More on that shifty Boras from Steve Henson at the L.A. Times:
Gagne said during the season he would give the Dodgers a hometown discount to re-sign, but like Drew's assertion that he wouldn't opt out of his contract, those words ring somewhat hollow. Gagne's agent, Scott Boras, turned down a guaranteed one-year, $4-million Dodgers offer with incentives that could have increased the value to $10 million, a source close to the negotiations said.
Yeah, because that $19 million the Dodgers paid him for a total of nine saves over the past two years doesn't merit any kind of hometown discount. Bah, I spit on your potential $10 million offer!
Seriously, I think both Drew and Gagne had the best of intentions when making those hollow promises. Then Boras verbally bitch-slapped them and reminded them, possibly at gunpoint, how much they were worth.

Heard an interesting comment from Steve Phillips, exiled-Mets-GM-turned-ESPN-"analyst", on the drive in today. Phillips basically described the Zito chase by saying "[one] doesn't sign up Scott Boras as [one's] agent to go to the best market--one signs up with Boras to get the biggest deal." As evidence, he cited Carlos Beltran, who went to New York despite the fact most people thought it was a bad move for him, since it meant the most money. One can assume Zito bailed on his agent and chose Boras for the same reason.
So, for Gagne to snub the Dodgers' generous offer just means that Boras again has his hand up Eric so he can move Gagne's lips. I think this is bad for both the Dodgers and for Gagne, but then, I don't have Boras as my agent.
How the heck do you ring "somewhat hollow," anyway? Isn't it a binary function? Or is the bell (or whatever it is that is ringing) half-full?
I don't think Drew and Gagne are hollow men. They're too full of it to be hollow. ;)
