Game 13 Thread: April 19 vs. Rockies, 1p

James McDonald (0-1, 13.50) vs. Ubaldo Jimenez (1-1, 2.53).

COMMENTS:

  • Seven straight, baby!
  • James McDonald, take two.
  • Cory Wade has been placed on the DL with shoulder issues. The Dodgers called up Scott Elbert to replace Wade on the roster.
  • It's been a history-making homestand: First Orlando Hudson joined Wes Parker, then yesterday Manny Ramirez became the 11th active player to have homered against all 30 major league teams.
  • Dodgers home run leaders: Ethier, 4; Casey Blake, 3; Ramirez & Hudson, 2 each; Matt Kemp & Rafael Furcal, 1 each.
  • From ESPN.com's Dodgers page:
  • Indians 22, Yankees 4. You think Joe Torre had a chuckle about that yesterday?

Heading back to LA after a weekend in SF. Anything good happened when I was gone?

James McDonald turns it around today.

Beautiful numbers the Dodgers have put up early in the season. Hopefully they keep it up.

Go Dodgers. Go Lakers.

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers are rolling, but the Padres are keeping pace as the Phils roll over and play dead. In fact, the Padres are leading 4-0 in the fifth.

Thanks a lot, Phillies, for showing up this series!

PenosCabell said...

I was certain the Padres would be the worst team in the NL. They can't keep this up.

Steve Sax said...

4-3 SD over the Phils, bottom eight

Orel said...

Vin looks like he's broadcasting from Elysian Fields.

PenosCabell said...

The backround looked misty

Phillies won 5-4, walk off 2 run homer by Raul Ibanez.

Orel said...

Sweet!

Orel said...

Who got the loss for the Padres?

Orel said...

McD K's Helton!

PenosCabell said...

He blew Helton away

PenosCabell said...

Edwin Moreno took the loss for San Diego

Orel said...

I was hoping it would be Heath Bell.

PenosCabell said...

good inning

Orel said...

23 pitches for McD in the first.

Orel said...

Seven pitches and Furcal didn't swing once.

karina said...

but he got the walk...by the way, Kemp is batting behind Son Martin, is Torre getting desperate for Martin's slow start?

PenosCabell said...

gorgeous run and hit

karina said...

O Dogg!

Orel said...

O-Double! Furcal could have walked home. 1-0 Dodgers.

Orel said...

oops, here's the lineup:

Furcal, SS
Hudson, 2B
Ramirez, LF
Ethier, RF
Loney, 1B
Martin, C
Kemp, CF
Blake, 3B
McDonald, P

Orel said...

Not sure what Torre's thinking, Karina. But he doesn't want to freak Martin out, and Kemp seems to be hitting no matter where they put him.

PenosCabell said...

I think Torre should have stuck with Ethier batting before Manny

Orel said...

Manny's staying in the three-hole.

PenosCabell said...

gorgeous run and hit

Orel said...

Run & hit! 2-0 Dodgers!

karina said...

Ethier RBI double. King james is up!, One out

Orel said...

Orel said...

"Another problem he had in his earlier days—and heck, that's like yesterday afternoon, really..." —Vin, on Jimenez

PenosCabell said...

McDonald could use an easy inning.

Orel said...

Furcal saves a run. Bases loaded, two out. Let's see how McD reacts.

karina said...

Thanks to Furcal, men at the corners.

karina said...

I mean, Furcal made a great play (my last post sounded like he did a bad thing)

PenosCabell said...

McDonald is shooting himself in the foot.

PenosCabell said...

49 pitches. At this rate he'll be done in no time.

PenosCabell said...

Indianola, Iowa.

Steve Sax said...

Lucky we got the line out from the Dextometer to end the top of the second.

Steve Sax said...

PC, what's indianola?

Steve Sax said...

Bearded one gets hit! Where did Jimenez hit him?

PenosCabell said...

Thats where Casey Blake is from, and we've heard Vinny say it a million times now

Orel said...

Casey Blake gets plunked on the forearm and he's smiling at first.

PenosCabell said...

good bunt

Orel said...

Way to get the bunt down, McD!

PenosCabell said...

Nice!

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Huddy is on fire!!!!

Orel said...

The crowd is watching with its heart on that fly out by Manny. 3-0 Dodgers.

Damon said...

this Hudson is a good ballplayer

Orel said...

What's a "Dutch uncle"?

Steve Sax said...

dudes, you gotta get more descriptive--i'm doing this by blackberry, switching back and forth, and it's hard to tell what is going on!

PenosCabell said...

Wow!

Orel said...

The defense, ladies & gentlemen! Casey Blake with the sweet pick at third to start the inning-ending 5-4-3 DP.

PenosCabell said...

Steve Sax - Casey Blake just turned a sweet double play.

Orel said...

Hey Sax, did you see that?!

karina said...

Nice double play!. I think i'm falling in love more and more with this current team, including its question marks.

Orel said...

Nice backhand grab by Barmes on a hard-hit liner by Loney.

MattyA said...

Orel - a Dutch Uncle is someone who tells it like it is in order to improve someone else

Orel said...

from Wikipedia:

Dutch uncle is a term for a person who issues frank, harsh, and severe comments and criticism to educate, encourage, or admonish someone. Thus, a "Dutch uncle" is a person who is rather the reverse of what is normally thought of as avuncular or uncle-like (which would be indulgent and permissive).

Dusto_Magnifico said...

I love listening to Vin.

Orel said...

MattyA sneaks in!

Orel said...

Dutch Uncle gets caught in a rundown.

Orel said...

Prime Ticket is calling Manny "the Mayor." Doesn't quite fit.

MattyA said...

Being ethnically Dutch I find it offensive and degrading

MattyA said...

I'm kidding... but not about being ethnically Dutch

Orel said...

Aflac: Manny Ramirez has 54 career multi-HR games. Who is the all-time leader?

Orel said...

MattyA will never buy you dinner.

Orel said...

A trio of Dodgers converged on a high pop-up by Hawpe. The ball landed on the line and Manny accidentally knocked it into the stands. Double.

karina said...

My great grandmother was dutch.

Why is Martin called Uncle Dutch? i don't get it

Orel said...

LAL 98, UTH 86, 5:56 remaining.

Orel said...

Karina, Vin called Martin a "Dutch uncle" when Martin went to the mound to give McDonald advice.

PenosCabell said...

Lakers were up by 22 at halftime

karina said...

Aflac question in the Rockies broadcast. There have been 10 no hitters in Dodger Stadium, but only 2 perfect games. Who threw them?

PenosCabell said...

"discretion is the better part of valour"

PenosCabell said...

Whats McDonald's pitch count at?

Orel said...

McDonald at 77 pitches after four.

karina said...

77 pitches, Penos Campell

PenosCabell said...

He definitely looks better in this start.

Orel said...

Dodgers Aflac answer: Babe Ruth, 72

karina said...

Sandy Koufax threw one...who was the other?

PenosCabell said...

Missed the HR by a couple of feet.

Orel said...

Kemp double! 13 straight!

PenosCabell said...

Dennis Martinez?

Orel said...

I don't know, Karina.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

uh... Matt Kemp is really good!

PenosCabell said...

Karina - Dennis Martinez

Orel said...

Nice call, PC.

PenosCabell said...

Thanx Orel

Orel said...

Furcal RBI double! 4-0 Dodgers!

karina said...

That's how it's done, Raffy!

Dodgers 4-Rockies 0

Thanks Penos

PenosCabell said...

Karina - No problem.

Keep it going O-Dogg!

PenosCabell said...

Lakers win 113-100

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Charlie Steiner on the maple bat problem: I don't know if you saw this piece on the internet contraption, but there is an insect that attacks the ash bats...

really, he called it an "internet contraption".

PenosCabell said...

Scott Elbert warming up in the 'pen

karina said...

Go Lakers!

Dusto_Magnifico said...

and McD walks the pitcher... cue the stat on how many times a run scores on a lead off walk.

PenosCabell said...

It looks like McDonald has hit the wall

PenosCabell said...

McDonald's pitch count?

PenosCabell said...

uh oh

Orel said...

88

karina said...

Roy Campanella quote on tv (sort of)

Secrecy is the idea of a catcher giving sings to a pitcher, but a few catchers are so bad at it, after a few pitches anyone can see it since any seat in the stands.

Then a shot of Campanella's retired number.

Orel said...

Sorry, 95 pitches. And he's gone.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

in comes elbert

PenosCabell said...

Too bad McDonald can't pick up the win. But I must admit he looked much better today. Every outing will get better for the kid. Confidence and experience will make him better.

Orel said...

James McDonald is a stoic young fellow.

Orel said...

DAMN, IT'S MATT KEMP!

karina said...

All hail the Bison!!!!!!!!

defensive play of the week?

PenosCabell said...

Amazing@!

karina said...

Matt Kemp is building his case for a Gold Glove.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

did Kemp steal one?

Orel said...

Didn't quite steal a homer but saved at least two runs on a twisting catch at the wall.

PenosCabell said...

Manolo!

karina said...

Back to back walks. Martin's up.

Steve Sax said...

4-0 and rolling along, nice!

PenosCabell said...

Bad time to walk the dog, que no?

Orel said...

OZ: "Matt Kemp, on his way to stardom." —Vin

Orlando Zepeda said...

only one without a hit left

Orlando Zepeda said...

that'll do it

karina said...

This could be a great time for King james to have his first hit of the game.

karina said...

Hawpe homered off Elbert

Orlando Zepeda said...

Hopefully the Dodgers make like the Lakers and 9 is the closest they get.

Steve Sax said...

Sorry I'm late coming back here. Wxactly who was Vin referring to as a Dutch Uncle?

karina said...

back to back of singles, bottom of the 8th.

Slappy at the plate.

karina said...

Russell Martin, talking to James McDonald.

Orel told me.

Steve Sax said...

Corpas in to pitch, but it's more like Corpse. Two leadoff singles by Furcal and Castro, and now a four-pitch walk to Slappy.

Rancho ardiendo!

Steve Sax said...

Andre came SOOOO close to a rancho ardiendo...if he hadn't hit it to the deepest part of the stadium, it would have been gone

Steve Sax said...

Loney gets a RBI hit--he was the last starter to get a hit today

Steve Sax said...

Martin GIDPs what a surprise

karina said...

I think i could get used to this non-stop hitting machine, how about you?

It feels very strange, like it wouldn't belong to the Dodgers.

karina said...

Stve, Martin has reached base 4 times today. Maybe he's just had a slow start.

karina said...

Kemp HOMERED again!let's go blueeeeeee!

karina said...

Dodgers 14-Rockies 2

He homered off Huston Street, no easy task!

PenosCabell said...

Kemp tearing it up!

Nice job, everybody!

karina said...

Ladies and Gents, Dodgers win!

Dusto_Magnifico said...

what a day!

PenosCabell said...

Great game! Great Homestand. Lets keep the victories coming on the road.

Steve Sax said...

True Karina, I'm just being harsh as Martin usually gets off to a good start. He also got picked off and caught stealing today...ugh. I think he's batting .250.

Steve Sax said...

New Post-Game Thread Up Top (NPGTUT).

karina said...

But his OBP should get lots higher. I don't like his slow start either, because he's (without any doubt) the soul and body of the team, the thread that keeps everything together.

Let's trust him, i know he'll give tons of happy memories this season, like he always does.
