Game 92 Thread: July 15 @ Giants, 1.05p

Dodgers start Brett Tomko, RHP (1-7, 6.18) vs. Noah Lowry, LHP (9-6, 3.35).

Dodgers: 51-40 (1st place! NL West! 1.0 GA, W3)
Giants: 38-50 (5th place NL West, 11.5 GB, L3)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: It's a pretty bold move by manager Grady Little handing the ball to Tomko, who is going through probably the worst physical and mental slump of his career. When the season started, Tomko was the fifth starter, but a 1-5 record and a 5.95 ERA in eight starts got him demoted to the bullpen. He's struggled in relief as of late, having been scored upon in his last five appearances.

Giants: The soft-tossing left-hander continues to shine for the Giants, tossing six innings of one-run ball against the Cardinals in his last start. Lowry has allowed just three earned runs in his past three starts and has lowered his ERA to the best it has been since May 27. He has been a much better pitcher at home (2.45) than on the road this season (4.30). Lowry has made two starts against the Dodgers this season, allowing five runs over 13 2/3 innings and posting a 1-1 record. He is 3-1 with a 3.05 ERA in 11 games (nine starts) in his career against the Dodgers.

COMMENTS:

  • Dear Brett: That's a picture of your wife, Julia Schultz (Playmate of the Month, February, 1998). And maybe that's why you're struggling right now. After all, if you get to go home to her, why would you give a Flying F' about what you did at work?
  • And yet we at SoSG won't hold your millions in career earnings and centerfold wife against you. That's your job. (Ba-dum-bam! Thank you, good night! Be sure to tip your waitress!) Just look at Joe Beimel: Reviled after last season, he sobered up, got a tat, and now he's lights out. So hit the tattoo parlor, Mr. Schultz!

UPDATE, 11.23a:

From Inside the Dodgers:

Unfortunately, Chin-hui Tsao had to go back on the DL with a shoulder issue, but D.J. Houlton is here today after arriving late last night from Las Vegas.

Hoping Tomko can get back on track and finish off the sweep and 11 in a row in SF.

One run on four hits in the first inning for the Dodgers. I'm sure Brett Tomko can preserve the lead.

See? See? That's exactly the attitude that Tomko's talking about.

Kent boots a potential DP ball. Tomko thinks, My wife is hot. My wife is hot.

Maybe Tomko needs to see Lurch's sports psychologist.

Until yesterday, Bonds hadn't gone 0-5 since 2001; now he's done it two games in a row.
