Game 86 Thread: July 4 @ Giants, 1p

Derek Lowe (5-8, 3.88) vs. Sandy Koufax Jonathan Sanchez (8-4, 3.79).

COMMENTS: Oops, it's Jonathan Sanchez, not Sandy Koufax, that Derek Lowe will be facing in today's Giants-Dodgers series opener. But you can understand how I made that mistake, as throughout his career Sanchez has basically been Koufax's statistical dopplegänger:

Statistic
Sandy
Koufax
Jonathan
Sanchez
No-Hitters, career
4
4
Opp BA, career
0.205
0.196
Highest K/9, season
10.54 ('62)
10.71 ('02)
Most Strikeouts, game

Of course, in Koufax's case we're talking about major league career, whereas with Sanchez we're referring to his college career (at Ohio Dominican University - Go Panthers!). And thankfully, like most of us, Sanchez wasn't quite the same person in college that he is today in his professional career.

In anycase, the Dodgers go into this holiday game with an undefeated month and a 3-game winning streak on the line. Hopefully at the end of the game we'll be celebrating not only the 4th of July, but also the 4th win of July.

Happy Independence Day!

Happy 4th!

Nomar! Andruw! Blasts from the past!

Orel said...

Kemp singles, steals second and Ethier advances him to third.

ASO (Another Squandered Opportunity)

Orel said...

Two errors during the play give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Whoop.

Orel said...

Aaron "Not Andruw Jones" Rowand with an RBI single. 2-0 Giants.

Orel said...

I am watching the Giants' TV broadcast, by the way. With a Giants fan.

Orel said...

Jones K's. Welcome back, Andruw. High check swing, not a weak swing, though.

Nomar K's too.

Orel said...

Lowe singles (!), Kemp walks. How can we blow this opportunity?

Orel said...

Ethier singles! Bases loaded, no out!

Orel said...

3-1 count to Martin!

karina said...

Epale, Orel! glad you're a tolerant individual, just kidding!

Orel said...

2-1! Thank you, Jonathan Sanchez!

Orel said...

Epale, Karina! Family harmony counts for something!

karina said...

Martin got the walk, Dodgers 1-giants 0

Rancho Ardiendo!

Orel said...

Thanks for nothing, Kent. (Just kidding. He owned Houston.)

karina said...

Torre drives me crazy with his lineups. What kind of logic is putting King James behind Jones and Garciaparra?

karina said...

Kent and Ethier have a free card to get out of jail.

Orel said...

Jones K's! I am SHOCKED

karina said...

How did Jones looked on the plate?

karina said...

I see. He saw 3 strikes and had a ball on dirt. Did he try to swing close to the ball?

Orel said...

Why are two guys fresh off the the DL back-to-back in the lineup?

Another gift from Sanchez! 2-2 tie.

karina said...

Garciaparra walks! Kemp scores...thanks Jonathan Sanchez...

Orel said...

Jones' first AB he actually looked okay despite the swinging K. Second K was his usual hack at a ball in the dirt.

Dodgers w/bases loaded:

walk
pop out
K
walk
pop out

hooray

karina said...

I thought about it, not only they're placed back to back, they are before the player with most hits in the team, what's Torre thinking? break the NL record for RISP in a season?

karina said...

King James with that fly-out is not helping my case.

Orel said...

In Torre's defense, his choices change every day.

karina said...

At least, game is tied. But i guess you're drinking, so in the shamefully event Dodgers lose, at least you'll be drunk to cope with it!

Orel said...

That's just embarrassing. Runner on 1st steals second, Martin throws to second...and the runner on third steals home. Rare defensive lapse by Martin.

Orel said...

I haven't started drinking. Yet.

Orel said...

Fashion Police, can you see the special stars & stripes logo caps all players are wearing today?

Orel said...

Who is John Bowker? Just a guy with as many HRs (9) as anyone on the Dodgers.

karina said...

It was indeed a rare mistake by my son Martin. Giants are playing hard, maybe they're tired to be owned by the Dodgers in San Francisco.

"Yet". What are you waiting for?

I think i have a date later.

karina said...

I've seen some. I'm also watching the Mariners-Tigers game. I feel lukewarm about them. It'd be cool if they had designed some patch with a military feel, i guess it'd be more related to the Veterans.

Orel said...

Who's the lucky guy?

Orel said...

What's strange about the caps is that they're all on navy blue backgrounds. So the Dodgers are not wearing Dodger blue caps today.

karina said...

I wonder: that cap wouldn't be politically correct for the Indians (you tell me, i'm not american to give an accurate reason). How about the Jays? are they wearing the stars and the stripes?

Orel said...

Vintage Lowe. 5-2 Giants.

karina said...

He's my friend's "kid brother". But she lives in another city.
I don't know it's a date. I hadn't seen him in a while, because my friend got married and moved out. The thing is we ran with each coincidentally somewhere and started talking because neither of us liked the music (vallenato, gross).
He's called me 4 times to ask me out, after he says hi, he always says the same: Karina, whatever you wanna do, wherever you wanna be...what time do i pick you up? but for somewhat reasons, he's called on very busy days.
do you think he wants to hang around or is he taking me out in a date?

karina said...

Ethier with the HR! Dodgers 3-you know who 5

Orel said...

Ethier solo bomb! 5-3 Giants.

Orel said...

Very astute observations. The Indians logo is considered "politically incorrect" (I hate that term) by many. I would imagine the Blue Jays are wearing those caps too.

Orel said...

Sounds like a date to me, Karina. Have fun!

Orel said...

3 K's for Andruw today. One more for the golden sombrero!

Orel said...

Giants' sideline reporter interviewing Larry King, wearing a Dodgers cap: "You're not a typical Dodgers fan, you got here early!" Cutting-edge humor there!

karina said...

Thanks! (but my friend won't like if she finds out. The first time i saw him, a few years ago, i said he was cute and my friend was like "he's my kid brother, he's off limits")

karina said...

That's very funny!

karina said...

With Sweeney on the DL, someone has to take his K's.

Orel said...

"Off limits"? I think that's up to him.

Orel said...

"Share the load"!

karina said...

You sound like someone with elder siblings, Orel.

karina said...

Young, a home run here would be nice. At least a double.

karina said...

This single does the job.

karina said...

Ethier with the 2 run double! he's on fire! let's go blue!

Damon said...

Ethier is on fire

karina said...

My son Martin with another double! Mighty LA blue 7-you know who 6!

Orel said...

Ethier and Martin with timely hitting. 7-5 Dodgers!

karina said...

Kent with the double! Martin Scores!

DODGERS 8-blah 5!

Orel said...

Kent with the Dodgers' third consecutive double! 8-5 Blue!

karina said...

Pitching change. Jones is up. No much hope here, but it'd ne nice if he shuts me up with his bat.

Orel said...

That is correct, Karina. I have an older brother. In fact I'm at his place right now!

Orel said...

Hey Damon!

Orel said...

Golden sombrero for Andruw!

Orel said...

P.S.: My brother is not a Giants fan. I say that to clear his name.

karina said...

I was going to suggest he was a Giants fan. No worries, this is not wizarding world.

karina said...

Kuo is sharp! that's my boy:1,2,3 orange-black boys down!

karina said...

"Share the load", that's what good teammates like Sweeney and Jones do, so the kids look very good.

karina said...

Garciaparra with the double, no outs and King James is next!

Orel said...

I'm worried about my nephew. He's growing up in Giants territory; in fact, he went to yesterday's Giants game. I've given him Dodgers paraphernalia but I'm not around enough to really influence him.

Orel said...

WOW! The ball popped out of Lewis' glove (again) and Roward barehanded it for the out.

Orel said...

IBB Kemp to Rancho Ardiendo for Ethier. Make 'em pay, Andre....

karina said...

That's worrying. There's gonna be a way he doesn't grow up as a Giants fan. Maybe you could convince him to choose the Dodgers with the amount of young talent they have...Giants pretty much suck, but it should be avoided to take him to watch Lincecum and Cain pitching.

Orel said...

He saw Lincecum yesterday!

karina said...

I know! and he pitched awesome! it's dangerous, you know! how old is he?

karina said...

Awwwwww! so little! these Dodgers need to be serious contenders so they impress him in his formative years...

karina said...

That's my son Martin with the double!

karina said...

Garciaparra with his second double of the game, son scores and it's Dodgers 9- blah 5

Damon said...

NOOOOOMAAAA

karina said...

Guys, i have to leave, need to finish my grooming...

Orel, this fashion police avatar is really working...

Erin said...

Hey guys. Hello from somewhere in southwest Oklahoma. I'm listening to the game on the radio and just wanted to say hey. The game is a frenzy of doubles, huh? I'm going to try to post on my site later tonight, so you can get some idea of what I've done on my trip so far. Go Dodgers!

Steve Sax said...

Andruw still sucks (0-for-5 with 4 Ks) and Nomar didn't do so bad. Nice game so far, 10-7 Dodgers.

Giants pitchers have made 200 pitches today...

Ethier needs a triple...

Steve Sax said...

Most doubles by the Dodgers since April 1988.

Karina, you are breaking the Sons' hearts tonight. But have a good date nonetheless.

Orel said...

Have fun, Karina! Looking forward to your post, Erin!

karina said...

Let's go Blueeee!

Don't worry, Steve. I wear my badge of eternal bachelorette with pride. I'm not an easy catch! (besides it'd kill me breaking your hearts)

I'll look forward to your post, Erin.

Night

XOXO (guy should be picking me up in a couple of minutes)
