World Cup: England vs. US, June 12, 11:30a

After all this hype, I don't know how we could NOT have a GameThread on this game. I don't mean to disrupt our other World Cup GameThread, but this seems like it merits its own post.

The ESPN Game Predictor gives us only a 17% chance of winning, with England at 54% (and a draw 29%). So the odds are stacked against us. Time for us to do something revolutionary, I suppose.

Write the future, boys.

We just need Pele to do a bicycle kick!

Isn't the match at 1030? Or is that the pre-game show?

Steve Sax said...

I had 230p ET in my books, from ESPN and the NYT...

must be the pre-game festivities, my onscreen guide says 1030 pacific and I recall the commercial earlier saying 130P EST

If the game is a tie, I'll be satisfied. So there's a 46% chance the US will fulfill my expectations. That's not terrible odds.

I'm sure I'm not the only one bitter about the BP incident! Take it to the Brits! We'll pay them back for filling our neighboring body of water with oil by.... beating them at soccer.

FIFA says 11:30. Pregame it is.

Hot chicks of the world cup right now on Univision

karina said...

Hey, I've decided I'm gonna root for the USA in this World Cup, as long they don't play against the azurri.

Go USA! :)

Nostradamus said...

@Karina

I don't believe they can meet earlier than the semis, so I doubt you're in much danger of having a conflict of interest.

karina said...

Did anyone notice when the US team arrived someone yelled "c-mon guys" followed by "vamos, vamos, vamos"

spank said...

I can't hear anything but them horns

Nostradamus said...

Fast anthem...

berkowit28 said...

Here we go.

I'm supporting England, by the way. I used to live there.

Both anthems were fast. Saving time, maybe. Or they don't know them.

karina said...

That was too easy, defense was too childish and slow

Josh S. said...

That was quick.

Nostradamus said...

Wow, speaking of conflicts of interest.

berkowit28 said...

Goal!

spank said...

alrighty then. down 1-0 already

Nostradamus said...

Decent ball movement for the US.

karina said...

@Mr C 11:09 exactly my point :)

berkowit28 said...

Actually, though I live in the US (Santa Barbara), I'm Canadian. So no conflict of interest. I don't think we'll see Canada in the World Cup any time soon.

karina said...

@berkowitz same here, I don't think I'll see Venezuela in a World Cup before 2016

karina said...

Gerrard is annoying me big time

Nostradamus said...

Stevie is everywhere.

berkowit28 said...

Close.

spank said...

both teams missed good opportunities

Josh S. said...

Owww. Shit.

karina said...

goooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal!

spank said...

wow!

Nostradamus said...

Is that an eephus goal?

berkowit28 said...

Jeez.

Josh S. said...

Passed ball?

karina said...

My friend on Twitter: i wrote down a tie in the pool because I knew USA have 12 players.

karina said...

@Josh S LOL!

karina said...

@Josh you should tweet that

karina said...

@FerAlvarezESPN (from ESPN latino) unearned run, USA scores for goalkeeper's mistake

Josh S. said...

Karina, search "passed ball" on Twitter and you'll see I was not alone in that thinking.

Nostradamus said...

Tough chance.

spank said...

that was a horrible kick. right at howard

karina said...

@Mr C hey, keep your hopes high. didn't you win your independence over England? a soccer game should be a piece of cake!

Nostradamus said...

@Karina

I'll be happy when it's over and I can support my county and my LFC lads independently, regardless of the result.

karina said...

@Mr C I'm gonna tell you a very personal opinion about the US soccer team, they've been improving year after year and I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years, the US soccer team could be one of the most powerful teams in the world.

I don't know what they're doing, maybe (i don't know again) college soccer is very good, maybe the Federation is just doing a great job.

An example is the US women team, those ladies really know how to play high level soccer.

berkowit28 said...

He should have made that one.

And that one.

Nostradamus said...

Really pressing now.

karina said...

whatever the score, Tim Howard deserves all the praise he can get.

Nostradamus said...

@Karina

I think it's mostly public awareness and the fact that they've proven they can be competitive in the top leagues (for top money)

Nostradamus said...

@karina

If the score holds, he's clearly the man of the match.

Greg Hao said...

looks like this will go down as a draw. Good on you USA.

Greg Hao said...

Frankly, the USA goal should've been scored as an own goal on Robert Green rather than Clint Dempsey. Still, looks like the USA defense was good enough to carry the day.

Nostradamus said...

Lucky result, to be sure, but it counts.

karina said...

They had a great game, after this game, we can be sure the USA is on the next 16

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

USA! USA! USA! All the way baby!

Neeebs (The Original) said...

I missed this game, but I saw the Argentina game earlier. Wow, Los Puertanos really know how to control and pass. Such a difference from yesterday's game. And the Nigerian goalie was awesome.

rbnlaw said...

Tim Howard man of the match. Probably in the top 5 of all GK's in the tournament.

Good on the US. Good luck to the Trip Lions rest of the way. With that defense, they're going to need it. Old Man Carragher looked rather pitiful.

Steve Sax said...

Hey, a draw is still pretty good...way to go USA!

karina said...

@greg.hao I don't know if I've watched too much calcio over the years but I think if the defense works fine, there's a lot you can get away with.
