Ted Lilly finally made his debut for the Dodgers and let's just say that he was legen....wait for it...DARY. Backed up with the same sort of impotent offense he left with the Cubs, Lilly gave up a solo homerun to Miguel Tejada in the first inning and then retired the next twenty batters in a row to take the Dodgers through the seventh inning. The Dodgers, eager to show Lilly their appreciation for his stellar pitching performance, left it to .248 batter Russell Martin to double in two runs to take the lead, before watching Martin slide awkwardly at home, where he was thrown out, and likely injured (Martin left the game early). Hong-Chih Kuo pitches a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Broxton survives a shaky ninth, and even two measly runs hold up for a win. Astounding.
Sure, we beat the Padres, finally. But in a cruel twist of fate, all we did was narrow the Giants' second-place gap to one game. So forgive me while I need some consoling here. It seems that even when we win, we lose. What a paradox! What to do...hey, let's go to the mall! Today!
