James McDonald (1-1, 7.11) vs. Josh Geer (0-0, 4.91).
COMMENTS:
- Welcome home, Dodgers, says Eric Stephen of True Blue LA. Just check your speaker volume before exploring Eric's post.
- A win tonight would "almost certainly" give the Dodgers their first perfect April at home, writes Jon "I know Alyssa" Weisman at Dodger Thoughts.
- Who is Josh Geer? Just another rookie pitcher...the Dodgers haven't seen before. Uh-oh. (I know it's not Geer's first major league start, but still.)
- Scott Elbert has been optioned to Double-A Chattanooga, presumably to make room for Cory Wade, writes Tony Jackson.
- Going to tomorrow's game? Ready your Elvis costume: The theme of the post-game fireworks show is "Vegas Night" (this guy can wear the same outfit!).
UPDATE:
More roster moves, via Dodger Thoughts:
The Dodgers purchased the contract of Jeff Weaver and activated Cory Wade, while optioning Blake DeWitt to the minors. Doug Mientkiewicz was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

I still don't understand the Martin hitting so high thing.
Let's hope Martin can break out of his slump so we can start saying "I don't understand why Martin is batting so low in the lineup."
True dat Q7.
Martin and Loney still haven't hit a HR. Let's see if they can get that monkey off their backs during this homestand. It might just settle Martin's swing down too.
Torre needs to bat Martin 8th. At least so he can get his confidence back. Then insert him higher in the line-up. Kemp should not be hitting after Martin.
Kemp should be hitting 4 or 5, based on the lefty/righty match up. That said, Martin shouldn't be batting 8th. He should be batting first or second. He is bound to stop looking at so many strikes.
BTW, anyone know why Elbert was sent to Chattanooga as opposed to ABQ?
I don't think the Dodgers want to send their pitching prospects to hitter friendly ABQ. They'd just rather they be in AA.
Alireza - No, Martin shouldn't be batting 8th. Blake should be. But right now Martin is stinking it up and definitely shouldn't be batting 6th. I am not sure what Torre is thinking, but batting Martin that high in the line-up is killing the offense. Like I said, bat Martin 8th, he'll get a lot of walks, but he'll also get that confidence back.
Elbert to Chatanooga to amke room for Cory Wade.
Pardon me boys but I think that Elbert has a train to catch.
I'm off to Dodger Stadium. Go Blue!
i like the big boy lineup
Picking up on Q7's question, who do you think will hit a home run first, Loney or Martin?
I'm betting on Loney.
I'd have to vote for Loney to hit a bomb first too. Martin just hasn't looked good at the plate yet.
did money hit a HR in spring training?
Loney. Stupid iPhone autotype
James is so money and he doesn't even know it!
we need our Tri-Lambs to break out of their slump!
I should have Kim Ng, and Charles Rawitch help me put liquid heat in the Padres uniforms.
and Dejon Watson
the iphone sure thinks he is.
Oh boy, Celtics and Bulls headed to 2OT.
im so used to road games this year i was trying to figure out how we got two out in the bottom of the first so fast
either got that ball because he shaved, more aerodynamic.
its sucks that the celtics series is probably the best playoff series ive seen in like five years.
Little League Scorboard.
Red Sox-6 Rays-5
this one ended on a diving catch on an infield bloop with runners in scoring position.
im only 24 but im sure i have some grey hair after that game.
damn, is it going to be one of those nights again?
This amazing Extra Innings package means that I can't start watching the Dodgers' game until the Nationals bat in the bottom of the ninth, down five runs. It's quite exciting.
Nice, Nic Torre!
Bulls up 3 with 2:00 left.
that could of been runs right there.
did someone just chant beat LA?
There we go!
look at that hustle by manny, sorry boston.
are the bulls that good or are the celtics that bad?
shake it off j mac.
hey finally the bulls stop a last minute shot by ray allen. he stepped on the line so its only a two.
it seems like james gets rattled easily.
J-Mac is all over the place
take it easy mac.
get it?
Celtics tie it!
seriously i hate ray allen.
Holy Cow! 25-foot 3-pointer from Ray Allen ties the game at 118
wow what a way to end a 2 OT
Triple OT in Chicago! The seventh OT period in four games!
hundley is still up what the hell?
3OT for Boston/Chicago
nooooo, just leave him in. he has got to get through this.
McDonald may be young, but boy is he gutless.
Weaver up in the pen.
NOOOOO NOT WEAVER!!!!
10-pitch at-bat ends in a walk. Run scores, McDonald's got nothing.
Luis Rodriguez has a home run.KIng James and Martin don't.Strange, isn't it?
what's the record for most OT rounds in a playoff series?
weaver is a pitcher that will give you enough good outings just to keep a job.
Trade a run for the 3-6-1 DP. 2-1 Pads.
whenever you say king james i think of lebron.
We are getting murdered by our pitchers being pretty much non competitive. I will take Weaver so long as he throws a couple strikes.
leave him. please.
Dammit, Geer helps himself. 3-1 Pads.
weaver is terrible.
alright maybe take him out.
poor guy.
Bulls by 1 w/3:10 left.
I get a telemarketer, leave, come back, and the Pods have two on the board. C'mon.
Is LeBron James called King?
Umm nic...this is the 5th? start that McDonald has been awful. And he really is not getting hit hard. He is giving away games with walks. If it is a mechanical problem or not, I think he needs a trip to AAA.
Vin's lip-reading! O-Dog telling McD, "You're the man!"
Here comes Weaver.
I don't care about McDonalds' confidence. he needs to be pulled out as soon as possible.
pedro martinez?
did anyone watch weaver in the spring? he was terrible.
McDonald falls apart faster than Shea Staduim when a screw is loosened.
yeah Lebron has been called King James for like 4 years now.
Weaver is really going to get us a few grey hairs.
McDonald is being lifted in the second inning? Oh boy.
Tied in Chicago.
Did he throw strikes? Do you realize how much harder rallies are to come by when walks are not issued?
pedro martinez is too expensive. I really dont think he has a season worth of starts in his arm.
What will last longer: Bulls/Celtics game or this inning?
I wonder if McD goes to the bullpen or to Albuquerque.
Well, Andrew, he's not throwing strikes thus far. And I'm pretty sure Nic, along with the rest of us, understands that walks are no good.
Weaver walks Eckstein. Kinda says it all.
who is out there we need someone, i think it has been established now
Weaver's got nothing either.
anybody else in that pen?
I don't know then, it looks like a staff issue. Perhaps Honeycutt needs to go.
It was most likely an "unintentional" intentional walk to Eckstein to get to Gerut.
Saved by a good center fielder.
Bison on his horse!
i told you weaver is terrible.
Like I said.
i dont think u get rid of honey, you just cant count on two 20 year olds in your starting rotation
Noah with the steal and breakaway dunk. Unbelievable.
pierce fouls out!
Bulls up 3, 35.5 seconds left.
Well my issue is that people like Stults even are getting killed by falling behind in counts. And from watching these games, they seem to be missing in all the same spots signaling that its a mechanical problem not being taken care of. If that isn't Honeycutt's problem, then I dont know what is.
What the crap is going on here? Could James not see the plate? was he pitching a different sized ball?
100!
Aw, you snuck in there, Erin!
Believe me, Orel, I was refreshing like a crazy person to make sure I got it tonight.
Glad to see the offense put up a fight.
are any small market teams with good pitchers out of contention yet?
no?
just checking.
Nic j, i don't really follow basketball with the exception of bits i get from watching Sportscenter. However, in my heart James Loney is King James.
haha alright Karina, ill take note of that.
king james it is.
jesus.
The warning track's going to get a lot of face-time tonight.
It's dreadful a rookie pitcher with a 4+ era is dominating Dodgers bats.
at least they didnt bring eric milton up.
Weaver's gettin outs, but not the kind of outs you want to see
Wow, Hinrich just missed a layup. Bulls up by one but Celtics have the ball with 16.7 left.
Pedro is in the small market of San Pedro de Macoris. I believe the parking lot kitty is starting to fill up for a free agent signing.
Loney should have had that ball.
are the bulls going to blow this?
Rose rejects Rondo!
seriously, this bulls game is insane.
what a game
Perfect ending in Chicago. Bulls win!
wow.
i still hate the celtics.
Bulls and Celtics will kill each other.
pedro is just trying to wait out until a team panics and gives him what he wants.
ned coletti may have thought his job was over after manny, but he needs to get to work, like now
alright everyone, we need some trade ideas.
Guess the Lakers are playing the Rockets next.
hey we can always count on jason schmidt!
nice catch by the douchebag.
Man, I don't know if a bigger tool could have caught that foul behind the plate.
I don't know any pitchers in contract years other than John Lackey. But if the Angels continue to play like they are now, he could be an option.
well put nic
Hey, a good pitch by Weaver!
does ben sheets count as an available pitcher?
thanks.
eh, sheets is great when he is healthy, but is rarely healthy.
Sheets is way too rusty to count on.
kinda like schmidt.
Weaver was effective in his time as a spot starter with St. Louis. I mean seriously, this is the first Dodger team in memory where all we need our pitching to be is merely serviceable and to not give away games. McDonald now has 20 BBs in less than 18 innings. Perhaps he will come through for us later in the year, but clearly he needs to work it out else where for now.
plus i think he is already in line to sign with texas once he is healthy, they are paying for his post surgery rehab.
ya thats the last thing we need, well besides a young kid that cant find the strike zone anyway
very true Nic
Weaver almost says get that junk outta here!
come on, we need some offense tonight.
Boy Weaver went deep
Furcal doubles. Here we go.
why didnt the dodgers go after garland?
O DOG
When you throw junk like that to pitchers you're gonna give up hits.
the o dog loves LA
O-Dog ties it up!
YES!!!!!!
They did, but Arizona showed more interest
opposite field
come on manny one more home run.
{queue Zombie Nation}
The O-Dog comes through!
Some have wondered about Garland.
if he keeps it like that, LA will love O-dogg back.
Back-2-back Jacks!
i called it!!
wow
repeat
BACK TO BACK!!!!!
count it!
"And a towering drive! Forget it boys—that's out of state!"
"Manny Ramirez made a baseball look like a golf ball against the night sky." —Vin
Ethier swung at that first pitch like he wanted to make it three in a row.
Geer up for a win, LA
ugh, I have the taste of bad pun in my mouth
Either Scully or the graphics guys have the count wrong. I think it's Scully.
man, i love o dog but letting him hit in front of manny in a one year contract is going to get him a nice deal next year.
maybe the dodgers are just trying to get there type A draft pick back.
this guy is throwing junk way to take advantage boys
This is good. We're making lots of contact.
that;s the offense i was waiting for!
OK Jeff - can you throw strikes this inning?
Geer can't survive with a mid-80's fastball to Manny.
heh heh Vin said "toasted mini buns"
MLASF: Don't be ashamed, SoSG comments are where bad puns come to die.
Nic: O-Dog's still gotta be able to hit the home runs.
I'm getting sick of that Chase commercial
no wind up for weaver?
What would it take to trade for Halladay?
A losing record for Toronto
Jeff didnt want to run all the way to first
more than we got orel
Aflac: Manny Ramirez is 21st alltime with 1,064 career extra-base hits. Who holds the record?
Lou Gehrig?
I think the Dodgers should actually consider John Lackey if he comes back healthy.
do u think we could pry peavy away from the fathers
who else is out there?
I mean, the Dodgers could get it done, but the cost (i.e., Kershaw) would just create another hole in the rotation.
Halladay would look very good on Dodger blue, but they'll have to give half of the prospects, one of our very talented young players, money and maybe an arm and an eye.
not unless we want to trade matt kemp. and a pitching prospect.
that's a strike, blue
Lackey: I'm a fan. But the Angels will probably get a deal done.
Peavy: Don't see it happening. The trading-within-the-division tax would be prohibitive.
Orel- Considering Ole Frankie doesn't like paying the contracts of these players...perhaps the Left field pavillion could get Halladay.
the angels are more likely to get peavy. its hard to get trades within your division without giving up a lot.
You said it, Karina.
Wow, another good pitch by Weaver. Pitching with a lead is nice.
Laredo!
Don't be too certain. Mid-season trades usually favor the team that buys, not sells.
what is claudio vargas's deal will he be healthy to pitch this year?
true, but there are other teams that want peavy.
Peavy's an interesting case since he's not in a contract year.
