Manny Ramirez Reportedly Off To The White Sox

ESPN.com's Tony Jackson is reporting that Manny Ramirez is indeed off to the White Sox, and the White Sox will either pick up all $3.8M remaining on his 2010 salary, or part with a prospect for a bit of cash relief. (On the eve of the McCourt trial's beginning, I can guess which option will be chosen.)

Los Angeles Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez is headed to the Chicago White Sox on Monday in what is looking like a straight waiver claim, a league source with knowledge of the situation said Sunday on condition of anonymity.

The source said there was still some chance the two clubs will work out a trade that presumably would involve one from a list of a handful of prospects going from the White Sox to the Dodgers, a development that probably would mean the Dodgers would pay some percentage of the $3.825 million remaining on Ramirez's two-year, $45 million contract, depending on the quality of the prospect.

Another league source, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the Dodgers' preference at this point is to simply allow Ramirez to go to the White Sox as a waiver claim, in which case the White Sox would be responsible for the entire $3.825 million. The Dodgers have had that option available to them ever since the White Sox secured waiver rights to Ramirez on Friday. [...]

Ramirez didn't start any of his final four games with the Dodgers. He pinch hit in the top of the sixth inning of Sunday's 10-5 loss to the Rockies but was ejected from the game after one pitch when he argued a called strike that appeared to be a few inches off the outside corner. That apparently was his final act in a Dodgers uniform.

Ramirez is batting .311 this season with eight homers and 40 RBIs, but has played in just 66 games due to injuries.

More on this tomorrow. I'm working on some puzzles, to keep my mind off this sad stuff.

Unless this cash they save is buying me an HD scoreboard/dodgervision Ill take the player.

Thanks Manuel! You provided some of the greatest baseball memories for me. First with the Sox and then with the Dodgers.

You are one of the best. Only good vibes from me.

Wait what do you mean Manny doesn't read this site???

^ Co-sign Paul.

2011:

Dodgers need a STUD outfielder, Two top starting pitchers, a middle infielder with some sock, and a catcher.

How much do you think they are willing to spend for these holes?

Off Season will be interesting.

Now I've got these chores
And I'm never going to hurt no one
And when at last
My work is done

I only only want the time
To do one thing that I like
I want to get so stoned
And take a walk out in the light drizzle
At the end of the day
When there's no one watching

It's not going to happen.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We already have the middle infield set, Neeebs. Furcal and Theriot. Besides, where do you find middle infielders with sock? The only ones I know of are Utley and Alex Gonzalez.

NicJ said...

2011 is looking like it could be another 2005.

NicJ said...

id rather keep the mid infield, dump loney and sign Dunn.

NicJ said...

or maybe stick dunn in left and threaten loney to develop power or risk losing your job in 2012

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Theoretically, the infield is set, though I would like to see some upgrades at the corners. The outfield and rotation are huge questions.

Kyle Baker said...

If we trade Piazza, so help me...I'll never watch this team again.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Do the Angels feel like trading Bobby Abreu, or is his leadoff mojo too much to give away?

Kyle Baker said...

I am struggling over the Loney question. I thought he had broken out this season despite my thinking he had plateaued as a player. Now I'm thinking I was correct in the first place.

NicJ said...

there arent too many legit outfielders out there. Crawford but he isnt really a power guy.

If Kemp and Dre would play like they can it would make things easier.

Paul said...

I don't see this organization doing much. They love playing
in the NL West. At least we don't have to play the Yanks and Sox again.

NicJ said...

Loney is pretty much on pace to replicate his last two seasons.

Well not totally, he is striking out more.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

A few 1B one year deals if the Dodgers feel like it. Guys like Glaus, Branyan, Berkman, Konerko, and Derek Lee are free agents.

Jonny Gomes is also a free agent. He has some sock.

NicJ said...

the rotation is a really big issue.

so far we only have Kershaw and Bills signed.

Paul said...

I think Kemp will have a break out year. Then he will break the hell out.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'd be interested to see if Brandon Webb would be able to come back.

But I also was interested to see if Erik Bedard could come back, and so far nothing's happened on that front.

NicJ said...

Gomes was someone that i wanted us to get this year.

Im worried that is power is mainly helped by the park he plays in.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

@MLASF:

Problem is that we have below average power at the corner infield positions. Theriot is servicable if we had better production, but we don't.

I think Nic is correct unless the McCourts really do something shocking (for them/him)

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Jeff Francis would also likely be on the market, and we know how much the media loves him. Even though he did jack this season.

There's still Cliff Lee! Eh? Eh? No? Okay, it was worth a shot.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The thing is that there are no middle infielders who are offensive machines. Most are serviceable leadoff men with some speed.

NicJ said...

Cliff Lee? we are lucky we got Zach Lee!

Paul said...

Lots of questions. God I wish they would sell the team.

Kyle Baker said...

I'll go with Konerko and Lee (and Dunn, mentioned earlier), but Berkman is 136 and can't move, and Glaus hasn't been able to do much but in short bursts for Braves this season, so I consider them both less than Loney (e.g., lose a lot in defense for moderate gain in power).

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

It would be something if they signed Derek and Cliff, then called up Zach, and we'd have three Lees on the team with none of them being Asian.

NicJ said...

Ive been holding on to loneys defense as a reason to keep him for a while. When i checked to see where he ranked in OPS this year i cant keep using that.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Loney's slow decent this second half has certainly not helped the team.

Kyle Baker said...

I hear ya Nic.

On the other hand, to me, 1B is the least of our worries. We need 3 SPs, backup (at least) for aging 3B and SS, a catcher, a LF, and some bullpen help. If we got all that I can still live with JLo.

NicJ said...

well, they will probably start grooming De Jesus next year for SS. i know they use him at 2B a lot in AAA but from what i understand he is more comfortable at SS.

Kyle Baker said...

Look forward to seeing The Jesus in the majors in September to see what he has.

NicJ said...

i think he is just starting to knock the rust off after his leg injury.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I hope DeJesus does get the call this month.

Kyle Baker said...

Still watching Top Chef episodes. I've now seen two of my former bosses on this show this season Panetta and Podesta. It hit me that I've had two bosses whose names begin with "P" and end with "A."

NicJ said...

well he is on the 40 man so i dont see why not.

Plus Carroll has a broken finger. No sense in making him play with it.

Paul said...

Yeah that leg injury was big. He could have stepped up this year if that didn't happen.

coaching staff is in flux. I don't see much from Mattingly.

Kyle Baker said...

Word is that Wide Eyes WANTS to keep playing with that injury. He's a gamer, and I don't mean that in a sarcastic, derogatory, stat-licking kind of way.

Steve Sax said...

I'd watch out for Atilla Pannacotta if I were you.

NicJ said...

yeah i dont doubt he wants to but why risk any further injury for a season that is all but over.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I don't think the team has shown much faith in DeJesus, especially with his leg injury, and I fear they'd go with Juan Castro before him. Which wouldn't make sense if the season really is over. Let the kids play, like DeJesus and Trayvon Robinson.

NicJ said...

if it were up to him we wouldnt play anyone over 25 and im sure that would go well.

NicJ said...

I dont know what to think of Tray. He is a little small for a CF.

I do remember that monster shot he hit on the taiwan trip though.

Kyle Baker said...

I would like to see TrayRob get a sniff next month.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

@DB 10.29

Here here. Except I'd settle for 2SPs.

Paul said...

Who do we play in inter-league next year?

NicJ said...

i wouldnt mind ely having the 5th spot.

NicJ said...

@Paul, its like the twins, chisox, angels and some other team i cant remember.

Paul said...

Oh yeah our bullpen needs some help.

NicJ said...

just showed a replay of the bobbleslam on the news.

I must say, that was the loudest, most exciting moment i have ever seen live at DS.

Kyle Baker said...

Clarification: I said 3 SPs, with the implication of other than Kid K and Bills, but didn't necessarily mean we had to get 3 big time SPs. Or that they had to come from outside the organization. Although I would love to see a legit #1 stud, which would make Kid K and Bills even better by taking some of the pressure off, then another serviceable, inning eating 4, etc.

Steve Sax said...

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that Bill Plaschke wants an ace, too.

Paul said...

I don't see a direction from this team. It has a real identity crisis.

Kyle Baker said...

It's interesting how just a year ago, we had a clear identity and direction. Today, with almost the same team, we arguably have neither.

Paul said...

Manny was suppose to pass the torch to the young guys. They haven't steped up time after time. So now manny is gone the other vets look old and injury prone and no improvement from the youngins.

Kyle Baker said...

Yep, Paul. This was their "step up" year, but they stepped back, alas.

Fuck yeah I'm still up and trying to stave off the inevitable trabajo tomorrow.

NicJ said...

we all have the trial to look forward tomorrow.

AND THE DRAFT!!

Kyle Baker said...

Sax, if you wouldn't mind, I'd like a nice Maker's Mark manhattan, perfect.

Kyle Baker said...

@Nic

I was JUST thinking about a) getting our ass kicked by Phiwwy and b) the draft tomorrow.

NicJ said...

im gonna draft my ass off tomorrow.

Paul said...

Live draft? Is it done here or on the site?

Nostradamus said...

Puzzles or no, I'm having trouble letting go of today. Definitely feels like an end, but it don't seem like a beginning yet.

So Mr. C are you saying it feels like a night with no dawn?

Full circle baby.

Kyle Baker said...

@Paul

On the ESPN site. There will be a chat room enabled there during the draft.

God dammit - tomorrow is today.

Good night everybody. *vin's voice*

Look, I know we're done and all, but it would still be f'n sweet if we could somehow light up Halladay tonight.

Whoever owns this team in the offseason is going to have to spend to have any semblance of a team.

SP
Resign Lilly (2 yrs or 1 with an option) and Padilla (1 yr.)
Ely 5th starter

INF
Loney, Theriot, Furcal stay. I'd like to see Blake assume a bench role and sign a new 3rd baseman. The Adrian Beltre Reunion Tour would be nice. Otherwise, sign a solid backup for Blake,

OUTF
Kemp and Ethier stay. Pods can void his option now, right? Go after Carl Crawford or Gomes.

C
The Russell Martin situation in the offseason will be interesting. I'm good with him starting again if they re-sign Barajas as backup.

BENCH/BULLPEN
I have no idea.

Kyle Baker said...

I hope GAARP is available. He'd be good coming off the bench.

*KK bait*
