Game 53 Thread: June 2 vs. D'backs, 12n

Carlos Monasterios (2-0, 2.20) vs. Edwin Jackson, RHP (3-6, 6.03)

It's a businessperson's special afternoon home game, one of only two at Dodger Stadium this year, so it's time to sneak out of work, catch the game, and see if we can extend our streak of walkoff victories to a third consecutive game (although, as Jon Weisman puts it, "getting an early lead is fine as well").

Former Dodger Jackson has been "pitching better of late" according to mlb.com, if you can count lowering his ERA from 8.07 at the start of May down to its current 6.03. Jackson lasted 6.2 innings against us in mid-May, giving up six runs and taking the loss. Meanwhile, Monasterios is undefeated and almost halfway to a five-bar gate. So why make the man with a schizophrenic audio settting suffer through a tense outing? Why not just score early (literally) and often, and let the crowd of Dodger fans just bask in the sun, enjoying getting even closer to the Padres before their afternoon scuffle with the Mets? And maybe have a couple of cold ones while we're at it (it's not like we're going back to work this afternoon, anyway)?

So, did Carlos have to buy both versions of the Beatles box set?

Fred's Brim said...

For those of you outside of the game attendance and local TV sphere, the game is on the MLB Network today, in case you want to sneak out of work and watch it in a bar

Orel said...

I think the ad-page jumpy thing should be fixed. Let me know.

MR.F said...

I did =X

rbnlaw said...

I really miss the Shortstop on days like this. I can't go for either mid-week matinee. Crap.

I am likely going this Sunday, though.

Orel said...

Sorry MRF, I missed it.

Betsy said...

Alas Aliso Viejo has no bars - or at least none that open early enough. Will be listening from the PC and hoping friends are enjoying my seats.

Steve Sax said...

I am still hoping that a lightning bolt comes down and smites my early afternoon meetings, so I can attend the game.

Alas, I think my comments about the protesting contingents at Dodger games probably further slims the already microscopically small chance of that happening.

MR.F said...

Oh that was a reply to Josh S.'s comment about the Beatles box sets.

Josh S. said...

Or badness, when you look at left field.

Josh S. said...

So, old man Manny gets a day off, replaced by only slightly less old and way more useless GAARP. Got it.

MR.F said...

Speaking of Beatles, Paul McCartney is going to phone company park for a concert. I feel like this will be one of my last chances to see a Beatle live. Too bad I don't know anybody interested enough to want to see Paul that's in the bay area.

rbnlaw said...

I'm not liking this line-up according to GAARP(GIDP).

rbnlaw said...

June 15 the Lost Angels are giving away hipster "fedoras." Red and ugly as hell.

I thought they were porkpie hats, but then, what do I know?

Josh S. said...

@rbn: I love the accompanying copy:

"Keep up with the styles with this red Angels Fedora Hat."

Yes, for making happy times with hat of Angel baseball team!

Steve Sax said...

STOP THE GARRET ANDERSON MADNESS, TORRE!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hey, I actually get to see Monasterios start!

Betsy said...

@ Mr. F when's he going to be in town?

Kyle Baker said...

Those Angels hats.....ewwwww.

Goodbye, pork pie hat.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Mmmmmmm, pork pie

Paul said...

I wish I could sneek off for the game. However that would require me missing the entire day instead of half a day.

Angel Fedoras?? What a bunch of lotnofs.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Those are some ugly hats.

rbnlaw said...

Couldn't have said it better, Paul.

NicJ said...

So since we won the series already would you say we are playing with house Monny today?

MeanieBreanie said...

Woohoo, today is actually a day that I can break away from work. Even better, I get the game in my market. Oh yes, it's going to be a Bloody Mary afternoon :D

GO BLUE!

Kyle Baker said...

It's taking everything I have within not to take off from work and head over to the Yard, which is only a few minutes away. I'm reaching deep within to resist the urge...

...but man, I'm thirsty.

MeanieBreanie said...

@Betsy, Mr. F - catch him if you can. He puts on a great show although he can't hit the high notes that he used to. I was fortunate to see George Harrison many years ago. You will come away feeling like you actually did grab a piece of history. The only regret was never catching John Lennon.

I have a question for you New Yorkers. What is up with Yoko's signs in Times Square? I was there at Xmas several years ago and she had put up a sign that said "War is Over - Love John and Yoko" John has been dead for years. WTF?

Josh S. said...

50% off field level, for those who are tempted. You've got 20 minutes!

MR.F said...

@Betsy, I believe it's the weekend after the 4th of July.

karina said...

Epale everyone! I think I'll miss the game or most of it, but I'm confident this is a win for the Dodgers.

Awesome picture for the GT!

@Betsy you watched George Harrison performing live?lucky girl :) . Do you know any other rock act you want to see is irrelevant?. He was the best!

Go Blue!

Josh S. said...

*sigh* We beat ARIZONA last night, Charley, not Colorado.

Josh S. said...

Going to lunch with the game on my iPod. My consecutive appearances at Dodger Stadium streak ends at 2. I'm no Cal Ripken Jr.

Josh S. said...

iPhone, rather.

Fred's Brim said...

@Dusty - Go, man, go!! 50% off? you gotta go

Fred's Brim said...

@karina - my dad's favorite was George too, I think, in part, because he thought he looked like him

MeanieBreanie said...

@Karina - Epale! Not to worry, we will cheer for you in your absence. BTW, I was one of the lucky ones to catch George.

I'm just an ordinary girl who has had some extraordinary experiences. Friends joke that I must have been a groupie in another life. I have met a lot of Rock n Rollers and sports figures in my time. Heck, I've even met some of "our sons" although I was only a face in the countless sea of people they have met throughout the years. Wish that the Beatles had been on my "meet" list.

Kyle Baker said...

BusinessPERSON's special, Vinny.

Kyle Baker said...

It's Time For Dodger Baseball!

MeanieBreanie said...

One away, off to a good start

MeanieBreanie said...

Love it, 3 up 3 down!

Kyle Baker said...

A 1-2-3 first inning!

Kyle Baker said...

So far so good!

Kyle Baker said...

Couldn't capitalize.

Kyle Baker said...

Did Vin just call them the D-packs?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Andre's still got to work out the kinks.

rbnlaw said...

Have fun in Anaheim, LaRoche.

Josh S. said...

Braves won again. I'm thinking we split with them this weekend.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

A few too many pitches for my taste. But it'll due.

Josh S. said...

"Hard to play when you don't play." - Vin

rbnlaw said...

GAARP back to the AL STAT!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This is going to be one of those anemic offensive games, isn't it?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Even Vin is growing bored.

Josh S. said...

Yeah, Vin is a bit testy. Should make for a fun...

...shit, I forgot about Charley and Rick.

Kyle Baker said...

HAH! Monster CHeerios pulled a reverse Ely on outs.

Steve Sax said...

Wow, Edwin Jackson has a NO-HITTER going on through two innings.

Josh S. said...

Hell yeah, AJ! Nice baby name!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hey, at least he has a hit. I'm looking at you, Ely.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

A NO-HITTER YOU SAY? NO!

Steve Sax said...

Edwin Jackson has a NO-HITTER through three.

Josh S. said...

"Now let's go to the fourth and with all the action here are two guys who are far inferior to me."

Steve Sax said...

oh no, vin just handed over the radio mike to rick and charley.

(sigh)

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

To be fair, Josh, he could say that about any two guys.

Except Uecker. I love Uecker.

Josh S. said...

I just sent out a Woof telling everyone that Jackson has a no-hitter going.

Josh S. said...

Uecker's partner is pretty good too, for a "new generation" guy anyway.

MeanieBreanie said...

"A ho-hum inning" Vin could not have summed it up any better.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That was a fast inning to say the least. Nice work, Monasterios.

Steve Sax said...

seven-pitch fourth inning for MonoStereos. Carlos is at 53 pitches through four, and seems to be working hard at getting working people back to their jobs by 4pm.

Josh S. said...

It's weird seeing Carroll at the top of the order. It makes me think Kemp and Ethier are batting 8th and 9th.

rbnlaw said...

Just had to jump in and wish Edwin Jackson all the luck in the world with his no-hitter so far!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I really, really, really hate Steiner.

rbnlaw said...

This game is flying by. Someone have a plane to catch?

Josh S. said...

Wow. Charley seriously fouled up that call. I had NO IDEA what happened.

Steve Sax said...

well, there goes the no-hitter, but we have nothing to show for it as Carroll is out at second.

(sigh)

Josh S. said...

No-no broken up, with no-nothing to show for it.

Steve Sax said...

one pitch, one out for Matt Kemp

Steve Sax said...

my god, Josh, you and I are simpatico

Josh S. said...

Great minds.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Andre needs a homer for good measure.

Josh S. said...

Does Charley have acid reflux? It always sounds like he's swallowing burps and hiccups.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Maybe he has literal brain farts.

Josh S. said...

For thems that missed it, AJ Ellis' new baby boy is named Luke Joshua. Needless to say, I approve.

rbnlaw said...

Gameday skipped over most of Carroll's AB. Glad the no-no jinx worked.

Paul said...

Is the thick foggy air from PETCO settlng in at the Ravine? These low scoring games are becoming very trendy.

Anyone know where Weaver is?

Josh S. said...

GOD DAMMIT STOP MAKING THAT JOHN LANNAN YOKO ONO JOKE!

Paul said...

Next promotion for the Angels:

Come see the Angels in a low scoring game! It is very big in So Cal these days

Paul said...

Just the sight of Dreifort's old number makes me fear for Mono's health.

Paul said...

Mono's pitch count up to 70. Someone tackle Torre!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Boy that took awhile.

What the hell are Rick and Charley talking about, anyway?

Steve Sax said...

@Josh S 12:01p: well, you were only 2,630 games short of Cal Ripken's streak. Not bad!

Josh S. said...

Rick and Charley are saying they wish fans could spend time on the road with them to get some of the insight and analysis you can't get elsewhere. (I think.)

I like to think I get that here.

Josh S. said...

An old man can't bend over, film at 11.

karen said...

At least we always can count on GAARP's defense

*sigh*

Steve Sax said...

Garret Anderson just let a ball go THROUGH HIS LEGS in left field.

STOP THE GARRET ANDERSON SHIT, NOW

Unknown said...

Oh, Anderson, Anderson, Anderson.

Steve Sax said...

Garret Anderson brings his .154 batting average and lack of bendability to the lineup today. Great.

Paul said...

I don't have to follow the games with gameday much but it is kind of fun/scary when you know the ball is in play and judging by the location of the pitch the hitter probably did something with it.

Steve Sax said...

MonoStereos saves Garret's methuselah ass and gets out of the inning

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I look like a genius for picking up both Monasterios and Ely for my fantasy league. Between those two, Haren, and Frank Francisco, I've got 21 scoreless innings.

Unknown said...

@SteveSax...and his strange ability to still guarantee himself a respectable spot in the order.

Kyle Baker said...

Let's get some god damned runs already.

Unknown said...

Fun fact: Garret Anderson currently has more RBIs than Juan Pierre.

Josh S. said...

Son of a biscuit!

Mother Nature!

Paul said...

Thanks Dodgers, lotnof nothing.

Unknown said...

This must be how Giants fans feel.

Kyle Baker said...

@David

Woew! thx for that perspective. No wonder JP still looks so sour.

Josh S. said...

@David: "Fun fact: Garret Anderson currently has more RBIs than Juan Pierre."

Not-so-fun Fact: He also has more home runs than Furcal, DeWitt, Carroll, and Johnson.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That's not a lotnof RBIs.

Josh S. said...

(P.S. I know Carroll's not a home run guy.)

Josh S. said...

"Of course, you have the lower deck...gold color...and you have the shirtsleeves...makes it hard on the infielders."

CHARLEY IS DRUNK.

Paul said...

Josh

Apparently none of those other guys are either.

Although DeWitt can hit a mean inside the parker.

Steve Sax said...

this game is hauling ass

i blinked and we jumped an entire inning

Paul said...

My lunch hour is dwindling down...we need to score soon.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Of course E-Jax has his best outing of the year against us. Doesn't help that the bench is playing.

Kyle Baker said...

I had no idea what he was talking about with the gold and shirtsleeves, and then seeing it written out by Josh confirmed in my mind that CHARLEY IS DRUNK.

Paul said...

DeWifff, not DeFlyout...doesn't have the same ring to it.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We could be murdering if only the bullpen was pitching.

Steve Sax said...

Charley can't even call which fielders are playing for AZ; he has to pause before saying every name, like he's referencing his sheet below

Josh S. said...

Even the Beard got in on the fail.

Steve Sax said...

no score through six innings

come on, B-team (Dodger B-team, that is, not the AZ A-team equivalent)

Josh S. said...

I'm going down there to protest the Dodgers' new anti-scoring legislation.

Josh S. said...

Blake in at 3rd, Blake out at 2nd.

Nostradamus said...

Just checking in from the cubicle hell. Doesn't look like I've missed much.

Josh S. said...

He tattooed him!

HA! I kill me!

Paul said...

Justin Miller's in?

Okay time to go back to work.

I'll check back in a few.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Miller the Tattooed Lady follows Monasterios. It's like my meme fantasy.

Josh S. said...

SHOTHODP!

Josh S. said...

Jesus, stop hitting them.

Steve Sax said...

AJ Ellis, ladies and gentlemen!

Unknown said...

just checked into the game, whats with the no scoring attitude all of a sudden?

Unknown said...

great throw out at second btw

Josh S. said...

HONK HONK
"Another mess-up in billing!"

Steve Sax said...

lead-in music for the radio show: Weezer's Hash Pipe.

Love it.

Jason said...

I just got a bunch of weird looks when I stood up in my cubicle to sing along with Nancy Bea.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Jamey Carroll has two hits. The Dodgers as a collective have two hits.

(crawls into corner and begins sobbing)

Jason said...

Charlie is coming awfully close to entering the Department of Redundancy Department.

Josh S. said...

Uh, it's a LITTLE misleading to say Carroll's been on base all 3 times today.

Jason said...

@Josh - Every time I hear that ad, I think it is referring to a traffic tie-up in Billings, Montana which then distracts me because I can't figure out why the guy would be driving there. I still don't know what that ad is for.

Steve Sax said...

kemp is spent from yesterday's walkoff homerun. he's now 0-for-3 and a GIDP.

Josh S. said...

FU SHNICKENS!

karen said...

What is up with Edwin Jackson??

Steve Sax said...

dammit!

Two lousy hits, all game. And both from MSB!

Paul said...

The pinky cant be right.

Josh S. said...

@Jason: I think it's for McDonald's, but all the KABC ads come across as gibberish to me.

No Match Light so far today, thank God.

Jason said...

Bright spot so far today: Philly already lost.

rbnlaw said...

Gameday had that ball going a long way.
Thanks, Tattooed Love Boy!

Paul said...

When is the last time the D backs scored?

rbnlaw said...

OK, catching up.
So, WTF with Torre and pitchers not going past the 7th, or hell, even into the 7th?

Josh S. said...

Say what you want about the DBacks, but if I want to buy an individual game ticket to see the Yankees play them at Chase, I can do it.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Jeez, Tattooed Lady, seriously, an 11-pitch AB to Jackson and then a single?

Josh S. said...

So, he struck out, but he didn't, and then he got a base hit.

Thanks, Charley.

Jason said...

@Josh - You also have to watch the D'backs. I call it a wash.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Josh - You forget that the D-Backs and Yankees are not renewing a rivalry. There is no rivalry to be renewed.

Hey, wait a minute...

MeanieBreanie said...

Ok, we've got another chance. What's it going to take to get a run?

Jason said...

@MRLASF - Think they'll have Luis Gonzalez throw out the first pitch? Maybe he can do a Mariano Rivera impression.

Josh S. said...

Dear Dodgers,

Enough with this shit.

Warmest regards,
Josh

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

If Gonzo does his impression of Mo, he'll have to make a bad throw to first to begin with.

Josh S. said...

I can imagine the TV ads for the DBacks/Yanks series:

DEEP VOICE: "One storied franchise! One Word Series matchup!"

Josh S. said...

World, dammit.

Josh S. said...

A baserunner!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Let's see if Jackson can keep going.

Josh S. said...

Manny strikeout here.

Josh S. said...

That was supposed to be a reverse jinx, dumbass!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That didn't go well.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Who had the top of the ninth in the "When will Rick and Charley be reduced to childish giggles" pool?

rbnlaw said...

Jeez, back-to-back slugfests.
Who'd a thunk it?

rbnlaw said...

GIDP!!
Now FTW!

Josh S. said...

For Luke, AJ! For Luuuuke!

Josh S. said...

Well, Wide Eyes has been the only productive one, so let's see..

Josh S. said...

See?

Jason said...

MSB with the trifecta - singles to short left, short center and short right.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We just keep rolling snake eyes.

Jason said...

Stop jinxing him Charlie!

Steve Sax said...

Jamey Carroll has all three of the Dodgers' hits today

Steve Sax said...

Non-Carroll Dodgers: 0-for-23

Steve Sax said...

Carroll snags a SB as well!

MSB with a SB!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Here comes Andre Ethier.

Josh S. said...

HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Jason said...

Bison BB?

Josh S. said...

Bullpen too! Joy!

Steve Sax said...

Pitching change. Edwin Jackson pitched a hell of a game...

Josh S. said...

Or not. Just a meeting.

Steve Sax said...

Two out in the bottom of the ninth in a scoreless game

Carroll on second
Kemp on first
Ethier, the walkoff king, at the plate

Steve Sax said...

My mistake, they've left Jackson in to pitch to Ethier

Josh S. said...

Shitsticks.

Kyle Baker said...

Come on, I need to get to a mtg. Hurry!

What are chances of a balkoff, a walkoff HR, and a walked-in walkoff?

Kyle Baker said...

Uh, none.

Steve Sax said...

dammit andre!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That did not work.

Kyle Baker said...

^For now

MeanieBreanie said...

so close yet so far away

Steve Sax said...

extra innings AGAIN

Steve Sax said...

I can't take this pressure

Kyle Baker said...
