Reports are coming in that Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners centerfielder and last night's All-Star Game MVP with his inside-the-park HR and a 3-for-3 performance, is close to signing an extension with the Mariners.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that the terms could be made official on Thursday.Meanwhile, multiple media outlets in Seattle are reporting that Suzuki and the Mariners are on the verge of a five-year contract extension. The Seattle Times says that the deal could be worth almost $100 million.
Hmm, five years, $100M? So around $20M a year? Or in other words, over twice as much as the five-year deal Ned Colletti struck last year to snag our CF, Juan Pierre (5/$45M)?
I don't know, even with the 2x premium, it seems like a pretty close call to me.

Hard to know in finances how much more Ichiro is worth than Pierre. However, on the baseball field, he is at least 5x the player Pierre is. Although equally dangerous on the basepaths, he beats Pierre in every other capacity including average, on base percentage, and defensively it isn't even close.
BUT does he wear a jaunty cap. I think not.
Orel, I would wear the frickin' jaunty cap if we traded Pierre for Ichiro.
Why can't the National League win a Frickin game in the All Star game. The last time I checked we were the SENIOR circuit. I think Barry Bonds is the culprit. His swollen head gets in the way!!
Well now we've got our work cut out for us in the World Series seeing how we cannot win on the road vs the AL.
I will the jaunty cap also for Ichiro.
There you have it, Orel! An anonymous jaunty cap wearer offer!
I'll alert the media! Don't sign that contract just yet, Ichiro!
