Game 78 Thread: June 30 @ Giants, 12.45p

Vicente Padilla (1-2, 5.82) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (6-5, 3.03).

COMMENTS: This rare early afternoon matchup in San Francisco raises a cornucopia of intriguing questions. Like whether the chant of "Beat LA", unoriginal and untrue (given we haven't had a losing record against the Giants since 2005, when we finished 20 games below .500), resonates as loudly in the crisp morning air. Or whether the chardonnay will be chilled in time for the first pitch. Or whether Kung Fu Panda is as potent from the plate with only seven meals in his belly.

What is NOT in question, however, is James Loney's ability to knock in RBIs. He seems to get 'em in bunches — he had three last night — and leads the Dodgers with 51 for the season. Or Matt Kemp's potential to be a force when focused — he had two hits and two fine defensive plays last night. If the Dodgers sweep the Giants today, especially since Manny Ramirez will be sitting with a tweaked hamstring, Loney and/or Kemp will contribute in a major way. You can book it.

In fact, I'll go out on a limb here and predict a 4-2 victory, so we can have deja deja vu vu.

this GT is a joint effort from Sax and Orel. We endorse this GT.

We do seem to miss Timmah's turn in the rotation with surprising frequency, don't we. Not that I'm complaining.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Mr. C - Vin said the same thing yesterday.

Kyle Baker said...

Didn't he just beat fuck out of us at the beginning of the season? (Timmah, not Vin)

Kyle Baker said...

I remember now. I was at that game:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/LAN/LAN201004170.shtml

My game notes say "Charlie Haeger's knuckleball wasn't working."

9-0.

Nostradamus said...

Presumably, Vin properly phrased it as a question. That's because he's a professional that cares about his craft, unlike myself.

MR.F said...

I am going to start a "game notes" spreadsheet on games I've attended. I'm also thinking about a shared "Sons of Steve Garvey Game Notes" spreadsheet where we can all log what games we've attended. Would anybody care to partake?

Josh S. said...

Padilla/Rowand II: Turn the Other Cheek

Nostradamus said...

Dusty,

Yes, he did. If I recall correctly, though, that had been the first time in a long time, and we've not faced him in subsequent series.

Nostradamus said...

@MR. F

Like a Google Docs thing? I'd contribute to that.

Kyle Baker said...

@ Mr C

Exactly. The last time we had faced him was at the very end of last season. I was also at that game.

Game notes:

"Knocked Lincecum out in 4th inning and never looked back. Excellent start from R. Wolf. Ethier 2-run HR to put him at 101 RBI on the season." (9/20/2009)

I liked that game better.

Kyle Baker said...

Yeah, a Google docs thingy would be a fine idea, Mr F. Also, changing your avatar to a sassy looking A. Milano would, too.

Nostradamus said...

Was that the last time? I'm pretty sure I was at that game, as well.

Nostradamus said...

We should start a pool on what inning KFP will royally fuck up today.

Kyle Baker said...

I'm dismayed at the total lack of KFP/cake GIFs around here. Let's pick it up, ladies and gentlemen!

SteveC said...

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

MR.F said...

Yeah it'll be a google docs thing. When I have time to start it =X.

And I'm only changing my avatar after getting Smonk.

Kyle Baker said...

We HAVE to beat these chumps:

Rowand CF
F. Sanchez 2B
Huff RF
Burrell LF
Sandoval 3B
Uribe SS
Posey 1B
Whiteside C
J. Sanchez SP

Josh S. said...

Posey starting? Who will pinch fail in the 9th?

Kyle Baker said...

@Josh

Mark DeRosa?....oh.

Kyle Baker said...

@Mr F

Perhaps Mr C and I can sketch out a Google Docs plan on a cocktail napkin on Friday as we take in the footy.

Dre was scheduled to get the day off, thus we get the World According to GAARP.

(I don't know why anyone needs a day off the day before an off-day, but I'm not a baseball manager.)

Josh S. said...

Two-thirds of my avatar should be available today.

Kyle Baker said...

@ Josh

I'm going to stick with my GAARP/Torre foot massage theory.

Kyle Baker said...

GAARP turns 38 today. I have just the present for him! DFA cake!

Mrs Dusty and MDIL are only vaguely honored to share the same bday as GAARP.

Josh S. said...

It's GAARP's birthday.

Happy 68th, Garret!

Josh S. said...

Today's GT theme: Josh is one step behind Dusty.

Kyle Baker said...

The Manny injury isn't minor, perhaps. Per D. Hernandez:

"Dodgers haven't decided whether to put Manny on the DL. MRI exam scheduled for tomorrow."

Kyle Baker said...

XAVIER PAUL IS THE FUTURE OF THIS ORGANIZATION!

Josh S. said...

AS LONG AS HE'S NOT PLAYING RIGHT FIELD!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Has anyone kept track of lineup records?

Josh S. said...

@MLASF: not since I did it the last time.

Steve Sax said...

Anderson batting sixth? Can someone please get Jason Repko on the phone?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We've got the extra OF, so that helps. I'd say call up a reliever instead of XP. We need some help for the 'pen. We'll get along fine with Johnson/GAARP platooning for 15 days.

Steve Sax said...

FWIW, I liked the comment during the GT that referenced Phoenix/1901, saying that they thought 1901 was the year GAARP was born.

Good one.

Josh S. said...

@Sax: To bat or to injure GAARP?

Josh S. said...

I suppose they could dick around for a little bit. I forgot you can retroactively DL someone.

Kyle Baker said...

Repko would injure himself trying to injure GAARP.

Josh S. said...

Between tomorrow and when the Dodgers face SD again (@SD, 7/27), they face:

@ARI, FLA, CHC, @STL, SF, and NYM.

During that same stretch, the Pads face:

HOU, @WSH, @COL, ARI, @ATL, and @PIT.

At first glance, it seems like they have the easier stretch, but we have more home games.

Lineup records

Dusty: 23-17
MLASF: 9-4
Josh: 7-5
No lineup: 2-1
Nic: 1-0
David: 0-1
Jason: 0-1
Sax: 0-2
KempKershaw: 0-4

Greg Zakwin said...

Hey hey now. I could go at least 1-4. Bloop single, something like that.

Greg Zakwin said...

My joke was that bad, it shut down the thread? Impressive.

Josh S. said...

You COULD go 1-4, but the Kemp half of your name is pressing.

Kyle Baker said...

I vote that Nic does the lineups from now on, then.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

So with percentages it's

Dusty - .575
MLASF - .693
Josh - .583
No lineup - .667
Nic - 1.000
David - .000
Jason - .000
Sax - .000
KempKershaw - .000

We have the best chance of winning when Nic posts the lineup. Then me, then no lineup, then Josh, then Dusty.

Kyle Baker said...

I'm 9-3 on games attended this season.

Dodgers are 7 games over .500 and I'm 6 over .500 in posting lineups. So pretty much commensurate with how the team is doing. Interesting.

Steve Sax said...

I don't even remember doing one lineup all year (unless I was cut-and-pasting info from someone else). But I'll stay off the lineups for now on.

Worse than that, I'm 1-3 this year at the Stadium. I'm gonna notch a win on July 5, dammit.

Kyle Baker said...

This is a good time for Small Sample Size to pipe up.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That was disappointing.

Steve Sax said...

Dodger team strikeouts

Matt Kemp 87
Casey Blake 58
Russell Martin 45
James Loney 44

How can Kemp be almost 30 more Ks than the #2 Dodger? That's ridiculous.

Steve Sax said...

0-0 after 1/2 inning

spank said...

Battletoad Time! I wanna see some K's and bodies on the ground.

dodgerdoll said...

Wow. I knew Kemp struck out a lot but that is insulting.

Josh S. said...

Steve Sax said...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Freddy K's. I have a feeling the devil will be jumping up soon.

Steve Sax said...

Damn, Josh S, that is one scary stat. I'm doing all I can not to post on this as the Rihanna effect, but his play has just been abhorrent. What are Kemp's batting splits in June?

spank said...

@ Josh You are joking about Kemps June K's right?

Kyle Baker said...

Josh said:

"I'd pay a couple bucks extra for a version of Gameday Audio that carried audio from the TV broadcasts."

I'm sure lots of people would. But the unholy triumvirate of MLB/TV broadcasters/advertisers won't let this happen. Mainly, TV folks claim they paid tons of cash for right to broadcast the game, so they want your butt planted in front of the TV to see their broadcasts (incl their commercials and their lead-ins to other shows and so forth). Advertisers claim they spent tons of cash to get advertising time during the broadcasts, and they don't want viewers access the game in ways other than your having your butt planted in front of the TV. MLB doesn't want to disrupt these relationships.

Consumer loses, even though s/he is willing to pay for the product. Until they figure out a way to access local games alternately, charge customers, and spread revenue between these entities, we will continue to be hosed.

GIDP by NL team (as of yesterday)

SF 83

Atlanta 65
Houston 64

Dodgers are #10 with 56. Best team is SD with 39.

Josh S. said...

I wish, Spanky, I wish.

Steve Sax said...

.208 in June? That's almost GAARP levels of incompetence.

karina said...

Epale everyone!

Kyle Baker said...

"I wish, Spanky, I wish."

That's what Josh tells all the ladies.

Kyle Baker said...

Great, I say something rude right as Karina shows up.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The problem with TV broadcasts is that they're made for television. Radio guys know they have no video to work with. If you get TV broadcasts, you'll just be hearing stupid things like "Alexei! YESSS! YESSSS!"

Steve Sax said...

And speaking of GAARP's incompetence, Anderson takes a 3-0 count and turns it into a popout to first base. Thanks, Garret!

Josh S. said...

GAARP in June:

.244/.244/.390/.634

Someone tape that to Matt's locker.

spank said...

Fucking GAARP can't even hit the ball out of the infield

Steve Sax said...

Sanchez, 29 pitches through two.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

MSB's playing third. If he played second this would all be better.

Steve Sax said...

Nice. Now that Vin has taught me that Buster Posey's real first name is Gerald, I'm definitely chanting this each game.

Sort of like "Larry" for Chipper

karina said...

I've got the Giants broadcast. I should be grateful I can actually watch the game, but...

Steve Sax said...

Accidentally closed Gameday Audio and didn't get it back until after Kemp's at bat. Yay for runs!

Steve Sax said...

way to go matty!

2-0 off a kemp single that scores carroll and furcal--plus kemp takes second on the burrell error

dodgerdoll said...

Kemp got a base hit! It's a Christmas miracle.

Josh S. said...

What, Kemp and Loney can't be good at the same time?

Steve Sax said...

come on, FJL, give us a third run

Steve Sax said...

shit

Steve Sax said...

pretty ballsy to let kemp swing with a 3-0 count

Kyle Baker said...

@Karina

Seriously a long and important email, or were you being sarcastic? Like I am when I get conflicting edits on Blogger and it loses the post I was working on, which is by definition of it being a post from me utterly useless. But I always claim it was going to be masterful insight and that all has been lost to time.

Steve Sax said...

padilla is going to give up a bomb sooner or later. i have a bad feeling it's sooner.

dodgerdoll said...

Seriously? how many times do they have to mention Rowand getting hit in the face by Padilla?

karina said...

@Dusty Baker it was a long email, its importance is relative but mainly, I'm just teasing you :)

Be right back, I need to pick up Coper, he's getting a haircut.

Josh S. said...

Dammit. Now it's Steiner time.

spank said...

Johnson is coming up shortly

Kyle Baker said...

We need to think of the word to describe the letdown when Vin hands it over to Rick and Steiner in the 4th.

Josh S. said...

"Line drive base hi...OH! It just goes foul."

Charley didn't make me wait long.

Kyle Baker said...

"There's a line drive base --- ooooh it's a foul." -Steiner

He got right to work!

Kyle Baker said...

You're finally ahead of me, Josh!

Josh S. said...

HA! Beat Dusty for once.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Dusty beat Josh to talking about how Josh beat Dusty.

Josh S. said...

Charley: "If you're just joining us...

Me: "...then you're dumb, because you missed Vin."

dodgerdoll said...

You guys think Steiner is bad, you don't have to listen to the Diamondbacks announcers when the Dodgers play them. Mark Grace is the worst EVER.

Josh S. said...

Great, now we're the ones with fat guys looking stupid on the basepaths.

Steve Sax said...

Belliard may have been picked off, but I still blame Anderson and yet another one of his Ks

dodgerdoll said...

Stupid Belliard.

spank said...

How come no one told me Lebron is a free agent. You would think it would be all over the news.

Josh S. said...

Banana curve? I prefer "soap bubble."

Josh S. said...

I think I've finally narrowed down what I don't like about the Steiner/Monday pairing. They call the game like they're doing the post-game show: Constant analysis. Every empty second is filled with breaking something down.

MR.F said...

A belated "whoo Kemp came through!"

Nostradamus said...

@dodgerdoll

It's true. I say many derogatory things about those two, but they aren't really insane homers in the true sense of the word. I continue to believe that the worst announcer in baseball is either Rob Dibble or Hawk Harrelson, but Grace is pretty high up there

spank said...

Pop out for Feast Mode

Nostradamus said...

@Josh

Yeah, that's my big problem with them. It always seems like the game taking place is incidental to their conversation.
