Game 133 Thread: August 31 vs. Phillies, 7p

Carlos Monasterios (3-4, 3.54) vs. Kyle Kendrick (8-7, 4.64).

COMMENTS: CARLOS MONASTERIOS IS THE FUTURE OF THIS ORGANIZATION, Mr. LA Sports Fan likes to trumpet, but what is Monasterios' true future with the Dodgers? The club has juggled him between the bullpen and starting rotation all season — more out of necessity than indecision. Yet modern baseball thinking suggests that players, especially young pitchers, thrive in defined roles. Monasterios has done everything asked of him as a rookie; will the Dodgers give him some definition in 2011?

Dusty, did you decide on mr c as your date?

karina said...

This game is winnable

NicJ said...

just hit him in the head please.

Dusty Baker said...

This Is my town: town drunk

NicJ said...

oh fuck, ruiz.

Steve Sax said...

@Karina: agreed! There's this dreadlocked guy who would be perfect in a PH situation...

Oh.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Crap, Ruiz.

NicJ said...

bringing in broxton to pitch to ruiz? REALLY?

Fred's Brim said...

i don't want to watch this

karina said...

Sax, you have to BELIEVE! you know you want them to win this game!

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I'm having a flashback here...

karina said...

@karen thank you very much :)

Paul said...

Ruiz. Drive the dagger deep and twist leaving me no doubt that i should change the channel.

Or strike out so i can laugh at you.

Josh S. said...

Wuh-oh.

Mr. Customer said...

OH: "I can't tell when he's intentionally walking someone."

Dusty Baker said...

@ Sax

Yes Mr C and I up in dis bish.

karina said...

Brox, you can do this. Go Blue!

NicJ said...

I hate Ruiz so much i dont even listen to Panama by Van Halen anymore.

Paul said...

Never seen a middle relief guy have his own intro song.

He he throw strikes bitch.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

OMG WHO SAW THAT COMING OMG

NicJ said...

CHOOOOOOOCH.

karina said...

Of course, in play (runs)

Fred's Brim said...

i am so fucking tired of chooch

Paul said...

He is a bitch!!!!

NicJ said...

so fightins should be here any second, right?

karen said...

I hate Carlos Ruiz

I hate Shane Victorino

Steve Sax said...

I still believe in Jonathan Broxton.

Just not against the Phillies.

karina said...

@NicJ no way, Ruiz is not going to spoil Ruben Blades for me.

booooooooooooo

NicJ said...

why cant their team plane just go into a mountain?

Paul said...

Or the Yankees.

Alex Cora said...

Get Home and get to watch Brox give up 2 runs. Nice fricken welcome home gift. Grrrrrrrr!!!!

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

So how many people are going to say Broxton still can't do it in big games? Or does this not count as a big game?

Paul said...

And sometimes the Padres. Oh and the Giants.

Fred's Brim said...

i said this last year, and I think it still is true: I hate the Phillies more than I hate the Giants. When the Phillies return to sucking in a couple of years I won't care about them, but for now, I hope Dusty and Mr C firebomb the Philly team bus on their way home

Dusty Baker said...

Other than handedness i can barely tell Broxton and Sherrill apart. It's like the last part of Animal Farm.

karina said...

George Orwell doesn't agree, Dusty

Paul said...

Oh yeah Red Sox too.

Paul said...

But he is my man agaisnt the AL All-Star.

Fred's Brim said...

pigs are naturally lefties, it's the dominant gene for them

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I'm so sick of Philadelphia. That team by far is more douchey than the Giants. The Giants haven't put up a semblance of a fight since 2004. They are an afterthought. The Phils, they keep punching us and kicking us in the balls every year now.

Paul said...

I am a lefty.

I like bacon.

Mr. Customer said...

Dusty and I have agreed that George Sherrill shall henchforth be Snowball.

Mr. Customer said...

As in "Snowball's chance in hell we win this game"

NicJ said...

Four runs bad, two runs better.

karina said...

Mr C I don't agree, why does he get to be Snowball :(?

Paul said...

We are gonna need a bigger boat.

Steve Sax said...

@Dusty: did Mr C bring along his snub dodecahedron?

(this is not a sexual innuendo even though it sounds like it could be as such)

karina said...

He should be a minor and almost useless character,Mr C

Dusty Baker said...

Nicely played Nic. Hearty laugh from Loge.

karina said...

Hahahahaha, NicJ

you ARE a bunch of nerds

Mr. Customer said...

@karina

The Animal Farm metaphor doesn't hold up except for the fact that Trotsky also had a funny beard. I just wanted the "snowball's chance" pun.

Dusty Baker said...

If it's not a sexual innuendo I don't want to hear about it, Sax.

Mr. Customer said...

@Sax

Actually, I never took that damn paper globe out of my car, so it is present to witness this embarassment.

karina said...

@Mr C so you're getting all Napoleon on me

Paul said...

So Philly's backup Catcher is only 5 homeruns behind our starting First baseman?

karina said...

@Paul he might, but King James is awesome

karina said...

Mr C, did you build a dodecahedron to solve the puzzle?

Fred's Brim said...

this kid's had enough. gnite everybody

*goes to bed back in the barn*

Mr. Customer said...

@karina

Jeff Kent is Napoleon, without a doubt.

Paul said...

I am sure he is an awesome guy.

NicJ said...

Dylan with the attendance jokes again.

karina said...

Manny is our Mollie

*sniff*

karina said...

I like Eric Stephen' jokes on Twitter tonight. Thing is I don't know if to laugh or to cry:

example: Phillies catchers FTW tonight

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Ken Levine: I have un-friended Manny Ramirez.

Well DUH.

karina said...

Why don't they just bean someone?

NicJ said...

Its crazy how the media just completely turned on manny for minimal reasons.

They never said shit about GA being old and useless.

karina said...

OK Dodgers, let's win this game this inning!

good start: Bison, King, Barba

Steve Sax said...

Giants up 5-2, so we may actually need to drop this game

NicJ said...

im rooting for a loss. officially in screw the giants mode.

Mr. Customer said...

@karina

Yeah, all three of the ├╝bernerds did eventually, I think. (Build the snub dodecahedron, I mean)

Paul said...

Smart ABs Kemp and Loney. Our future is bright.

NicJ said...

i wonder if we can still convert Loney back to a pitcher

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

If anything, they said the opposite about GA. "He's such a heads-up player, he's a veteran, he doesn't make mistakes on the basepaths..."

Well no shit, Sherlock, he doesn't make mistakes on the basepaths because he's never ON the basepaths to begin with.

karina said...

I'd wish I could see your dodecahedrons.

karina said...

It ain't over 'till it's over

Dusty Baker said...

I just want to see some mofos plunked.

karina said...

NicJ who are we converting to play first base?

unless the Dodgers sign Victor Martinez

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Don't we all, Dusty, don't we all.

NicJ said...

Dont know, but seeing how loney was never fully converted to a hitter im sure we can find someone.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Clearly Kenley Jansen's future is at the plate.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Don't blow it, Blowtel.

karina said...

My new word today: mofos

because I decided to stay ignorant of whatever you meant with beaver and moose knuckle earlier

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Heh. Beaver.

karina said...

@NicJ that hurts

he's on a mid-end of the season rough patch, but he can hit

MR. F said...

I am proud of you, Karina.

NicJ said...

Listen, loney is a nice guy but he has pretty much plateaued as a hitter it seems.

his numbers have been the same for three seasons now.

NicJ said...

i will admit that loney's shortcomings become a little more glaring with kemp and dre struggling.

karina said...

@Mr F thank you, why?

Dusty Baker said...

Re Karina's new word for the day

It's like Sesame Street here, except with cuss words.

MR. F said...

For choosing to stay ignorant about such matters!

karina said...

@NicJ if you think about it, he's been the best and most constant hitter of the season and he doesn't have anyone to protect him. He can't make miracles

Dusty Baker said...

Seeing beaver and dodecahedrons on the same day is too much for one person, Karina.

karina said...

@Mr F ignorance is a bliss and I suspect I can live without those alternate meanings.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

It helped when Loney was getting meaningless statistics like batting average and RBIs though.

karina said...

@Dusty Baker I knew dodecahedron, it's a polygon of twelve faces, building and drawing geometry is not that hard.

NicJ said...

@Karina, yes i know, but his lack of power at his position leaves him open to a lot of criticism if he cant keep his average up.

If he was hitting .310-.295 i wouldnt be saying anything.

karina said...

@Mr LASF he won't collect RBIs while no one is on the basepaths.

sigh

karina said...

@NicJ at one moment, his average was on that range.I don't know, I don't watch much Dodgers games, but maybe he's not seeing good pitches.

NicJ said...

plus his walk rate is falling and his K rate is rising.

karina said...

300!

NicJ said...

yeah it was, he has fell of a cliff since the ASB and has big a big part of why the dodgers have gone in the tank since then.

not totally blaming him everyone has gone in the tank.

karina said...

@NicJ it's been a collective effort to find new and incredible ways to underperform

NicJ said...

well you would think since the whole lineup sucks and it is well known he has little power he would see plenty of fastballs.

Pitchers tend to test you if you have no power.

karina said...

go Blue! win this game!

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

It would help if he was getting hits too.

NicJ said...

just to put it in perspective. Helton is having one of the worse offensive years in his career and is only .006 OPS points behind Loney.

karina said...

allright NicJ and Mr LASF, King James sucks.

I'm just try to find positives :(

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Loney's batting .217 this month. That's just not getting it done. I don't care if people aren't getting on base in front of you, you have to perform better than that.

Dusty Baker said...

You sure are feisty tonight Karina. I for one like it.

We're still here to the bitter end. Two more outs. Sigh...

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I'm not trying to say Loney sucks.

...

Well, actually I am, but just for the second half of the season. The first half, he was fine. You have to hold players' feet to the fire, not let them off the hook because of some supposed awesomeness (cough, suck it up and blast Kemp, Moriyama, cough).

Steve Sax said...

at least we're making Lidge throw a lot of pitches each at bat.

yeah, i'm digging for nuggets here.

Steve Sax said...

Gibbons is still batting .375

NicJ said...

im not trying to beat up on you Karina.

The team as a whole is pretty awful this year but there are glaring pieces that need to improve. Dre and Matt have proven they can. Loney hasnt proven a whole lot yet.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

We can still take the series tomorrow! It's not much, but it'll do.

Steve Sax said...

FREE JAMES LONEY

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

FIREWORKS BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD

Sure, there are fireworks off the field, but on the field, I'd compare it more to landmines.

Paul said...

Drive safe boys!!

NicJ said...

look now sax just wants to give loney away for free.

Steve Sax said...

PGT up. Believe me, this one was queued...about ten days ago.

karina said...

I know you don't want to make me feel down.

At least we can pull for a win series tomorrow, like Mr LASF said
