Gurnick Sees the Dodgers' Future, And It Does Not Include A Power Bat

Dodger beat writer Ken Gurnick posted his own midseason report on mlb.com, and he ends with a bit of clairvoyance:

Fearless second-half prediction: Colletti again will come up empty in the search for a bat and again will load up on pitching by trading for a starter, returning Chad Billingsley to the bullpen.

I don't know whether to be excited or saddened by this prediction, coming from a prolific writer who is pretty darn close to the organization and should have a good read on the vibe. If this prophecy turns out to be true, I suppose it isn't such a bad thing--look at the play for Greg Maddux last year. And with the rotation beset by injuries, that may not be such a bad thing.

But James Loney, Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier sure as hell better step up. And Nomar Garciaparra, Jeff Kent, and Rafael Furcal better return to their normal productive forms, too.

Considering the crap that's likely to be available (COUGH Mark Hendrickson COUGH Lance Carter COUGH) it's hard to know if this would amount to an improvement.
