Announcing SoSG Fest 2010!

It's our fourth year of this fine blog, and we Sons have decided it's time to shatter the fourth wall. So, here we go...

Other Dodger blogs have done this sort of event thing before, inviting their readers to all sit together in a big block at a Dodgers game, which is very cool. But we Sons figured that a more appropriate event for our particular readership community would be to have us congregate at a bar to watch a Dodger game together on television. (Instead of dealing with the logistical mayhem of pre-game ticket distributions, we'll be able to focus our energies on enjoying drinking with some of you. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.)

We are proud to announce the first-ever Sons of Steve Garvey event, which we have named "SoSG FEST 2010". We're hoping to bring some of our most loyal and vocal readers together on the afternoon of Saturday, July 31, 2010, at a secret location in Los Angeles.

Drinks will be served. Appetizers will be consumed. Prizes may be awarded. And the Dodgers @ Giants game (televised on Fox) will be shown on television. We are really appreciative and grateful of our readers, so we want to subsidize a portion of this event. All we ask is that you bring a healthy liver, a little bit of cash, and a snarky attitude, and come watch the game with some of the Sons.

Here's how this is going to work: If you are interested in attending this event, send us an email with your SoSG screen name and a brief paragraph on why you think you should be invited. We unfortunately do not have space for everyone at this event, but we also hope that this isn't the last SoSG Fest--so don't be dismayed if you don't make the cut on this one, as we're hoping to have more of these in the future.

Entries will be judged by a subset of the Sons, who will make their capricious and arbritrary decisions based on the quality of their entry email, the quality and quantity of the entrants' comments on this site to date, and potentially other criteria that they will decide on the fly. Bribery might be seen favorably by the judges, but is not necessary. All decisions are final. "Winners" (and I do use that term liberally) will be emailed with separate instructions on the event location and time.

(We could also use some help with the logo treatment, btw. I can't even figure out how to change the shadow color from that awful orange. If anyone can design a better one for us, we'd appreciate it.)

Mark your calendars--and good luck!

Sweet. I'm hoping to slide in on strength of comments, but I'll have my essay in by later today.

Yeah, something has to be done about that orange.

Hmm, interesting take, Greg. Didn't mean for it to sound arrogant. We thought people would be more excited to meet and hang out with other readers (which already has happened at some home games).

I guess if subsidized food and grog While hanging out with people you "talk" with every game isn't your thing, then that's cool too. Maybe SoSG Fest isn't for everyone.

I'm JEALOUS. This is not fair. I feel like crying.

What I'm supposed to do if you'll are drinking and snarking in the same place? on a Dodgers-Giants game?

What if the game is not broadcasted? Gameday and a deserted GT is not good enough :(

Kyle Baker said...

Color me interested! Just don't color me the same color as that logo.

I think I'll cancel a meeting so I can get to writing. Won't even have to widen the margins and use the words "very" a lot on this one.

karina said...

Can I suggest a list of candidates? can I support anyone?

Kyle Baker said...

@Karina

Smartphones w browsing capability! One can post from anywhere. I'm in the bathroom getting ready for work right now, in fact.

karina said...

@Dusty Baker I know about smartphones! but I bet you're going to use your best snark on real life interaction (or are you going to say it and then write it in on the GT?)

Kyle Baker said...

@ Karina

Josh had a hilarious comment one time when we were at a game, and it has stuck with me. He said (re himself): "I'm funnier when I type."

Steve Sax said...

Note to self: wash hands after using Dusty's phone

Steve Sax said...

Karina, can you come up for the event? We'll buy all your drinks...

Kyle Baker said...

@Sax

You never Smartphone from your bathroom? Come on, admit it! It's such a peaceful way to check email traffic first thing in the morning, or to see if there were any overnight SoSG posts you may have missed.

And yes, this is the way I start each day.

MMMmmmm....Sausage Feeeessst.

I'm heading to the OC Fair that day for a concert, but I'm trying to devise a way to make the SoSG Fest happen as well. The hampster in my head is running extra hard this morning.

Kyle Baker said...

Just reading the fine print here...."All we ask is that you bring a healthy liver"

This may be an insurmountable barrier for many frequent readers in this space. Unless you mean obtain someone else's healthy liver, and bring it in an ice chest.

Loney Fan said...

@Quad - I am also heading to the OC Fair for a concert that evening. I guess growing up in Southern California at the same time would have something to do with our mutual appreciation for this particular band. But I am not concerned with missing this event. I hate to say I am "too good" for a non-paid personal appearance, but...

Steve Sax said...

@DB 8:09a: fair point on the liver. Edited!

Greetings from the land of Saint Anthony, where the weather is steamy and the wimmin ain't.

Chauvinistic comments aside, I am most interested, but will be hard pressed to put something in writing that may be worthy (I'm not above groveling, Greg). We're supposed to go to Texas Pride for lunch and then to the caverns for our last day in the Land of Shiner (that tour is very cool). I do promise that if I am invited, and an attend, I will wear my Shiner 101 shirt. Makes me 100% cooler.

As for the fest, No Dusty, no peace.

I can't make it. I have to have a...procedure on the 30th. Believe me, I'd go if I could.

Greg Zakwin said...

I'll be honest. The orange is pretty sweet.

Oh, the agonizing decision. My mom is coming to Seattle from L.A. that weekend (which also happens to be her birthday). I'm not sure if I could quite justify heading in the opposite direction:

"Sorry mom, I have to go watch a baseball game on TV and get drunk. But here's the keys to my place, enjoy the Space Needle and whatnot."

Fred's Brim said...

I am JEALOUS too. I have been working on a trip out to there but July 31 is a little quick

Kyle Baker said...

@Jason

Maybe this is a good time for us to move in on your mom.

Jason said...

@Dusty - For all you know, Neeebs and I may be brothers from the same mother.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Great. The one time I'm going to be geographically closer to Karina than SOSG and you guys schedule a Smackdown. Alas, I'll be in Riviera Maya on that day. Schucks.

@Greg Finley:
Try reading the post one more time, reallllllly slowwwwwly. There is a bit of tongue in cheek to the post. It's not a popularity contest. The boys want to be entertained with some witty "applications." That's all. No arrogance intended, I'm certain.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

@Jason:

First Cigarcow, now Dusty. What's with the obsession of Mom Neeebs?

MeanieBreanie said...

It would be great to meet you all, share the camaraderie, and knock back a few. That is if I'm worthy of the invitation. Unfortunately I will be on the opposite side of the coast.

MeanieBreanie said...

I meant to add that the snarky comments alone would make the trip worthwhile.

MR.F said...

I probably won't be in SoCal at the time so I doubt I'd be able to go anyway. I'm pretty sure I'd be immediately disqualified anyway since I'd probably start my email by saying "I don't drink very much alcohol..."

Josh S. said...

Man, the list of cool peeps unable to make it keeps growing.

(Truth be told, we might be in San Diego that weekend, but most likely not.)

Kyle Baker said...

@Josh

I have your passport. You can't leave LA County.

Josh S. said...

Joke's on you. I don't HAVE a passport.

(I don't travel much.)

Kyle Baker said...

That's weird...I have one that has your name and picture on it. I know it's legit - I got it over in MacArthur Park.

karina said...

@Steve Sax July 31st, 2010 is very early for me.I'm impressed for the offer of free drinks for me.Is a limited time offer or we can do that...on a later appointment?

karina said...

@Neeebs hmmmmm, are you going to visit your friend in Maracaibo, by any chance? if so, I'm up to show you around and cook a couple of meals for your family.

Steve Sax said...

@karina, you clearly merit a raincheck. done!

Steve K said...

I'm looking forward to the hour long special where you announce who's going!

Neeebs (The Original) said...

@Karina

Actually we will be in Cancun. Fairly close to you, across the Sea. My Maricaibo friend is coming out to LA in October. He told me that its not a good time to visit him right now. I'll definitely let you know when we do come out.

Steve Sax said...

@J Steve: nice. Rest assured it's not Cleveland or Miami

Nostradamus said...

My essay will be submitted just as soon as I can get out of this damned meeting and get it notarized.

Steve Sax said...

To those of you who have already submitted, you already have me cracking up.

I think there's a game or puzzle or something in here, so could I please ask you to keep the content of your essays to yourselves for now...

Steve Sax said...

(i.e., don't share the approach you used on a comment thread)

Kyle Baker said...

Answer sent!

karina said...

@Sax you spoil me too much! thanks!

karina said...

@Neeebs it's a pity. But you should visit whenever you have the chance, this is a beautiful country!

Steve Sax said...

Any logo help? Anyone?!

Keven C said...

A little late to this party, but just wanted to put in my two cents...

I don't think the Sons should be subsidizing anything. You "subsidize" our days by cranking out this great site.

Now, I can't attend this SoSG Fest and probably don't post enough here to merit an invite, but if someone who is going cares to take up a collection, I'd gladly contribute toward the further destruction of the Sons' livers.

Nostradamus said...

I hesitantly volunteer for logo duty.

rbnlaw said...

And alas, I have checked my calendar, no chance for rbn and Mrs (have to have a DD). We'll be in San Diego for rbnlaw IV's soccer tourney.

Bummin for shore.
