SoSG Stat of the Day: Beers Consumed/Inning (BCI)

This weekend we brought you an overview of some advanced statistics. Today we bring you an overview our own obscure but vital stat: Beers Consumed per Inning (BCI).

Now we're certainly not saying one has to drink to enjoy a game at Dodger Stadium (even when the number-five starter is pitching). If that is not your speed, that is totally cool with us. But if you're one to enjoy a brew or two or five with your baseball, your BCI will act as a guide to how much you may enjoy the game:

BCI enjoyment level
.111 Mellow, but still alert enough to catch a foul ball. Even if it takes some ingenuity.
.222 Relaxed, but with wits still intact.
.333 Guaranteed bathroom break. Better get a Dodger Dog or two to pad the tum.
.444 You're enjoying yourself so much you might even stay the whole game.
.555 You aren't afraid to let Manny know what you think about that dropped ball. And you're sitting in the Top Deck.
.666 This is when fans start to get, uh, real friendly toward each other. Especially when the Giants are in town.
.777 If you're a lightweight, you might end up doing this.
.888 You're planning on running onto the field. Don't do it.
1.000 Really. Just don't.
1.111 Welcome to the major Ligues.

Variables outside of BCI's scope:

  • Tailgating, which we officially can't condone, but hey — at a minimum of $6 inside the stadium for beer, we get it. Since outside bottles or cans aren't allowed inside Dodger Stadium, parking lot booze doesn't count toward your BCI. (Since it's adjusted for park factors, should we call it BCI+?)
  • Wine or liquor from the bar, if you're lucky enough to be on the suite level. Remember, 12 oz. beer = 5 oz. wine = 1.5 oz. hard liquor. Your BCI can be adjusted accordingly.
  • Beer sales ending after the seventh inning. Extra innings? You're on your own.

I'm rarely above the .222 range and that's only when someone else is buying. I like beer as much as the next guy but I'm a cheapskate too.

Ha! That "adjusted for park factors" thing cracks me up.

I don't know how I'd do here. Most of the Dodger games I see are on the road and I avoid drinking amongst the local fauna (Mets and Philly fans in the cheap seats). For games not involving the Dodgers, it's easy to get loaded before the game even starts at Citi Field. Does that count as BP?

@FB

I'd call that a home/road split. You're the James Loney of inebriation.

I'm strictly a .111 guy. My mentality is "This beer cost me 11 goddamn dollars and I am going to savor every last goddamn drop, even if it takes me all game."

Is .222 the Cerveza Line?

At your average weeknight game, .222 is the rule, but I can really pad my stats with an occasional Friday or Saturday night game.

Our goal every time we go to a game is to be at .444 levels before we even enter the stadium. This way you can enjoy a .666 kind of game at a .222 price.

I'm w HLACK. I usually lay down a strong foundation on the patio before heading over to the game, then can just rest on my BCI laurels throughout the game. So, despite the no tail-gating issue, we have to work in a quotient for having a few pops first, wherever that may be (Elyssian Park, Short Stop, my patio, desk drawer at work, etc.)

ps-Love the K-Y Valentine's Day advert in the side column. SoSG readers can either use the product with their significant other(s) or as a way to better endure the predictable bad run of Dodgers team form during the dog days of summer.

This is why God gave us The Shortstop. $2 PBR's before every home game is the best way to get your BP in before the game. Of course, having a DD is advised.

Eating at El Compadre before the game ain't bad either, although the beers are a bit more.

I don't like to spend so much on beer at the park... though maybe it's not a bad idea.

Attending a game it is usually .444 or it depends on who I am with (going to a game with one of my vendors means .111 for the whole game)...at home watching it is close to .888.

On another note, does anyone know why in California they don't have beer vendors walking the aisles like they do in the midwest? At Wrigley we never had to leave our seats.

I always wondered this too, GLG. Not once in my adult life have I ever been able to yell, "Hey, BEER MAN!"

My BCI kind of depends on the IMWT (Is My Wife There?) factor. So it varies from game to game...

Casey-

If your wife is there, does it mean you drink more or less beer?
