earned money to go to a game the rest of the year?

Damn Sax,
I love Manny Mota. Who doesn't?
