Vicente Padilla (3-2, 4.72) vs. Carlos Silva (9-2, 2.96 ERA)
COMMENTS: From the Dodgers:
Team USA forward Landon Donovan, who recently returned from representing the United States at the World Cup in South Africa, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Soccer matches can end in a tie. Except when they can't. Baseball games can't end in a tie. But baseball series can. But only regular-season series. And so we have the Dodgers and Cubs battling it out for a Dodgers series victory or an unsatisfying series split. Meanwhile, Rafael Furcal joins Andre Ethier and Jonathan Broxton in representing the Dodgers in this week's All-Star Game — but before they take off down the 5, Padilla will need their help. How about an All-Star tuneup, boys?
(Update from Sax) Just like the Kuo and Furcal news, Sax is a late add to today's game; but unlike those two Dodgers, Sax will be up in the nosebleed section along with hordes of kids (literally). Come by if you want to see the folly of a man desperately trying to teach baseball to a mass of under-five kids who are more interested in cotton candy and will meltdown by the fifth inning.

Ely optioned to ABQ. Link recalled. I take no joy in having called it.
Furcal 6
Kemp 8
Ethier 9
Loney 3
Blake 5
Paul 7
Martin 2
DeWitt 4
Padilla 1
I never thought I'd say this, but I don't know why DeWitt is starting instead of MSB Ackbar.
It's a trap!
Who is that girl in the GT picture?
"the folly of a man desperately trying to teach baseball to a mass of under-five kids who are more interested in cotton candy and will meltdown by the fifth inning."
This is like Scioscia during last night's game.
@Sax
I thought the same thing when I read the line-up...No MSB?:(
Thank you SoSG for the nod to the ladies in the GT!
It's official. The Lakers' point guard has left the team to seek a role elsewhere.
Good luck with Charlotte, Jordan Farmar.
The Baseball Tonight set looks out of place on the field at the Ravine.
Nomaaaaahhh never looks out of place at our Yard. *Thumps heart*
Could be the worst Jon Miller outfit I've ever seen.
Jon Miller just said that the Cubs have beat the Dodgers their last two games at Dodger Stadium. Let's hope that he's not psychic.
*turns to teleprompter*
"Well, Jon..."
EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK.
I just don't know if I can take a whole game of Joe Morgan. I may need medication.
I noted the same thing, Brother Neeebs. That was about 13 seconds into the broadcast. I guess he only had about 12 seconds worth of material and research for this game.
Start throwing at people, VPad!!!
Oh, sorry, just getting warmed up.
Epale, everyone!
Karen, our wishes came true :)
@Dusty He is not a girl...or do you want more disturbing pics?
MIller: "The Rockies have won six in a row."
Not counting the one they lost today.
@Karen
Dr. Dusty prescribes gin.
Epale Karina!
So Carlos Silva, you can go back to 2009 form, just for tonight.
VPad can get his 100th win as MLB pitcher.
Great start for Battletoad.
MOTHER EFFING ALL-STAR!
That's our ALL STAR!!
That ball was OBLITERATED.
On the sofa in our newly re-arranged living room, Vinny!
King JAMES!
FJL POWER!!
GOOOOOOOOOOONE!!!!! FJL
JESUS LONEY!!!!
Holy hell he killed it.
Steve Lyons thinks Loney killed the rally.
He's my heart's first base all star!
He hit the FUCK out of that ball.
Any more room on that All-Star roster?
^Not in terms of distance but in terms of just coming around on it and hitting it in the sweet spot.
X Man keeps it going! Liking this. Why oh why couldn't we do this when I was at the game yesterday?
Karina's Son just looks so BAD in his ABs most of the time. Swinging for the fences at every pitch. Not batting smartly. Shameful for a catcher.
"It's not really even nighttime..." - Miller
Who knew! This whole time zone thing is still strange to some. #FlatEarther
I totally forgot about Nady still playing baseball.
[I waited to publish this comment until I knew he was out in order to avoid a possible jinx.]
Please talk another 12 minuts about the injury Ethier had a month and a half ago, Joe Morgan.
@Karina
Landon is a little schoolgirl and longtime lil whiny pansy. To wit:

Who ordered the '09 Silva?
I did, Mr. C. I heard it pairs well with this Manchego I'm having.
I did, Mr C
SAFE!!!!!!!!!
YER OUTTA HERE!!!
SAFE! it's safe!
Ump just sent the '09 Silva back.
He was out but it was pretty damn close in real time...hard for an ump to see.
I'LL TAKE IT.
YAY for us
@Dusty not a good pose, but at least he doesn't paint his toenails black.
We can share it, Karina.
I can live with going into the break on a blowout.
Put this out of reach, Beard.
Carlos Silva, meet Milton Bradley.
@Jason
Meet Carlos Zambrano, too.
Nomah's hanging out with Charley on the radio. They're not talking about the game much, but it's keeping Monday quiet.
All right, we've talked about poor Silva enough now
To tell the truth, Silva is through a physical problem.
I'll take that run, too
@Karen
Are you feeling sorry for the opposition? It sounds dangerously close...
Dusty, we can share
@Dusty Baker what's so wrong about feeling sorry?
@Dusty
The "poor" was supposed to be dripping with sarcasm
@Karina
I have a '98 Kerry Wood I've been saving for a special occasion. I'll put it on ice (like his arm!).
@Karina
There's no feeling sorry in baseball. ;-)
Excellent work for ESPN to pipe in Dodgers PA announcer, who is paying tribute to Bob Sheppard by announcing batters in Sheppard's style.
@ Dusty
But did you see Donovan's no angle, over the goalie, under crossbar goal? A thing of beauty.
@Neeebs
Did you see how he turned tail a couple of seasons ago after "playing" in the Bundesliga and did so because it was too physical?
And how he was licking that drinking fountain?
You cannot keep Raffy off base!
Sarcasm noted, Karen.
Sarcasm approved, Karen.
Fuku, dome!
Alright, Battletoad! Lovin' this...so far.
Missing Vinny, though.
@Mr C @Dusty Baker are you twins? or great minds think alike?
I want 15 runs.
Hey let's talk about Ethier's pinky another 17 minutes, Joe!
@Karina
Mr. C and I are secret lovers, in fact.
So, I just found out Monday was being quiet because he has the night off. Ha!
I WANT 15, BEARD!
Why couldn't it be Steiner with the day off?
Sweet sassy molassy, is there any kind of focus group where we can tell ESPN that no one gives a shit about shadows?
Clearly the ESPN research team does not read this blog.
I ALSO WANT FIFTEEN.
So, let me repeat the order: 30 RUNS in all.
RANCHO I WANT 30 RUNS!
Come on, Russ...I'm pulling for you on this AB.
Miller: "This is a double play ball."
I thought you weren't allowed to assume a DP.
@dusty from 6:19
The snark that dare not speak it's name.
How do you isolate from jinxes?
I hate Andruw Jones, even when he 's doing fine with the White Sox
My dog Frankie's chew toy octopus has correctly picked #dodgers to beat the Cubs tonight. http://yfrog.com/6wagzj
@Dusty - Can we refer to you prognosticating canine toy as Froctopus from now on?
bye-bye no-no
Damn.
Nice ovation, though.
That takes care of that question, Karina; )
@Karina
Felix Felicis?
Here comes a 32 minute derisive rant by Morgan re Manny.
HAHA, i Love Padilla.
Honey on the Bat Phone.
Looks like Battletoad is gassed.
only at 88 pitches, but it was kinda hot today.
nice catch by Dewitt
Nice snag, Joyce!
I like how Kid K has started wearing his hat at a jaunty angle lately.
Great outing by padilla. 7 strong innings AND hit drilled Byrd.
That's two Byrd drillings in two days. Hitting one Byrd with two stones?
*high fives Dusty Baker*
Nice Half Blood Prince reference!
Remember its use is illegal in sporting events. exams and elections ;)
@Dusty Baker octopus is blue!
@Karina
Yep, that's why Mrs Dusty got that octopus - b/c it's blue. We get Dodgers-appropriate dog toys.
I just got outbid for Silva on my fantasy team. The first good thing to happen to my sorry team all year.
re: Half Blood Prince
But those are all the fun places to cheat, Karina!
That inning was...not so good.
Ha! Miller made a joke about that stupid All-Star game promo. Best thing he's ever said.
JLo! Whether he was on the bag or not, what a great snag. His fielding is just tremendous.
LA getting all the calls tonight.It's about time.
@Dusty Baker I didn't make those rules! but if muggles don't notice, I wouldn't say a word ;)
Mrs Dusty rocks
Joyce receives payback for the Byrd plunking.
He should have thrown at GAARP!
Already home...great game!
Joe "Complete games are for losers like Cliff Lee" Torre.
Garret Anderson is the out the Dodgers give away to other teams.
@Karina
Yes. Yes she does. True Blue through and through.
Mrs Dusty's dad first started following Dodgers when he moved to this country in the early 1960s and he used to go watch Koufax pitch every night he took the mound. Her mom refined her English via listening to Vinny on the radio.
It runs deep in their family. :-)
Masterful insight from DSBG tweet:
"Great game outta Padilla!"
Ball game!
Now we make all-star break party!
To wit:
"Wow! We whipped they asses!" -Mrs Dusty after that last out. I love it when she drops into the street vernacular.
I make party with wood fired oven pizza and vino rojo! #AvantiCafe
A shutout is the right way to finish the first half. Go Dodgers!
The vuvuzelas have now gone silent. And I for one like it.
@DB 6.06
No.
@DB 3:50p (sorry this is late, but I got no reception in the top deck): HA!
No reception from the top deck? That blows my theory...
Cheers, Sax.
My reception yesterday from Loge 1st base side was worst reception I've ever gotten there. I actually got some little "o" thing instead of the usual symbol that says what type of network I'm connected to. I swear I have never seen this symbol before. I'd rather get nothing than this taunting little lowercase o.
that was awesome
Padilla opened and closed the first half, but this one was a lot better than the opener. With all of the injuries and question marks, we are just 2 back. Clayton will be our second-half opening day starter and Manny will be back. I really hope we can put it all together and get on a roll. I am thinking we go 45-29 the rest of the way
The reception at dodger stadium isnt bad, the signal just drops out when the place fills up and the network gets over run..
Never fails no matter where i sit, BP through about the 2nd inning signal is fine and it drops out after that till about the 9th.
Need to get dodger stadium to put up its own cell towers.
@ Nic
Hate to disagree with you, and you certainly may be on to something. But on the flip side I was there really early yesterday and couldn't get shit. There were probably only 100 people when I arrived.
Either way DS should sort that shit out for the 21st century.
It looks like you guys kept the place relatively clean without me this weekend. 3 out of 4 from the cubs and two more all stars.
I just read the plaschke dodger stadium shit.
I didn't think it was possible to dislike him even more.
Like Dusty, I am just beaming with Blue Pride.

I somehow missed the news that Heath Bell made the All-Star team, replacing Yovani Gallardo. I hate the guy, but he does deserve a spot. I bet he'll care about preserving home field THIS year.
Remember that crazy rumor at the trade deadline last year involving Bell to the Dodgers?
I was having a root canal and was refreshing the phone as much as possible because the year befor I missed out on the Manny news.
I don't know if anything that crazy will come about this year. Anyways I hate Bell almost as much as Sir Idiot Wilson up north.
Are you willing to get another root canal if it means we end with a Mannyesque trade, Paul? Take one for the team!
I had a thought about GAARP after the game:
With all of the baseball world focused on Anaheim, wouldn't this be the PERFECT time for one of the greatest Angels of all time to announce his retirement? He could be recognized in front of the crowd in what was his home park for so long. It would be a really great baseball moment! (No sarcasm, even though I do want him off the team.)
On Friday night, I tuned into DodgerTalk as I drifted off to sleep. THe audio was screwed up, and I would swear I heard side talk on the mic about a possible GAARP press conference (which of course I assumed would be a retirement announcement). They fixed the audio, I went to sleep, and I never heard anything else about it after that (obviously). Mrs. Dusty later confirmed that she heard the same thing as she drifted off.
Now Josh seems to have had some thoughts along the same lines.
It can't be far off.
I would get a root canal for a GAARP retirement.
It's been awhile since i really looked at LeBron. He's got a big fucking fat head and looks like he's 56 years old. Seriously, does he have Greg Oden disease? I hope you fail Fail FAIL asshole Heat.
Watching ESPN Sportscenter piece on LeBron. He said he never talked to Cavs front office and told them of his decision personally. He said on that day he just wanted it to be about him. Oh, it was, LeBron. It was.
#ArrogantSelfCenteredFucker
Looking closer at Battletoad's blue (BLUE!!) glove, the logo on the wristband makes me think he got it at Albertsons. I think I can see that plastic pricetag loop still on it
