John Ely (0-1, 4.26) vs. Dan Haren (4-1, 4.04).
![]() | ![]() |
COMMENTS: He looks like Matthew McConaughey and his pitching style has been compared to that of Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. He is John Ely, and in his last start, he held the hot-hitting Brewers to one earned run over 6 2/3 innings. He won't break 90 mph on the speed gun; instead, he's a location pitcher. Remember, Ned Colletti turned Juan Pierre (2010: .230/.292/.230) into Ely and Jon Link, so credit where credit is due.
Unfortunately, in the red trunks is Dan Haren, the Diamondbacks' great uninjured hope. But as Sax put it in last night's Post-Game Thread, "If we can beat Ubaldo, we can beat Haren." And it turns out Haren has a curiously plump 1.261 career WHIP against the Dodgers. But he also has notched 50 K's and is 10-for-22 at the plate this season, so let's not lose our heads, okay?

These puns are for the birds!
Let this be a stork reminder that no post is truly safe from the pun menace.
Let us never beak of these puns again.
Of course Colletti also SIGNED Pierre in the first place, so that ordeal is still way more awful than good.
/I'm not very punny.
/wah wah
I predict a win tonight.
I hope I don't have to eat crow later.
KempKershaw: there's nothing to the puns. I just wing it.
@kk
"Sure, we may have amputated the wrong leg, but aren't these new prostheses amazing?"
Just Sparrow me the puns this time.
@Neeebs
If you think they're hard to swallow now, wait until we start running out of the more obvious ones.
...or less than obvious swans, as it were.
Mr. C is right. Neeebs will soon egret ever reading these comments.
Is it my tern now?
OT: (wait, sandwiches are never OT)

Top 10 sandwiches in LA area. Langer's #1!
I'll follow this thread, but I'll also duck the bad puns.
That critic is sure raven about Langer's.
It really gulls me that bay cities didn't make the list.
I thought the critic was just trying to hawk a couple of sandwich joints.
@KempKershaw: join the fray! Even if your pun is bad, I won't talon you.
We can't quail the tide of these bird puns. It's aviary sad situation.
I was trying to work in "aviary" but Sax beat me to the punch.
Now I'll have to work on "blue-footed boobie."
This thread is so full of puns, it must be a Rancho Aeriendo.
Cock.
^ Nice "cock."
All these puns have left a fowl taste in my mouth.
/thanks for existing, and for a bit of help, Google
You toucan keep your cocks to yourselves, thank you.
I'm surprised we haven't heard from Koko B. Ware yet.
"Koko B. Ware"
Wow, that's ostrich.
I forgot to Tivo the game. My goose is cooked if I don't get out of here soon and beat traffic home before the game starts.
@DB, you could always be chicken out GameDay on the way home.
By the way, who's pigeon tonight anyways?
It's almost 6 already? Time to get the flock out of here!
Hope Kemp can shake off his albatross tonight; he's due.
I hope Ely won't lay an egg.
Catch you turkeys later.
That was a ball. Ethier got robbed.
Probably better to say it like:
"That was a ball. I hope the umpire isn't robin our hitters out of their at-bats with these bad calls."
I couldn't give a hoot about these puns anymore.
Decent first by Ely. Insert bird pun here.
Don't bitch, LaRoche, that pitch was more of a strike than the one that got Andre.
Manny with a lucky break.
Where is everybody?
Manny leadoff single, but FJL and Casey K (fifth K in Five outs so far)
Stuck at work, wishing I could roost in front of the couch while watching the game on mlb.tv.
Belliard is looking foolish
The Dodger offense has flown the coop.
8 K's through an inning and a half.
Belliard strikes out as well, so haren's first six outs are Ks
This flocking sucks.
Well this is a new level of frustration
That was only the second out of the game that was not via a strikeout.
If the zone stays this generous, I like our chances.
Too many Ks. Our guys need eagle eyes tonight the way this ump has the strike zone so low.
I was waiting for a Dodger to draw a walk on a close pitch to use the eagle eye pun. But I guess the early bird gets the worm, so to speak.
@ DB i agree, DH thinks I was being biased..HA! goes to show him...
Gameday doesn't work, i'd wish i could spread my wings and find some place where Gameday works.
Epale, everyone! (sorry for my pun)
Get at it, Dre.
Epale!
I figure, as long as we put the ball in play, we get a hit.
Epale Karina! Wish you were closer so we could watch games together, not too many lady friends who like baseballa and aren't BooAngel fans.
Dre has spoiled us, i really thought he was going to drive at least one run in.
My hypothesis has yet to be proven incorrect. Just put the ball in play, and we get a hit.
UGH.
Celts are pounding the Cavs. LBJ is just a loss away from the biggest summer of his life.
Ely trusts his defense. I like that.
I partly want the Celtics to win because it would be nice if the Lakers could beat the Celtics for a championship. Of course the Celtics could beat the Lakers, too. But I tell myself I should be more confident...
Any of the three teams left are pretty good. Let's just focus on Nash & Co. for now.
The first ball in play to result in an out for the Dodgers.
@Betsy i'd wish...maybe
Road King James!
True. MLASF But still, I find myself rooting for one team or another in the East. Of course, if the Lakers would lose to Phoenix or in the Finals, no victory would sting more than if it were by the Celtics.
Epale karina!
Hey! A run!
I understand, Mr. F. I would like a little bit of revenge for 2008.
We take the lead!
Boom! Back to back doubles, FJL scores on a Casey Blake two-bagger!
A triple double?
Three straight doubles!
@Betsy
Why do you think it is tht so many younger, female baseball fans in the greater-LA area have turned to the Angels? Because you are right; I've definitely noticed it. Not that there aren't a ton of female Dodgers fans around (yeah for you!) but Angels are clearly doing something to attract a younger generation of females.
Messed around and got a triple doube...
@Dusty - I blame Mike Scioscia's rippling abs.
Awesome Belly power!
Chinface's ball knocked over that dude's beer in the CF seating area.
"Awesome Belly power!"
Is my webcam on?
Ely really hustled. I like that.
Whoo!
Come to LA Lebron.
No K's that inning. WHOOOOO!!!
Oh, and we scored 2 runs.
I'll have another double, please.
LBJ's not coming to LA unless it's in red, white, and blue.
I imagine coffins would still bear the American flag in 2075 for his funeral tour.
@ DB, not sure really. But I'm thinking the color red is appealing and the Anaheim stadium is a place to be 'seen' rather than to watch baseball. I live and work in OC, but I bleed blue! Even the UPS guy gave me hell when he delivered my season tickets tried to convince me to switch, I reminded him the Angels are only good because a former Dodger manages them.
I'll drink to that! I'm living vicariously through your posts. Being in a different market I don't get the game tonight :(
@DB, i also noticed they have nicer gear for lady Angel fans than they do for the Dodgers.
Interesting take, Betsy.
For the record, 2/3 of my viewing household always lurking around Sons while we watch are two females - Mrs Dusty and Mrs Dusty in Law. Blue through and through!
We're playing the Yankees this season? You'd think they'd advertise something like that.
@Mr LASF they should do it soon, from what you say people aren't going to Chavez Ravine. I thought the Dodgers fans never weren't going to do that but maybe it's sort of expensive to watch them lose the way they've been losing.
Way to keep Haren in the game guys.
@Meaniebreanie we definitely live the same :)
@Betsy don't even get me started on Dodgers gear for women.
I like to remind angel fans that they are technically playing "Dodger baseball" with the style the angels play.
Maybe I don't need to say that with the way either team is playing at this point in the season.
@ Karina - I feel your pain, best stuff I've bought that was somewhat reasonably priced was from Victoria's secret. They should sell that line @ Dodger stadium!
2-0 Dodgers through five full, as Ely escapes the jam!
I Elyke it.
Hello everyone!
The Kid 2 seems to be hanging in there pretty good
I like how the ladies keep coming!
@Betsy is the same stuff they sell online?
@Betsy re nicer gear
Whoa! Hmmm. You know last year when I was in a beer line (that one time!) I overheard some young...women talking about how they liked going to Angels games more because the stadium was cooler and there was better womens gear offered there. So you may be on to something.
I don't think Drew McCourt has the proper handle on this dynamic!
"The Kid 2"
I like it!
Nice bunt for Chinface.
Back to back singles, courtesy of Manny and King James!
Manny on third. Loney on second. One out. Can we score?
Bellytwo!
But Dodger Stadium sells six-pound pretzels! Does that not appeal to the ladies?
Bellytwo RBI! 3-0 Dodgers
Belliard RBI! 3-0 Dodgers!
Haren's getting lit up like...something that gets lit up.
Way to protect the squeeze, Carroll!
who would have thought of Belly Number two, the RBI monster (tonight)?
Squeeze! That would have been sweeeeeet had Carroll not fouled it off
@Karina, actually they have more stuff in the stores. I'd been looking for tanks for the summer games and was pleasantly surprised to see their selection and it's the same price as the crappy stiffer tanks you can get at the stadium.
@DB, any chance you have Drew's e-mail, send him a heads-up we're loosing the ladies cause of the gear ;).
Belly power in full effect tonight!
Carroll did a good job of getting his bat on some tough pitches there.
Carroll sucks at the squeeze.
Why is everyone surprised about Belliard?. Ely has pitched remarkably well the entire night and no one seems to be surprised. I feel confidence issues around.
@karina
Yeah, strong showing for the game thread gals today.
I'll take 1 over nothing.
Oh well, I can't blame Carroll entirely for that AB
ely grounds out to strand loney, alas
Ely's going to have to wait for his first hit.
Oh no, Vin is mentioning Ely's shutout through five, bringing on the jinx...
Manny's gray glove with red webbing looks kind of bizarre.
KKKKKK
Upton with a 2-out single to right
@Betsy he's gonna say that's what Touch is for. To tell the truth, i don't find anything from that line wearable.
Good Victoria Secret carries other stuff, because i don't really like that "i only kiss Dodgers fans" shirt. Three reasons: i don't find it appropriate for "a serious fan" (do you picture a hardcore male fan wearing something like that?). I don't like hearts on my clothes or accessories and i don't wear slogans i don't believe in.
Maybe i'm too picky *sigh*
Gotta love a thread where you can get play-by-play action and fashion updates.
@Sax - think positive, no jinx!
@Orel - no interest in 6 pound pretzels. What woman wants to wear one of those on her ass?
@Betsy, Karina, DB and all those interested in fashion...The McCourt's need to be shown that you have to spend money to make money. ROI seems to be a foreign concept or one they have no interest in. If they are not willing to invest in the team why would they be willing to invest in introducing new merchandise?
@Karina
You dont believe in that slogan? You'd kiss a Giants fan? Say it ain't so!
Six shutout innings for Ely! 3-0 Dodgers through six
@ Karina - I totally felt the same way about that shirt! I believe less is more, unless it's runs and the Dodgers are making them. The stuff i bought isn't online, but it looks like it could come from the Dodger store.
Ely is awesome, he could be my little brother he's so awesome.
@MeanieB 8:23p: oh, you're supposed to WEAR the victory knot? That makes more sense.
I think Charlies plantar fasciitis may have just took a turn for the worse.
Absolutely re ROI. Taking no risk leaves a business dead in the water.
@ Meanie - maybe I'll text their Dodger experience hotline and let them know they need to improve their lady gear in order for me to have a better experience at the stadium ;).
Anyone else notice the first couple of games they weren't sharing that hotline number?
I think Haeger was just scheduled for foot amputation.
well at least we broke the bad and the double play.
The "presentation" this year at games has clearly dropped off. They were big on the family atmosphere/text us if you have problems kind of stuff the last couple of years (Sax has weighed in on this experience recently re: Opening Day), but this year it's barely an afterthought. I've also noted here recently the almost scary lack of ushering. Last time I was there I timed it, pretending that I needed immedaite help, and it took a good several minutes for me to walk around and find someone remotely considered a stadium authority. Lots of time for a fight to have gotten way out of hand.
Now let's get back to this one.
Nice segue, Dusty
OUch...
Finally gets a good steal!
"Runner goes, pitch is low, throw is high."
It was almost like Vinny was singing that. Made my night.
@Meaniebreanie that's what happens when you get three or more girls and someone brings up clothes. Also, i think i want to hug you "@Sax - think positive, no jinx!" "@Orel - no interest in 6 pound pretzels. What woman wants to wear one of those on her ass?"
@Betsy that's something i'll check out
@Dusty Baker i wouldn't ever ever ever ever kiss a Giants fan because in the minute he'd mention he's a Giants fan, i'd lose all interest if i had one in the first place.
Dre, get on base so Manny, King James and Belly Two handle this!
Whew. I was afraid Ethier wasn't going to get something tonight.
Andre fouls it off his front foot, then drives in Kemp. Wow.
Dre with a 2B RBI! 4-0
Even better, Dre!
@DB "It was almost like Vinny was singing that. Made my night."
I thought the same thing.
Manny is hanging tough on Haren
Great walk by Manny, way to work it o dreadlocked one
Manny watching Haren like a hawk.
Manny Ramirez > Dan Haren
Two on, one out, 4-0 Dodgers.
Clipping Haren's wings now.
Wait, it's Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 0, and we just chased their starter in the seventh inning?
He looks like a red Haren to me.
@Orel
When Vinny said that, I thought "Orel will especially dig that comment."
Dre's hair is like an eagle
His two eyes are like two doves
Hi all!
I think we need to send Ely back down to AAA after this game. This routine seems to work.
Do you think I would get anywhere with a well crafted letter to the Dodgers explaining how much more I enjoy games with fresh young talent that performs well over games loaded with fading veterans?
Ely's gotta stay. It's that simple.
Then we can DL Ramon Ortiz next time. I like your thinking!
New pitcher. Why swing at his first pitch?
MMMMmmmmm....fresh young talent.
Awww man I missed the pun session.
I feel like a dodo.
I wanna keep Ely and i want Monasterios to be a starter. Would it be easier ask for World Peace?
We missed you, Paul. We had empty nest syndrome.
Man i never thought Ely would outpitch Haren, i guess im the one eating crow tonight.
Ely starting the seventh at 95 pitches.
I never liked Stephen Drew, not because he always plays well against us but just on the princple of who his brother is.
You can always carry on with the puns. In my top 5 of reasons to hang out here is the puns.
No Dirty Projectors? No?
Must be weird for Mark Reynolds to do something other than hit a HR or K.
@Karina, Betsy - we Sosg sister's have got to stick together. Hugs back at ya!
We need a fashion forward Dodger's fan to take on designing a new line. Heidi Klum are you out there? I looked for a simple short sleeve Vneck T-shirt and couldn't even find one of those. What gives? That should be fan wear 101.
karina, I'm surprised you have four other reasons given this crowd (myself included)
@karen "I never liked Stephen Drew, not because he always plays well against us but just on the princple of who his brother is."
You just gained the respect of readers everywhere.
Uh oh, the Honeycutt curse.
At least they allowed Ely to stay in and prove himself.
Crap.
Weaver does not settle my nerves.
Oh well, thank you for a wonderful quality start, Ely. I do hope owl be seeing you again soon!
The important thing is he can't lose.
I'd love to know what your other four are, Karina.
Dusty
I wasn't ducking you all but I was hawking for chicks.
Jeff!
Awesome job Ely you were eggceptional.
Great outing for Ely. Wonder if it's enough to keep him in the Bigs this time
Weaver may allow one or two runs here but he'll get out of the inning.
Has any other Dodger starter this season had two starts with no walks?
Ely better stay.
One thing is he seems so confident, like, yep I damn sure are going to ge this guy out. Only Kuroda, among our starters, seems to exude that same confidence this season.
Shit.
Oh no. Weaver pitching, two on, now 4-1, and Snyder coming up with 0 out.
Let osprey.
Hoooo boy.
Jeff is throwing lettuce. Oh man that is scary.
Ugh.
Did he say Sherill was warming? Now that's who worries me!
@Orel 8:54p: Weaver will get out of this inning, but hopefully it will mean the inning is over as well
Sherrill is warming up? thats fowl.
No velocity or real movement at all this can't end well.
Rusty owes us a DP for KOing kuroda last year.
200
You shall know his velocity, Paul.
