Game 90 Thread: July 16 @ Cards, 5p

Chad Billingsley (7-4, 4.14) vs. Jaime Garcia (8-4, 2.17).

COMMENTS (from Sax): Well, that first game back from the All-Star Break didn't go as planned. The Dodgers' 7-1 loss, driven by a tough outing by Clayton Kershaw (4.1 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) and 0-fers from Rafael Furcal, Matt Kemp, Manny Ramirez, James Loney, and Casey Blake (a combined 0-for-17 with no walks and 6 Ks), is one thing. But meanwhile, Tim Lincecum rolled the Giants to victory, and the Padres got an extra day off thanks to the parity-loving folks in the Commissioner's Office. Oh yeah, and this McCourt divorce stuff doesn't just mean that we ain't getting any relief help in the 'pen; it's so bad, even pitchers we don't even want on our team still get in the game (0.2 IP, 1 K, 1 H, 7.09 ERA). Can Chad Billingsley get us back on course before we fall into a tie for third place?

@Mr C since I'm not drinking tonight (thanks Dodgers), can you drink one for me, please?

Did everybody give up?

I'm still here, but I got distracted.

@Mr. C

You channeling Pepe?

Paul said...

It is 8:30 and still 100 degrees. This is oppresive.

Paul said...

Why are the Dodgers announcers dressed up like cable guys?

Nostradamus said...

@Paul

*le sigh*

You know it...

karina said...

@Paul 100 degrees at 8:30 is for rookies :)

Cerveza, I must apologize, but I had to jump ship and head straight for a huge homemade margarita. Eases the pain.

Anyone in the neighborhood is free to drop by. I'll be on the patio, moping.

@Karina

I was in Mark Twain's coldest winter city for too long. My abuelo would call me a sissy. When he lived in this house he didn't even have air conditioning. He would just sit out on the porch and deal with it.

Guys, have fun. I'll just try to fall asleep watching Scooby Doo and Tom and Jerry. There's a drawing class to take and some creative work to do tomorrow.

Paul said...

@Dusty

on a night like this that sounds good but I had a rough day. I am paying for my dance with the catholic whiskey last night.

karina said...

@Paul I feel your pain! take a cold shower, put some light clothing on and have a cold beverage of your preference. You'll be fine in no time.

Kyle Baker said...

@Paul

Clearly you need to mix in some Protestant whiskey as well, just no Santeria whiskey.

Kyle Baker said...

Man! I wish there were some old Scooby Doo episodes on right now. I could totally get into that the rest of the evening.

Frisco winning. Pod Rays winning.

BOOOOOOOO!!!!

Kyle Baker said...

Wow...Bengie Molina hit for the cycle. Should I go post that on McC?

Steve Sax said...

I am too bummed and it is too hot for me to write a PGT.

Josh S. said...

So, Bengie polished off a Wendy's single, a Double Whopper, a triple scoop of Rocky Road, and a Denny's Grand Slam?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I don't quite care for the Cardinals.

Kyle Baker said...

If you want to really feel shitty, Sax, compare Karina's son's batting stats w Buster Posey's.

*hangs self*

Kyle Baker said...

Not making this up: Molina hurt his leg while he was going for 3B and had to be helped off the field.

Presumably he needed a bucket of chicken injection after the game.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I think it's laughable that Molina hits for the cycle, and yet the only run for the entire game for both teams comes on the homer hit for that cycle.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Wait, nevermind. I thought he was still playing for San Francisco.

That's an excellent summary of the evening, Spanky. It almost reads like a poem. A sad, sad poem.

So today we win? Right? Meanwhile at the barn.... I have my sea legs back. Lots of cleaning up to get ready to put in new floors. Only 106 here today and Kuroda on the mound in St. Louis ( cries).

As if we need more fodder to complain about Collins, here is a prime example of why he is awful. He doesn't stop talking about whatever topic he's stuck on to CALL THE PLAY. Most of his "play-by-play" takes place after the play has occurred. Lyons is guilty of this too, but usually it's Collins that starts the nonsensical conversations.

ALSO, HE ASKED LYONS WHAT GLOVE HE USED TO USE! WHO THE HELL CARES?!

Kyle Baker said...

That's exactly it, Josh. I wish I had a soundboard where I could just push one button that would trigger a clip of me saying "Just call the damn play!"

It would be one thing if Collin had as his broadcast partner someone like Pete Rose and it might be interesting and insightful to get his thoughts and experiences on a certain situation similar to one happening in the game at hand, but come on - it's Steve fuckin' Lyons! If this guy had an brilliant insight into mastering the game, he sure didn't show it in his career.

Yesterday they got stuck talking about Lyons' role in some trade where he had some tiny, bit part in it - player to be named later type stuff - and they went on and on about it and what it felt like to be traded and all that crap. I was looking for my "Just call the damn play!" button for the rest of the game.

Paul said...

That is why I have always been a bit anti athelete in the booth because most bring their knowledge of the themselves and not their knowledge of the game. There are some tremendous exceptions but there is also lot of crappy ones.

You have to go with the flow of the game. Vinny captins the boat going with the tide. Collins has to force things back and back again. Steiner for some reason is delayed and his mistakes make no sense to me it is almost like he has to be doing it intentionally.
