SoSG Lakers Contest, Round One Results

According to the ESPN play-by-play of the second quarter of the Lakers' 102-89 Game 1 2010 NBA Finals victory, Derek Fisher took the last shot from the field, but Pau Gasol took the Lakers' last shot of the half (from the free throw line). Yes, there was some ambiguity here, but luckily I'm saved because no one picked Fisher anyway (whew!).

So, as the picks indicated yesterday, Quadsevens and Mr. LA SportsFan advance to the next round. They will vie head-to-head for this coveted Lakers t-shirt.

I've got to think of more clear rules for this next round, which will take place during Game 2 on June 6 (I hope that's 2010). Any ideas, o brilliant SOSG readers?

How about picking the player (from either team) who has the most dramatic but unsuccessful flop in Game 2

Who will be the first player to audibly curse and be picked up by the floor mic.

First to get a technical.

I like when the rules are somewhat arbitrary...makes it more interesting to spectate. And brings out the obsessive competitiveness in MLASF, which is also fun to watch!

Guess the number of times we are forced to see a promo for the movie Grown Ups. After the first game, I'm already sick of those guys.

How about how many holes MLASF will punch in his walls?

Number of Meg Whitman ads we'll see?

[Whitman ads] - [Poizner ads] * [Fiorina ads] / [Campbell ads]

(get it?)

I understood the rules to mean shots taken from the field, which is why I picked Fisher.

If I had thought it also included free throws, I probably would have picked Gasol.

Plus I don't have a color printer. And I totally forgot yesterday was the Laker game. And I'm totally clueless regarding pop culture.

Kyle Baker said...

Heh - did that feel good to get off your chest, EK?

QuadSevens said...

Since there's no right answer to Sax's equation, does that mean that he keeps the shirt for himself? (Dividing by 0.)

Kyle Baker said...

Yep, Campbell is dark thus null.

Sax forgot to factor in amount of times phrase "just another liberal Sacramento politician" is uttered by any of these candidates.

Booo. Every failure to answer a puzzle or win any other contest only strengthens my (what will be) decade-long resolve to win that monkey.

Kyle Baker said...

In the Smonkstakes, the beauty is that Mr F's strong desire to win the prize will always be tempered by the fact that his ability to do so is completely controlled by any and everyone else who is taking part in the contest.

MR.F said...

(cries)

Kyle Baker said...

The correlation between Mr F's last comment and his avatar just crack me up.

A stipulation for winning Smonk should have to be that Smonk's picture becomes the permanent avatar of the eventual winner, assuming there is one within our lifetimes.

ENG captain Rio Ferdinand out of World Cup. Looking pretty shaky at defence going into the big tournament.

I'm just sayin'

We could start another contest to guess the over/under of the # of comments it takes to win Smonk.

Eric Karros said...

Orel - thought of that, but don't like it because the bettors can actually impact on what they're betting on (similar to why baseball players shouldn't bet on games they're involved in...)

Josh S. said...

Have them guess the number of different celebs that get closeups during the game. (Not in the background of other shots.) Each celeb would only count once (i.e. multiple closeups of Jack, etc.).

Closest without going over wins.

Josh S. said...

Oops. I meant to say 2nd half, not the whole game.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

So what's Round Two?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I say guess the number of times Jeff Van Gundy goes off on an unrelated tangent.

MR.F said...

Mark Jackson Bingo is always fun.

what about picking the first laker to get scolded by phil jackson.

LLCoolL said...

The number of seconds into the game before Gundy calls Gasol the best big man in the league again?

Paul said...

Guess who will be the post game interview.

Will Kershaw have more pitches thrown than Lakers points.

Over/Under on how many bedazzled lakers jackets/shirts we see on TV.

My name has 10 letters in it. Mr. LA SportsFan has 13 letters in it. If the Lakers final score is an even number, I win. If their final score is an odd number, he wins.

QuadSevens said...

One of us will be rooting for a 3 pointer near the end of the game.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Quad's proposal is the most practical, but the least fun.

I say that Quad and MLASF each shoot free throws at half time. Best of 5 with OT if there is a tie.

Now SOSG use your influence to make it happen.

Kyle Baker said...

Couldn't the two of them just wrestle in jello to determine the winner?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We each draft three players (minus Kobe). Whichever combination of three players has the most points wins.

QuadSevens said...

True, practical isn't fun. MLASF's suggestion is good. But what if we make it more interesting. Instead of combined player points, we use shooting percentage instead? Then a bench player who comes in and takes 3 shots could be a factor.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I like that proposal Q7.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

It also removes any unfair advantage someone would gain by having Kobe (case in point: Kobe was 10-for-22 last night, good for 45.5%, while RonRon was 5-for-10).

QuadSevens said...

Something tells me the Sons will come up with something off the wall for us to do. Which will also make the game more fun to watch.

Paul said...

Oops I guess the game isn't tonight so it would be whoever starts for the Dodgers pitch count unless it is Monster.

You two crazy kids have it figured out anyways.

I still say put the shirt on the monkey. Double or nothing.

Steve Sax said...

Thanks guys...I'm going to be out this weekend so I've already got a post ready with the rules. It's not as arcane as I would like, but at least it will keep us all interested all game long.

I just hope both of you guys have tutus (just kidding).

spank said...

Fuck it. just give me the shirt.

Kyle Baker said...

We have a winner! Give Spanky the shirt.

Steve Sax said...

Spanky, shouldn't you be going for the Monkey?

QuadSevens said...

I recently found out that "tutus" is someone's password here at work. Ha!

spank said...

I've got a monkey saxy. spanked it so much it was like a job. I also rescind my request for the shirt realizing the it's not my size. it would probably strangle my neck. keep your mind outta the gutter
