Vicente Padilla (1-2, 5.82) vs. Jonathan Sanchez (6-5, 3.03).
COMMENTS: This rare early afternoon matchup in San Francisco raises a cornucopia of intriguing questions. Like whether the chant of "Beat LA", unoriginal and untrue (given we haven't had a losing record against the Giants since 2005, when we finished 20 games below .500), resonates as loudly in the crisp morning air. Or whether the chardonnay will be chilled in time for the first pitch. Or whether Kung Fu Panda is as potent from the plate with only seven meals in his belly.
What is NOT in question, however, is James Loney's ability to knock in RBIs. He seems to get 'em in bunches — he had three last night — and leads the Dodgers with 51 for the season. Or Matt Kemp's potential to be a force when focused — he had two hits and two fine defensive plays last night. If the Dodgers sweep the Giants today, especially since Manny Ramirez will be sitting with a tweaked hamstring, Loney and/or Kemp will contribute in a major way. You can book it.
In fact, I'll go out on a limb here and predict a 4-2 victory, so we can have deja deja vu vu.
this GT is a joint effort from Sax and Orel. We endorse this GT.

I just reviewed the copa mundial thread. I was on an airplane during the Chile/Brazil debacle. That's why I was conspicuously absent from the WC talk.
I think Rowand and Padilla are square now.
I'm pulling for South America, with my favorites in this order: Uraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay.
I can live with the solo shot. VP's hopefully got at least another inning in him.
You can't be a pitcher on this staff unless you give up at least one run.
Carroll with another double!
Holy Ackbar! Carroll is on fire
@Neeebs
Damn, what did Paraguay ever do to you (other than play a really really boring match against Japan)?
WTF is this pitcher doing?
Fuck that, you cannot warn both benches after one beanball. Give us a chance to throw one
@dodgerdoll
Tanking?
This is an inning I wish I was seeing instead of just listening to.
Neeebs, Sunday was so bad, my father, the die-hard Yankees fan,apologized next morning. He felt asleep in the 7th inning.
"So, the Dodgers won the series, not too bad".When he saw my face and learned about the meltdown, he tried to comfort me: "they can reach the NLCS, blah, blah...besides the Dodgers got Torre, who's better than him?"
I wanted to tell him if it was up to me, I'd gift-wrap Torre and send him back to New York, but I bit my tongue for the first time that day. I can't be mean to my dad, specially after all the anger and disappointment of Sunday's game.
My dear dad is a proof that Yankees fan can be decent.
@Neeebs I'll go to the WC thread as soon as I finish what I'm doing.
this Gnat pitcher is a fucking mess
Pretty much, he's wilder than an E! reality show.
@MC
I still bitter about the Stoessner dynasty.
This guy hates bunting. He'll bean you if you set up for it.
Would you enjoy a good ol' brawl between the Dodgers and Giants?
Hey Casilla, don't mess with my son!
Dodgerdoll is on a roll.
Rancho Ardiendo and no outs!
Karina, why thank you. only the Giants could find a pitcher that sucks this bad.
Sergio Romo is from my hometown but my loyalty goes to the dodgers.
Ha! I forgot we were still batting. I thought that was a leadoff single by Kemp.
BISON CONCENTRATION!!!!
And Martin is down.
Kinda pissed at the Rockies right now.
I've been trying to figure out which dodger is Karina's son for the past week. Now I know it is Martin
@dodgerdoll you're displaying wits :)
Dang your right. Stupid Rockies can never do anything right.
Martin is down?
Martin seemed to hurt his hand, but he's still in there.
Yeah it was minor.
@Neeebs
Can't argue with the anti-authoritarianism sentiment, though one might say the same thing about other countries on that list.
@Karina-I try. :D
GAARP doin' his thing.
He's the only one I know who could go 0-4 on his birthday.
@MC
Don't say the P word. La Chilena would would get angry like only how a South American woman can.
@Neeebs
You'll notice how I politely sidestepped naming names.
GAARP should follow Junior's example and retire gracefully.
(Or sleep in the clubhouse during the game. I'm cool with either.)
I just saw on the TV, a guy sporting a Dodgers cap with...I don't know how to say it, a prohibition sign across the logo.
Respectfully, if you hate so much the Dodgers, why wearing a cap with the LA logo, even if you modified it? would you see a Red Sox fan with any variation of the Yankees cap?
I think so.
"Veteran Garrett Anderson who could tell you all about striking out multiple times..."-Vin
"The back of an occupied hearse was noisier than the flight after Sunday's game." - Steiner
How much noise does an unoccupied hearse make?
@karina,
It's like they're not even Giants fans. They're just Dodgers haters. That's pretty dumb to me.
98 pitches through 7 for Battle Toad. Coming back out in the 8th?
@karina
"would you see a Red Sox fan with any variation of the Yankees cap?"
Only if they were running outside to light it on fire.
;-)
@MR.F
I'm going to say no with his turn in the order coming up.
@Josh S.-WTF? Steiner, you continue to baffle.
hey, i'm back from a meeting.
Guess this won't be a 4-2 game.
Rick and Charley need a podcast. Then I can not download it.
@Neeebs "La Chilena would would get angry like only how a South American woman can"
*clearing my throat". I'm pretty sure I put the face prior of the angry reaction when I read that comment. Know that face, right?
On our defense, we are very loving and warm women. Some of us even have a very high boiling point.
Furcal's new nickname should be En Fuego.
I just read the OYSTER PUBES comment. Brilliant.
@Karina:
I'm blinded by the "face."
And I say that in the most loving way. I love La Chilena. I just don't understand the sangre caliente thing.
Padilla pulls an Ely and goes seven.
Way to go, Battletoad! Nice outing!
You know everything is not an anecdote. You have to discriminate. You choose things that are funny or mildly amusing or interesting. You're a miracle! Your stories have NONE of that. They're not even amusing ACCIDENTALLY! "Honey, I'd like you to meet Charley Steiner, he's got some amusing anecodotes for you. Oh and here's a gun so you can blow your brains out. You'll thank me for it." I could tolerate any insurance seminar. For days I could sit there and listen to them go on and on with a big smile on my face. They'd say, "How can you stand it?" I'd say, "'Cause I've been with Charley Steiner. I can take ANYTHING." You know what they'd say? They'd say, "I know what you mean. The baseball guy. Woah." It's like going on a date with a Chatty Cathy doll. I expect you have a little string on your chest, you know, that I pull out and have to snap back. Except I wouldn't pull it out and snap it back - you would. Agh! Agh! Agh! Agh! And by the way, you know, when you're telling these little stories? Here's a good idea - have a POINT. It makes it SO much more interesting for the listener!
Here we go...Troncoso on the mound now. Also, Vin said Manny's having an MRI tomorrow.
@Josh, 1:47p you have me cracking up.
@Mr F right, I forget that detail
@Mr C hahahahahahahahaha
@Josh S: 2:52p and 2:55p as well.
You are on fire today, a la Carroll
Aaron Rowand's .236 BA / 7 HR / 24 RBI is still a lot worse than our struggling Matt Kemp's .267 BA / 13 HR / 43 RBI.
FJL, GAARP, and Reedy Johnson are all 0-for-4.
GAARP has 3 K though, in going 0-for-4
@Steve Sax King James can suck once in a while...
SD is up 13-3, so I don't think we're gaining a game today
@Sax: Thank you, sir. Playing the Giants helps me raise my game.
@Neeebs awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I can't explain the "sangre caliente" thing, I guess it's in our DNA.
You might not understand it, but you know it's part of the charm :)
Poor Josh. Steiner's fucking with him
apparently playing the giants helps the dodgers raise their game, too...
@Steve Sax a sweep to the Giants is enough for today.
@Neeebs you are so sweet!
This whole Padres thing is starting to bug me. The schedule makes it seem like they're ducking us.
Anyone know who's closing today?
@Sax:
The glass is half full. We don't lose a game in the standings by simply taking 2/3 against the Giants.
SF still got 9 Ks today. And even if you take out GAARP's three gimmes, that's still six Ks, not bad.
@DodgerDoll:
LOL
you know it.
@Karina:
Part of the charm indeed!!!
Bison Concentration!!!!!
Loney is 0-4 today too. They shut down the machine.
loney's 0-for-5 now.
someone move his locker away from anderson's, please
Belliard tried to do us a favor, apparently.
Belliard tries to do his part to take out GAARP, standing in the on-deck circle.
Oh well.
"That was just good luck that Anderson didn't get hit." - Steiner
Depends on who you ask, Chuck.
(in all seriousness, i'm glad even garret anderson wasn't hurt on that one)
This at bat is taking forever.
I kinda want GAARP to get a hit on his birthday.
.182 average Geez!
Fourth strikeout of the day for Garret Anderson, now batting .180
Well, guess it wasn't to be.
@MR.F
Am I going to have to give you Dusty's famous speech about not feeling sorry for people? If he gets a (hopefully) meaningless hit here, that's one more roadblock to him going far far away.
At least GAARP is a gamer
I see I needn't have worried.
Anderson weighs 225. He hasn't batted his weight since APRIL 14, people.
I'm really enjoying this game thread! We need more day games so that I can be entertained at work.
Sherrill sighting
If you are listening to KABC, Ron Cey just asked me if I know what a conundrum is. Does he?
Give Away G A
Vin said GAARP is now 0-17.
A seven run lead is enough...
@Q7:
We're your strolling minstrels on the blog.
My fists just clenched, Sherill must be pitching.
@Spanky
Has he had a hit since the Wakefield game? I don't really even count those, as you can catch up to a KB while riding a Rascal.
anyone of you guys hear Steiner burp there at the end of his sentence?
maybe that's just me.
@ neeebs I never figured Cey as big on words
He burps ALL THE TIME. (I missed this one though. I had to change workstations and I didn't bring my headphones.)
DP?
Annnd...Breezy will now be relegated to "Aubrey Huff specialist" for the rest of the season.
I'll have to join in while watching the game from home next time. Gotta fire up the old brick of a laptop and play along from the couch.
@ Mr.C I do not know. I just consider him out and take a bathroom break
Come on Sherill, one more out and it's on to Arizona.
Posey got a hit in the ninth and Pablo reached second. The universe is collapsing on itself.
Is it just me, or does Posey look a bit like Jeff Kent?
GAARP is 0 for his last 17?
@Mr. C...
It's my natural inclination to be empathic. It's something I have to resist...
Oyster Pubes gets a single.
Massive Panda baserunning blunder in 3...2...1...
There is party to be made!
Or not, but how 'bout a SWEEP!!!
And, it's over. Beautifully done.
It's a SWEEP peeps!
woop!!
my floors are filthy, anybody got a broom?
@Mr. C: Not just you. See my comment at 1:18.
Winnnnnnnnnnnnner.
@Fred's Brim ask the Dodgers!
PGT up!
@Josh
So you did. Missed that part of the thread stuck in traffic.
Kemp with the professional interview.
Sigh, this means I have to go and pack now instead of continuing to procrastinate.
