Game 89 Thread: July 15 @ Cards, 5p

Clayton Kershaw (9-4, 2.96) vs. Chris Carpenter (9-3, 3.29).

COMMENTS: Vicente Padilla may have been the Dodgers' opening-day starter, but who did Joe Torre choose as his second-half starter? None other than Kershaw, who is starting to find the consistency that can turn him into a number-one pitcher. However, the Dodgers always kinda seem to suck at Busch Stadium, so Kershaw has quite a challenge — made more difficult by going up against the Cards' co-ace Carpenter. Here's hoping Kershaw is as smooth as the Old Spice guy, my new hero.

UPDATE: Manny's back!

Jill-less Dylan says no word on the roster move for Manny.

Kyle Baker said...

Not only did I enjoy a long, leisurely lunch at Cole's, but I also was able to return to the welcome news that Manny was back in the mix. Woe be it that Blake and DeWitt are separated in the lineup, but otherwise I hereby declare it a good day, in the way that Ice Cube intended.

Dick Joke to the DL. GAARP's name is written on the roster in permanent marker.

Josh S. said...

It's officially a lumbar strain for Reed. Yet, Anderson's lumber issue continues unabated.

Kyle Baker said...

How are we supposed to engage in juvenile double entenrdre with Johnson limping to the DL? I'm going to have to totally re-tool my schtick now.

spank said...

I guess Johnson couldn't hang with the injury.

Kyle Baker said...

^ subtract one 'r' from 'entendre'

karen said...

I love the Old Spice man!

Nostradamus said...

@Dusty

You said tool.

karen said...

Oh crap, we have Eric Collins

Kyle Baker said...

Dusty out...going to Tivo then watch with my Dodgerettes when we all get home. Might pop up with random snark that is out of synch in space and time given that I'll be innings behind, but hey, that never stopped me before!

Josh S. said...

Steiner is on vacation. I like Monday calling games by himself, dry as his delivery may be.

Kid K wilting in the heat a bit?

Steve Sax said...

This is not a good start.

Nostradamus said...

Now would be a good time for an out.

Nostradamus said...

NUTSHOT!

karen said...

Sheesh

Josh S. said...

Heh, Monday just called OPS "on-base slugging percentage."

Josh S. said...

So, uh, how 'bout that Green Lantern costume?

Nostradamus said...

It could have definitely been worse.

MeanieBreanie said...

Epale everyone! It looks like we got off to a bit of a rough start. The game is young and anything can happen (thinking positive as shpunt is sent our way). Xanax and liquor are nearby should it become necessary.

karen said...

That's our All Star centerfielder

karina said...

Epale, everyone!

this is a young game, let's not panic so soon.

karen said...

DeDouble!!

Nostradamus said...

@karina

I'm not sweating yet (mostly because I haven't left the office, it's hotter than Dusty's armpit out there). The first could have been really ugly, but hopefully Kid K has settled down.

MeanieBreanie said...

Nice double play!

karina said...

@Mr C I like the way you talk

karina said...

Ethier power!

karen said...

YAY ANDRE!!!!!

MeanieBreanie said...

Dre!

karina said...

@Orel @karen since I don't live in the U.S, I was curious why "Old Spice" sometimes is a trending topic on Twitter.

I gotta confess even there's the game on TV, I spent the last half hour watching the guy and now I'm enlightened.

However, I've promised myself I'm not watching any of that anymore.

Steve Sax said...

slow comment day today. we must all be on all-star break still

MeanieBreanie said...

@Karina - the Old Spice guy is much finer than the actual scent. The stuff smells like repellent. Men that choose to wear it will send a lot of women running in the opposite direction. You've got to give credit to a good marketing campaign.

karen said...

@karina

Old Spice is a men's cologne in the US. It's been around a long time but this beautiful man is the new ad campaigns spokesperson.

Josh S. said...

We will never sweep a Collins-called road series.

karen said...

The Kid just didn't bring his stuff with him tonite

MeanieBreanie said...

The kid is pissed. It bites when you have a really bad day at the office.

Josh S. said...

They have asked this same text question about five times now.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Two words: Fire Collins.

Four words: Hot tub time machine.

karina said...

@Meaniebreanie @karen when we were little, my dad used to wear Old Spice sometimes (because my dad always have to smell like perfume). My mom hated it so much she complained non stop (sort of like Neeebs described) 'till my dad stopped using it.

If she spoke some English, I'd show her these ads, though I know she's gonna say the guy is handsome and has a great voice.

karina said...

GAARP: automatic out.

Josh S. said...

What Psycho is saying right now is so stupid I can't bring myself to retype it.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Someone please tell me that Wainwright isn't taking the hill at any point during this series.

Josh S. said...

"Little big little James?l

Steve Sax said...

Eric Collins is KILLING US. His curse must be stopped.

karina said...

@Josh was he talking about King James?. I got the Cardinals broadcast

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

What is Ethier's secret that lets him hit Carpenter so well?

MeanieBreanie said...

These announcers are nauseating.

MeanieBreanie said...

@Mr. LASF
If only the rest of our guys could figure it out.

karen said...

T-Slick not impressing me much

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That just-right convergence of crappy hitting and crappy pitching. Better to have them together than individually.

NicJ said...

I like this kind of loss a little better than the normal soul crushing ones we usually receive in St Louis

karina said...

@MrLASF @Nic J maybe tomorrow we'll get our pitching and great hitting.

MeanieBreanie said...

We need some mojo!

NicJ said...

im just hoping for a series split with us taking the back two.

Although since we swept the cards in LA im bracing myself for the worst.

NicJ said...

Lyons: Carpenter is looking good but not dominant.

WTF?!

karen said...

What a terrible AB

NicJ said...

I know there are a ton of other priorities to be taken care of within the dodger organization but for the love of god, please get someone else to call the far away games.

This is downright unbearable.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hey it's that guy we fired! We're sure to get a fantastic performance out of him!

Fred's Brim said...

fuckity fuck

what the hell happened?

Fred's Brim said...

strange - Yahoo MLB has Flat Breezy pitching? Is that true? Or is it his g-g-ghost?

NicJ said...

@FB, the dodgers got of the team plane in St. Louis, and the normal stuff that happens here followed.

NicJ said...

another pitching change, cause we are still in this thing.

MeanieBreanie said...

@Fred
It's true. You might want to go back to what you had were doing before you joined us. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Fred's Brim said...

i refuse to turn on MLB.tv to see that sea of politely clapping red. Did they un-cut Breezy when Johnson went on the DL?

karina said...

@Mr LASF another hole in your wall?

Just saw the numbers of regular season games between Cards and Dodgers in St Louis since 2004. Depressing.

Fred's Brim said...

christ - let Breezy give up the homer to Pujols. Why subject Link to that? He's more important to us than Breez at this point

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Pulling Sherrill has just worked out swimmingly.

karen said...

This is not the sterling start I was hoping to begin the second half with

Fred's Brim said...

i can't stand this.
I gotta go run an errand,
If you hear a story about Eric Collins going missing, you ain't seen me, OK?

MeanieBreanie said...

That was ugly! Hopefully we can pull it together or this is going to be one long series.

karen said...

I feel like it's the start of the season all over again

karina said...

Ladies and gents, let's calm down, ok?

But I need to wipe tonight's Sherrill out of my memory.

Nostradamus said...

Yuck. Well, still only one loss.

Hurts less to be boatraced that lose by one. We were never in it.

Nostradamus said...

And we still beat their asses down in two straight series up to this one.

spank said...

Looking at the comments,I'm glad I don't have K-Cal.What a bummer for Kid K. I took a nap instead. Should have stayed asleep. We live to play another day. I'll summon the power of the Schwartz tomorrow. Better Daze

Josh S. said...

@karina 7:09

Collins was talking about the Loney bobblehead. He said, "Get your own little big little James." I think he misread the copy.

Kyle Baker said...

sweet mother of fuckin shit

NicJ said...

Lincecum with the CGSHO, yay.

Kyle Baker said...

holy flippin shitslime crapstank this game is sucking

Kyle Baker said...

Positive note: Casey god dang Blake! Excellent fielding night.

Kyle Baker said...

sherrill, you son of a motherless goat!

Kyle Baker said...

Was that gut-wrenching to see Torre take the ball from Flat Breezy or what?

Well, I thought Kid K would hang in there a little better but knew that this game was always going to be an uphill battle.

We'll get 'em tomorrow...

rbnlaw said...

I need to take a fucking shower (which is much better than the regular kind). Just came back from my usual Thursday night visit to Angelo's in Anaheim when a gaggle of Los Angeles Angels' fans walked in with their rally monkeys, ugly jerseys, and faux Mardi Gras beads, saying things like "Whooo Angels."
I didn't understand all the hoopla. After all, they just beat a team that is 15 games out of contention and just traded their best starter (although Felix Hernandez goes tomorrow. . .I just know that, OK?)

They all stared at my Dodger shirt as I was leaving.

Fuck them in the armpit, I say!

Fred's Brim said...

Fred's Brim ANGRY

MeanieBreanie said...

Let's hope the boys in blue are ANGRY too. I think we are all ready for a little payback.

Kyle Baker said...

We'll get 'em today...

rbnlaw said...

I apologize for last night's post as I was both tired and slightly intoxicated.

In hindsight, I would like to say, "Choke on one, Angel fans."

And for the Blue; Score some facking runs!! Go Manny!

Kyle Baker said...

You're apologizing for making fun of Angels fans???

Fred's Brim said...

I apologize for not doing it enough. I am sorry, everybody.

Kyle Baker said...

I hereby pledge to increase the amount of effort I contribute to making fun of Angels fans. You can take that to the bank, fellow SoSGers.
