Scoreboard Watching: NL West Games of Interest (June 10)

The second-place Padres may have been idle yesterday (ppd-rain), but their 4-2 victory over the Mets this morning slots them a scant half game back of the Dodgers for the NL West lead, going into tonight's game. In a battle of the H-less Jons, former Dodger Jon Garland (6-3, 2.68) duels Jon Niese (2-2, 4.28); first pitch 4p PT. (Go ahead and watch a couple of innings before Game 4 of the NBA finals tips off; we'll have a separate GT for that.)

The Giants already lost to the Reds this morning, with former Dodger Guillermo Mota taking the loss after giving up three runs in the eighth inning, turning a 6-4 SF lead into a 7-6 Cincinnati loss. Giants fall 3.5 GB the Dodgers. Oh, and the Giants lost starter Todd Wellemeyer to a leg injury after he tried to beat out a double play. Wellemeyer left the game with a 4-0 lead in the third but did not get the win; he has not recorded a win on the road since May 2009.

Rockies lost 5-4 to the Astros. Diamondbacks lost 11-7 to the Braves.

ATL opening can of whoop-ass in the 5th.

I always liked that Mota guy.

HLACK's fantasy spot starter Jhoulys Chacin gives up the QS in the 6th, makes him sad. Cory Hart's HR makes up for it.

Nuts to the Fathers, that's what I say. I'd like nothing more than to see those miserable Muts take down A-Gon and the island of misfit players.

Rox lose!

Bud Black and Bruce Bochy chosen as coaches for the All Star Game. Closest they will ever get to managing the game itself.

Fred's Brim said...

oof - the Rox lost 3 of 4 in that series to the Stros at home

Fred's Brim said...

and they have Toronto coming in next - I wonder how many homers they will hit in Denver

In my e-mail box:

"As a Boys in Blue member, you will have an exclusive opportunity to purchase individual tickets to see the Dodgers battle the World Champion Yankees!"

I effing KNEW IT!

@Josh S: That's the funniest thing I've seen all day.

Four months of incessant promotion, and the games still aren't sold out...

Mets have things cooking in the second against Garland. Frenchie bloops one in between 3 fielders and one run scores

Fred's Brim said...

Sweet jesus the Muts just hit into a 5-4-3 triple play

Fred's Brim said...

who are these jokers playing for SD? Denorfio? Zawadski? They sound like the second string defense for Notre Dame

interesting stuff from Keith Hernandez: He was asked about what players do between day-night doubleheaders. He said he didn't play in them (they were just regular double headers when he played). But between doubleheaders, he said one thing he wouldn't do was read. He didn't like to focus his eyes on something close and then have to go back out and focus on the ball coming from 60 feet away.

Between these games today, he took a nap

Neise works around a leadoff double, still 1-0 Mess

Josh S. said...

@Sax: And they would have been sold out, had they just put them on sale like regular games.

Fred's Brim said...

Podrays trying to set up another triple play situation: walk the pitcher, Reyes bunt causes an error that puts runners on 2nd and 3rd

Fred's Brim said...

Wright drives in a run with a groundout, Mets up 2-0

Fred's Brim said...

Ike Davis with an RBI single scoring Reyes, 3-0 Mets. Garland pitching like Garland. He'll probably end up going 7 innings and giving up 4 runs

Fred's Brim said...

Jon Niese is cruising along, 1 hit thru 6, Mets still up 3-0

Steve Sax said...

Braves over D-Backs 11-7, I'll change the post.

Right now it's Mets 3, Padres 0, Mets have a man on with two out in the bottom of the sixth

Steve Sax said...

bases loaded with two out in the sixth, and Ruben Tejada grounds to third to end the threat for the Mets, who strand all three.

3-0 Mets after six.

Fred's Brim said...

Niese through seven, just one over the minimum, 15 Padres in a row retired

Fred's Brim said...

yikes - Padres walk Neise for the second time tonight. Walking the opposing pitcher makes me cringe, even when some other team does it

Fred's Brim said...

the Halladay-Johnson battle in Philly has a good one. 1-0 Phish in the 8th

Fred's Brim said...

Keith Hernandez on the Padres uniforms (they are wearing the blue alternates tonight): "I've never liked that Padre uniform. Look at that, that is a stinker."

Gary: "Well did you like the old one, the mustard and mud?"

Keith: "I liked it better than this one."

Steve Sax said...

3-0 Mets through seven

Fred's Brim said...

Neise on cruise control, now through 8, just 1 hit allowed

Fred's Brim said...

Neise back out for the 9th looking to complete the 1-hit shutout

Steve Sax said...

3-0 going to the ninth.

Lance Zawadzki grounds to Jose Reyes for out #1.

Steve Sax said...

Niese is only at 103 pitches.

San Diego's hitters are brought to their Niese.

Steve Sax said...

Pop foul to Delino's man-crush, Ike Davis, for out #2

Fred's Brim said...

Niece finishes the deal, 3-0 Mets, Padres with only 1 hit. Dodgers back up by a game!

Fred's Brim said...

Padres hitters hit like my Niese

Fred's Brim said...

and I dont even have a niece

Steve Sax said...

hairston Jr pops out! CG SO for Niese on 108 pitches.

Mets 3, Padres 0--Padres fall back to a full game behind the Dodgers!

Now I can watch the Laker game...

Fred's Brim said...

strange - Mets are coming into the clubhouse and as they walk in, they hand their hats to a guy who puts them into a suitcase kind of thing. What could that be for?
