Padres Driving In on 40-Year-Old "Coup"

Ken Rosenthal/FOXSports.com: Padres nearing agreement with Maddux:

The deal, which would be a significant blow to the Dodgers, the Padres' NL West rival, will be for either one or two years, or possibly one year with a club option.

Given that the Dodgers weren't going hard after Maddux, wouldn't this signing also be a "significant blow" to everyone else in the NL West? The upside is that it will allow the Dodgers to pay more attention to signing Jason Schmidt.

Looks like it's close to done; Ken Rosenthal reports:

Four-time Cy Young winner Greg Maddux is on the verge of signing a one-year, $10 million contract with the Padres with a $6 million player option for 2008, FOXSports.com has learned.

The option contains escalators that can increase the value of the second year to a maximum of $10 million if Maddux pitches 200 innings next season.
