I'm Picking Up Two

Porsche is taking orders for the 918 Spyder, the company's first hybrid sports car. They're only $845,000 each, and only 918 are being made, so naturally you'll want to get on that list ASAP. Does it come with a certificate of authenticity? Because I want to make sure I'm not buying a bootleg.

The best part of this deal is that since production of the 918 Spyder doesn't start until September of 2013, Porsche is offering the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder — basically a gas-powered lookalike — but only to those who order the hybrid 918 Spyder. Oh, and the starting price for the pinch-hitting car starts at $160,000.

All in all, this sounds like a veritable cornucopia of smart spending (think of all the money you'll save with a hybrid!). I'm looking forward to seeing you paying $15 for Dodger Stadium parking in your 918 hybrid!

It's more onerous than that, you gotta put down $200K (well, the Porsche dealership that you order the car through) before Porsche commits to building, then another $200K once Porsche says they got all the parts and are ready to do the actual production then the balance before they'll ship the car to you. So, that means the dealership (and therefore the customer) needs to completely pre-pay the car before they can get their grubby hands on it.

EK - You go for the 918 and I'll pick up the gas version.
