I would say the "The" of the Netherlands may be dropped in that case.
"The Netherlands vs Spain" is a bit weird and unwieldy as an adjective. "Let the rivalry between the Netherlands and Spain commence" is probably more grammatically appropriate.
I voted Spain for hotness, but Princess Maxima has a much cooler name. She sounds like she should be teamed up with He-Man.
Can we just refer to them as Holland and take the easy, if not technically correct, way out?
They shouldn't have a name like 'The Netherlands' anyway. Having a 'The' should be reserved for cool or ironic band name.
Hear that The DeLino?
Unless used in a formal context specifically addressing the country itself as a whole, one should really drop the "The", as in United States of America.
Now, the Gambia, that one just drives me nuts. it's not even plural!
holy smokes, this poll is surprisingly close so far (8 for Dutch, 11 for Spanish)
I think wardrobe selection may be hurting the Dutch a bit.
Spain for me.
It's "The Netherlands" because - well, because that's what it is. Are. Always has/have been. (Holland is just a province of it, or rather two provinces, I think, North and South, or High and Low.) It should be called what it wants to be called.
As far as i know, the country that hates its former "The" and wants it abolished is (the) Ukraine.
