Game 105 Thread: July 28 vs. Giants, 7p

Hiroki Kuroda (5-7, 3.98) vs. Kevin Correia (1-5, 5.71).

COMMENTS: While the Dodgers were sweeping the Nationals to move back to .500 for the first time since May, the Giants were playing like Lassie up north against the Diamondbacks, politely obliging the Snakes by rolling over and playing dead, allowing Arizona a sweep of its own (the Giants wouldn't want to be rude hosts, would they?). The Dodgers remain one game back of first-place Arizona. So you know what this means, right? We've all seen this movie before:

  • Lassie becomes Cujo and the archaic Giants open an inexplicable can of fountain of youth whup-ass;
  • Joe Torre benches Andre Ethier for Andruw Jones just because Ethier's hair is out of place;
  • Mark Sweeney starts in leadoff;
  • The mercurial Kuroda follows up his last two shaky starts with another two-innings-and-out performance;
  • Nomar gets a hangnail and has to sit after the third inning;
  • Chan Ho Park serves up BP on the mound in the sixth;
  • Frank McCourt on a whim raises parking rates to $20 for a "rivalry" game, exacerbated further when the Dodgers Shuttle breaks down on Figueroa;
  • Levy runs out of Dodger Dogs by the fifth inning;
  • Rick Monday scares the hell out of the pre-game show paratroopers by stealing their flag parachutes soon after they land;
  • the hat shuffle selects the missing "hat #4" just for the hell of it, leading to rampant rioting in the left field pavilion;
  • Nancy Bea Hefley's organ keys get stuck on a dissonant chord after her coke spills on the keyboard, and attempts to drown out the sound with the ever-present Tag Team "Whoomp, There It Is!" short the sound system;
  • Vin Scully finally says, "That's it, I can't take these stupid lineups any more" and walks out of his own press booth mid-inning.

Wait, maybe I haven't seen that exact movie before; perhaps I'm mistaken. On the bright side, at least we aren't seeing Tim Lincecum this series. Maybe this will all turn out okay.

No Nomar. Hello, Angel.

Gulp.

Dusto Magnifico said...

Kent in the cleanup spot again?

I just dont get it?

karina said...

Sax, but Berroa actually produces more than Jones, so it's a sort of an upgrade.

I'll get to watch the game (!!!!!!) when the game between Mets and Marlins ends (hope i get Vinny too)

karina said...

Aurilia and Vizquel singled, Correia with the sacrifice bunt, Lewis grounded out, Aurilia scored.

Castillo singles, Vizquel scores.

The other team 2, Dodgers 0

(i'm getting the other team announcers, it's gonna be a loooong night)

karina said...

Bad Kent and Kuroda defense, Rancho Ardiendo for the other team, one out.

karina said...

Vizquel K's! 2 outs.

karina said...

Correia helped himself with a 2 run RBI single, c-mon the pitcher...though a very close call at home plate, i do think Martin was robbed there.

Again, Lewis with an infield hit, a shameful Kuroda throw to first and the other team is 5 to 0, with 2 outs.

karina said...

Ethier made a great catch but it was ruled as a single, so the game is six to nothing.

Why didn't Torre protest?

karina said...

Wynn with a RBI single, the visiting club 7, Dodgers 0

Orel said...

The bad Kuroda seems to be showing up a lot more than the good Kuroda.

Orel said...

SD 8, ARI 3, bot 4. Dodgers blowing another golden opportunity.

Orel said...

Seriously, why do we suck against the sucky NL West?

karina said...

Have no idea, it's a sort of a curse....

karina said...

Kemp showing real speed!

karina said...

Do you know what bothers me the most with these 7-run lead? the fact they were made with singles, bunts and bad defense. This is beyond shame.

fanerman said...

Gahhh. This game sure has sucked so far.

karina said...

Troncoso: 4 hitters, 2 K's. Outstanding.

Rob said...

What are you, psychic? It's 7-0 Giants, already, and the game isn't halfway done.

Rob said...

BTW, Karina, I am very much liking your icon.

karina said...

Rob,

Edit:

Troncoso: 4 hitters, 2 K's. Outstanding.So far

karina said...

Thanks, Rob! (but the whole idea is my avatar gives Dodgers some luck)

karina said...

After 7 pitches and a hard line to left field that was a foul until last minute, Ethier with a sweet single to the center (Vizquel couldn't catch it).

Torre and Colletti, don't even think about trading this kid and he's a starting player for sure.

karina said...

Berroa with a RBI single! Dodgers 2-Visitors 7

karina said...

Believe it or not! SWEENEY with a 2-run RBI double!

karina said...

Pierre with the surprise bunt, a throwing error and Sweeney scores, Pierre is at second.

Ladies and gentlemen, Dodgers have scored 5 runs and there aren't any outs.

Rob said...

7-5 Dodgers! On a crappy throw by Molina! Haha!

Rob said...

Huh. Not a satisfactory finish, but geting five runs in an outing equals fun, fun, fun.

You're not *really* in Venezuela, are you, Karina?

karina said...

Yes, i am. Why couldn't i? (i'm very curious)

karina said...

Blake with a double against the wall!

karina said...

Ethier has had great at bats tonight. Would it be a consequence of some Donnie Baseball?

karina said...

Berroa with a deep fly, Blake to third. Jones as a pinch hitter.

Rob said...

Just too random. Did you grow up in LA or something?

Steve Sax said...

Jones as a pinch hitter. Well hell, it worked for Sweeney tonight, what the heck?

Steve Sax said...

Rob, I recall now that you're a dog guy. Like the GT picture?

Steve Sax said...

Andruw should have been rung up on Tony Romo's 2-2 pitch, but he takes a ball...

Orel said...

7-5 Giants! "C'mon kid, this ain't over yet."

karina said...

Jones with the pinch hit RBI single! Dodgers 6, Visitors 7!

Steve Sax said...

Closeup on Jones makes it look like he wants a Twinkie for a reward.

7-6 Giants after 6 innings.

Orel said...

First Sweeney, now Jones? What's next, the sun rising in the west? 7-6 Giants!

Damon said...

this could be a turning point in our season

Orel said...

SD 8, ARI 4, top 8.

karina said...

This game has been a jewel. They were losing by seven, now the Giants have only a one run lead. Between that gasp of Dodgers runs, we have witnessed a RBI double by Sweeney and a RBI single courtesy of Jones.

karina said...

Ron, i'm born and raised (maracucha) Venezuelan. I'm just in love with baseball.

Rob said...

Just too random. Did you grow up in LA or something?

Steve Sax said...

Sorry for my typos earlier (now deleted). I just couldn't believe that Andruw Jones in a pinch-hit situation actually got a hit and an RBI no less.

With Sweeney and Jones getting uncommon hits and RBI, this is a game the Dodgers are destined to win.

Or, destined to lose by one run.

Steve Sax said...

Better than a Twinkie! Torre rewards Jones by benching Juan-for-four (who is indeed 1-for-4 tonight) and giving Jones centerfield in which to...graze?

karina said...

Steve, it ain't over 'till is over...

Steve Sax said...

Somebody please tell me that the Jeff Kent fly out was close to a home run. I am lamenting our .248 cleanup hitter who is now 0-for-4.

karina said...

Rob , in fact i've never been in LA (fact that could change in a while).

I grew up with a diehard baseball fan such as my dad, but i finally fell in love with baseball in the 1988 World Series. That winter my local team went on winning the venezuelan winter baseball championship and the Caribbean Series (just in case it's a tournament between the champion teams of Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Venezuela right before spring training)

Still too random?

karina said...

It was very close to a home run, just a few centimeters away from the wall.

Alex Cora said...

Wade is shutting them down.

Steve Sax said...

Cory Wade's MLB Gameday photo, in the right light, makes him share a strange resemblance to the Dodgers' logo.

Weird.

Alex Cora said...

Opps, except for that one, walk by Wade.

karina said...

Steve, with the right light, Falkenborg's MLB Gameday photo, he looks like Cory Wade's twin.

Orel said...

Bottom 8th. Here we go, boys!

karina said...

Steve, who's the adorable puppy? or is he a random pup?

Steve Sax said...

AC, when you say "opps", do you mean "oops"?

Do you say "whopps" when you slip?

Steve Sax said...

Karina, he's a random pup. But I will say, if you google "angry beagle", or "growling beagle", or "ferocious beagle", there isn't a wide selection of images from which to choose.

Orel said...

MLBTR now saying D'backs are less likely to land Teixeira.

Steve Sax said...

I love it, the Diamondbacks are using Big League Stew to vet a potential trade. Sort of like how the press got wind of a potential Obama VP candidate today, right?

karina said...

Steve, are you a beagles lover?

Steve Sax said...

Loney's swinging K makes it five more outs. James is a big 0-for-4 tonight with 2 Ks.

Rob said...

Yeah, pretty much random anyway. But a good story.

Steve Sax said...

Karina, as long as it's sesame, and there's cream cheese with it.

Orel said...

C'mon Blake, make this trade worth it.

Steve Sax said...

What the heck is up with Kuroda btw? Seven ER in 3.2 innings? Come on, Hiroki.

Rob said...

But a good dog, I'll be bound.

Orel said...

Casey Blake = Milton Bradley?

karina said...

Martin, Kent and King James: 0 for 12, 4 K's and the Dodgers have still managed to score 6 runs.

I feel like yelling to the umpire. Wait, Blake returned to the field!

Rob said...

"You're outta here" with your fertilizer. My First Ejection!

Orel said...

Rob, how old was Foley?

Steve Sax said...

"on-field delay".

Delino, is that you?

Orel said...

Joe's first ejection?

Rob said...

Hey hey! Now Torre's done!

Alex Cora said...

Woah! Blake AND Torre got kicked out!

Rob said...

11 or 12 if I remember. The cancer group gave us a very nice little plaque of his pawprints in some kind of plaster. I'm going to put them out back where Hannah likes to dig. :-)

Alex Cora said...

So, is "cool headed" Bowa the new manager??? This should be interesting...

Alex Cora said...

Padres beat the dbacks.

Orel said...

Wow. Our pup's ten and started limping this weekend. He's getting X-rays tomorrow.

Rob said...

If nothing else, this was a very enjoyable game from an ejection standpoint.

karina said...

Rob, i'm very surprised you find my Dodgers fandom too random.

karina said...

Awww, Rob.

Good luck to your pup tomorrow, Orel!

Steve Sax said...

Okay, so a ninth-inning comeback depends upon Berroa, Andruw Jones, and PH. Yay.

Orel said...

Maybe Rob's just shocked you're not a Yankees fan.

Rob said...

Probably just a little arf-ritis. Nothing a little glucosamine couldn't help. You can buy canine glucosamine at a really good price from Trader Joe's. If that doesn't do it, the injectable kind makes a really big difference. We give Hannah a shot every three days or so and it really helps a lot.

Steve Sax said...

hey Orel, good luck to the little guy. I'm thinking about him.

Steve Sax said...

arf-ritis, nice one Rob

Steve Sax said...

Scratch that, our ninth-inning comeback depends upon Berroa, Jones, Ozuna.

Alex Cora said...

Looks like the dodgers are in a ruff spot going into the ninth

Orel said...

James with the nice pick!

Orel said...

Thanks, all. If it's arf-ritis, it sure appeared quickly.

karina said...

Where's the optimism, Steve? Berroa and Jones have already RBI hits on this game, just saying we shouldn't lose any hope.

Orel said...

This Kuo fella, he's not bad.

Steve Sax said...

Kuo in the ninth: 15 pitches, 14 of which were fastballs (he had one slider). Three up, three down.

COME ON, DODGERS!!!

Rob said...

I wish I could claim originality.

Orel said...

You get points for introducing it to us.

Steve Sax said...

Rob, speaking of "fun, fun, fun," here comes Giants closer Brian Wilson!

Orel said...

Wouldn't it be nice...if we could give Brian Wilson a blown save?

Steve Sax said...

Beach Boys. Pet Sounds. This whole GameThread comes full circle.

Orel said...

How can you not foul that one off, Berroa?

Orel said...

Not a bad rip by Andruw.

karina said...

Orel, Mattingly's facial hair yearns for some fashion police.

Orel said...

100 mph?

Steve Sax said...

Jones is up with one out. Help me, Round-A.

Orel said...

I haven't seen Mattingly recently. What's his offense, Fashion Police?

Orel said...

Not bad, Sax.

Orel said...

DAMMIT

Steve Sax said...

Dammit.

Well, at least we didn't lose ground. Sub-.500 again, though.

karina said...

He has a very unkempt beard with a very blond hairy thing behind his lower lip (it even seems dyed).

Steve Sax said...

Rob, good to have you around this evening! Come back any time.

Good night, everybody!

Orel said...

At least the D'backs lost. But Johnson vs. Cain tomorrow could mean another loss...and a series loss to the Giants. At home. With first place on the line.

karina said...

They lost, but let's see the positive: they scored 6 runs in spite the middle order's performance was very weak, after a seven run lead for the opposing team. Unexpected quality pinch-hitting.
The bullpen was impeccable.

Orel said...

Karina, so he looked like Chewbacca?

karina said...

Chewbacca's very cute, that thing on Mattingly's face is embarrasing, he's a good looking fella to sport such kind of facial hair.

Steve Sax said...

NPUT

Rob said...

And, we had cute, furry mascot! Yay, furry mascot!

karina said...

Hahahahahahahahahahaha, Rob. That explains everything!

Orel said...

Thanks for the attitude adjustment, Karina.

Damon said...

or not

karina said...

I'm sorry if it looked like i had an attitude problem tonight.

Sorry, sons.

I'm very sorry, Rob.

Orel said...

I wasn't being clear, Karina! I meant, Thanks for your optimistic take on the game.

karina said...

Oh Orel, i'm sorry, i was feeling bad, thinking i had done something wrong. Oops...

Orel said...

You mean, Opps...

No worries, Karina! Get Coper ready for tomorrow!
