Game 88 Thread: July 7 vs. Marlins, 7.10p

Dodgers start Derek "Hard Luck" Lowe, RHP (8-7, 2.98) vs. Sergio Mitre, RHP (2-4, 2.88).

Dodgers: 48-39 (2nd place NL West, 1.0 GB, L3)
Marlins: 41-46 (4th place NL East, 7.0 GB, W2)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Lowe came out of his showdown against John Smoltz on Monday with an unusual no-decision. He allowed only one run with five strikeouts and no walks, but his pitch count was uncharacteristically high and he was lifted after facing two batters in the sixth inning for his shortest start since April 18. Lowe allowed eight hits and came up with enough big pitches to strand five baserunners.

Marlins: Still unable to catch a break, Mitre hasn't won since May 20 at Tampa Bay, a span of seven starts. Of his 14 starts this season, seven have been quality. A lack of run support has plagued Mitre, who lost his last outing, at San Diego on Monday night. He gave up three runs on three hits over six innings in the outing, but exited trailing, 3-0.

From Inside the Dodgers, the lineup:

Furcal, SS
Pierre, CF
Martin, C
Abreu Kent, 2B
Gonzalez, LF
Loney, 1B
Nomar, 3B
Ethier, RF
Lowe, P

ANGELS rule this town. DODGERS ARE THE LITTLE MEEK SISTERS. THEY ARE LOSERS AND WILL ALWAYS BE. THEY ARE A LAUGHING STOCK. THEY CANNOT EVEN BEAT THE TEAMS THAT ARE BELOW THEM. HA HA!!

Time to play ball!

Orel said...

Nice snag by Loney. Tall boy.

Orel said...

The Marlins may be hurting, Vin, but they seem to do okay against the Dodgers.

Orel said...

Okay. See. James Loney cannot be stopped.

Orel said...

That was a perfect throw by Martin to nail Ramirez stealing. Nice—we need Lowe to go deep in this game.

Orel said...

Are you kidding? A car with a "heartbeat sensor" to detect lurkers?

Orel said...

Aflac trivia question: Last year Hanley Ramirez became the third shortstop ever named NL Rookie of the Year. Who are the other 2?

Orel said...

That Miguel Cabrera, he's not bad. 1-0 Marlins.

Orel said...

Lowe getting tagged around. 3-0 Marlins.

Orel said...

Derek Lowe like Clay Aiken: not fooling anyone.

Orel said...

trivia answer: Alvin Dark, Rafael Furcal

Sorry I'm late. Believe it or not, a daughter-in-law of Steve Garvey is at the game right now (with a Son's tickets). She is sporting our FREE JAMES LONEY shirt just for kicks. You can't miss her.

Steve Sax said...

Kent with a nice hit wide of Ramirez, who belly flopped to no avail. Ha, ha!

Orel said...

You haven't missed at thing.

Steve Sax said...

Men at first and second, one out, and heeeeere's Nomar!

Orel said...

Donnelly showing restraint....

Steve Sax said...

Why is it that Angels fans must shout to hear them?

Must be the one world championship, rather than six.

Nomar swings at the first pitch and gets a hit, but Donnelly holds Kent at third...wise move.

Orel said...

Lenny Kravitz is the Marlins' pitching coach?

Steve Sax said...

C'mon, James. We're wearing your shirt tonight and everything.

Orel said...

Loney hackin'!

Steve Sax said...

0-2 on Loney with no time to spare. I have a bad feeling this is a GIDP...

Orel said...

LONNNNEEEYYYY

Orel said...

okay that was a little embarrassing with Gonzo

Steve Sax said...

Base hit! And Gonzo is only out by about TEN MILES

Orel said...

5' 10" is on "the small side"?

Orel said...

Gonzo should have crushed him.

Steve Sax said...

STOP RICH DONNELLY. This is our new campaign. He is AWWWWWFUL

Steve Sax said...

Tonight, we research how many Dodgers have been thrown out at home all year. My bet is that we lead the league.

Orel said...

Jesus, scoring runs for the Dodgers is like getting blood from a stone.

Steve Sax said...

"...about as easy as you'll ever see a man thrown out at home"

Even Vin hates Donnelly.

Orel said...

squeeeeeze

Orel said...

All-Star break can't come fast enough.

Steve Sax said...

hey, at least he's out of the inning, vin...

Orel said...

Lowe's @97 pitches...and still batting. This is how sad our bullpen is.

Steve Sax said...

I will say this: great job to send Pierre on that one. Man on second with two out.

Orel said...

That stolen base made very little sense. Glad he didn't get caught.

Steve Sax said...

Hey anonymous 2, if the Angels want to waste their time talking on this blog, it's their call. We'll remove it later anyway.

They are legitimately in first place and doing well now. And I'm supportive.

But come on. If one thinks they are a legitimate franchise, all i have to say is: rally. monkey.

Orel said...

A 9-pitch 6th inning for Lowe. How is his arm not falling off?

Eric Karros said...

Hi folks, just got in. MLB.com Gameday up and running (I've given up on Gamecast.)

Orel said...

Brett Tomko is the new Rudy Seanez.

Orel said...

Loney!

Eric Karros said...

I wonder if anon2 is same guy as anon1 upset his first comment didn't cause a firestorm. That would be crazy-clever.

Orel said...

ouch Gonzo

Orel said...

Wow, how did Pierre not gun him down at the plate?

Orel said...

(that was sarcastic, by the way)

Orel said...

Lowe is running on fumes. Get him out of there. Beimel's rested.

Eric Karros said...

I feel something bad brewing

Orel said...

Nice relay!

Orel said...

Let's move Furcal to CF.

Orel said...

This is death.

Orel said...

Keystone Kops in the outfield!

Orel said...

Why do we drop all these series to sub-.500 teams? It's embarrassing.

Steve Sax said...

How is a man named Sergio kicking our butt tonight?

Steve Sax said...

Two on, two out, bottom seven. What do you want to bet we get nothing to show for it?

This lineup suckssssss

Orel said...

I will not take that bet.

Orel said...

Wrong am I! Look out Marlins, we're going to single you to death!

Steve Sax said...

Hey, Donnelly didn't hold Pierre from second off of Kent's single. Unbelievable.

Tying run at the plate for the Dodgers, down 5-2 in the seventh. Here comes Gonzo.

Orel said...

We are getting totally outplayed tonight.

Steve Sax said...

PATHETIC. Gonzo grounds out.

We cannot win off of cheap-ass singles alone. Get me some power!!!

Orel said...

By a team with a fraction of our payroll.

Orel said...

The police often question him, just because they find him interesting.

Steve Sax said...

Wow, Loney was sweet with that grab and lob

Steve Sax said...

Finally! Biologists rejoice, it's the End O' Mitre!

Maybe now we can get something going... nope, Furcal grounds out.

Steve Sax said...

All we need is for Wilson to hit a three-run jack.

With one on, of course.

Steve Sax said...

Wait a minute, is that Armando Benitez? We've got a chance!!!

Steve Sax said...

Kemp walks. Two on, two out. And up comes Loney. If there is ever a time for Loney to be freed, it is now.

Steve Sax said...

Sorry, that is not Loney at the plate. It's Furcal.

Steve Sax said...

Two on, two out, bottom eight, 3-2 count to Furcal...

Steve Sax said...

Furcal is swinging at everything. Three straight fouls. He looks late on every one.

Steve Sax said...

And Furcal flies out weakly. Awful.

Steve Sax said...

This is over. Houlton's first pitch goes yard.

The Dodgers limp into the All-Star break a disaster. Pitching sucks, Grady can't manage.

Anonymous said...

Who is pitching on sunday?

Steve Sax said...

Lurch is on the mound for us. Here comes a five-game losing streak entering the all-star break...
