Without even spending $51.1M in posting money, Ned Colletti has reportedly offered Jason Schmidt a three-year, $47M deal, according to ESPN. For those of you scoring at home, that pencils out to $15.7M/year, which would make Jason the highest-priced Dodger (over Rafael Furcal).
Schmidt, 33, would bolster a starting rotation headed by Derek Lowe and Brad Penny, but also including Chad Billingsley, Hong-Chih Kuo, Randy Wolf, and floaters Brett Tomko and Mark Hendrickson, among others. One has got to believe that an arm or two may be expendable if the Schmidt deal locks and we still are searching for that elusive power bat.
UPDATE (11:07a PST): MLB.com confirms the closeness of the Schmidt deal here. Ken Gurnick also makes the point to say how we're taking Schmidt away from the Giants; but similar to how Maddux was for the Dodgers, you've gotta think the Giants knew Schmidt was already gone.

Well, if Vincent Padilla is now an $11MM/yr pitcher for the Rangers, then +/- $15MM/yr for Schmitty looks like a bargain to me. A rotation of Schmidt, Lowe, Penny, Billingley, and Kuo looks pretty tasty.
