Since early May, we have watched Matt Kemp spiral down from his otherworldly start this year toward a decidedly mortal coil. His OBP has gone from .405 on April 22 to .315 today; his batting average has sunk from .333 to .258, and his home run last night in a losing cause was his first in 17 games (giving him 12 total on the year). And yes, he had the Dodgers' only run of the night; yes, he's got prodigious power and tons of potential; yes, he's dating Rihanna.
But getting picked off second base, in the ninth inning, representing the game-tying run with one out (and a man on first), is simply inexcusable. And then, after Russell Martin walked to put men and first and second with two out, Jamey Carroll hits a single to right which would have rightfully scored Reed Johnson from second--except for the fact that Russell Martin--0-for-3 and batting .250--inexplicably turned wide on second base and was tagged out before Johnson could cross the plate. With the tying run INCHES away from home, Martin absolutely blew it. Just as Kemp had blown it minutes earlier.
We've now lost five of five games to the Angels, we slip to four games behind the Padres in a TIE for third place, and the season looks hopeless once again as we are absolutely pathetic when the game is on the line. I know we've got a young team, and that young teams are prone to errors. But Joe Torre sure as hell had better be making the team run windsprints and suicides all night long, until they're puking up rally monkeys, after this performance.
Me, I'm just getting drunk.

Torre on the postgame has came the closest to calling out a player since he has been here.
Something along the lines of baseball being not just about ability but about being able to think. He also said that the all knew about fuentes pick off move.

I caught that too, Nic. I'm glad Torre said that. I continue to believe deep down that when Ned C said that publicly re Kemp earlier in the year, he wasn't entirely off base.
Twilight Zone ninth inning. But hey, Ely looked good. I blame Rhianna. And Martin hasn't recovered from his promising start a couple years ago.
Perhaps Top Chef will ease my pain.

I have had a few glasses of that Pillar Box Red or whatever it is called ( the bottle is way over on the liquor credenza and I aint getting up). I remember you were quaffing some of this last year and liked it. Om kinda ok with it. There were two kinds, one being more of a "reserve". I opted for the regular. Do u remember which one u had?

I drank the regular, since I'm a man of the people. Tonight I'm swilling from the bottle of a Renwood 2007 Zin from Lodi. It's okay, but I'm trying to anesthetize the pain of this game, which will probably take Oban 14 + COD:MW2 later on.

Of all my faults, my memory is not one of them. Mrs Dusty finds quibble with what I choose to remember, and she may have a point. I might not remember what I ate for breakfast but I can remember what wine you were drinking sometime last season. Go fig.
Yeah that's a good point - if this were $8-9 I would say it's a good Wednesday night wine to go with cheap homemade spaghetti. At $12 it's a waste.
