Game 35 Thread: May 14 vs. D'backs, 7p

Clayton Kershaw (2-1, 2.56) vs. Ian Kennedy (3-2, 3.91).

After last year's run under manager Kirk Gibson's guidance, the Diamondbacks were picked by many to win the NL West. So it's quite a surprise to see them for the first time this year (the Diamondbacks are the only NL West team we haven't yet seen), and find the Diamondbacks five games under .500, 8.5 GB the Dodgers. Who would have guessed that the snakes would be so happy and docile?

Pitching has been the Snakes' demise; their team ERA ranks 13th in the NL (4.23, versus the Dodgers' 3rd-best 3.21 team ERA). Kennedy leads the Snakes with three wins and five quality starts, so he's as close as it comes to the Snakes' ace--but the 3.91 ERA isn't exactly overwhelming this season (though he is 3-1 lifetime against the Dodgers, with a 4.75 ERA).

Luckily, Kershaw is as successful against the Diamondbacks as he is against the Giants; .750 winning percentage (6-2 record against each, though his 1.34 ERA vs. SF is better than his 2.15 ERA against the Snakes). We may not have the big bat of Matt Kemp in the lineup tonight (or any time soon, for that matter), so we'll have to hope that Kershaw confounds the Diamondbacks tonight...and hopefully goes as late into the game as possible.

And I'd keep an eye out for these Snakes. They may look happy now...but as we all know, snakes can be dangerous.

Try not to suck too hard tonight, Ajellis.

A.J. Ellis' line, since SFDF called him out:

Sucktacular.

His defense pretty much negates all that, Nomo.

Hideo Nomo said...

Right. I forgot he covers home plate by standing in the visitors on deck circle.

Well, scratch that lineup. Uribe to the DL.

Cant decide is No Urine is good news or great news....

Adam "I still have a job" Kennedy will be replacing Uribe in the lineup.

Trent Oeltjen is DFA'd, and the Dodgers use his spot on the 40-man and Uribe's spot on the 25-man to bring up Elian Herrera from Triple-A.

I detest the act that we're having to debate whether having Urine in the lineup is better than having Adam Kennedy.

Dusty Baker said...

MRI showed a strain for Matty's hammy, but nothing more. No DL stint. He's day to day (aren't we all?) and could pinch hit in a pinch.

Steve Sax said...

ESPN's accuscore has us at 64% likely winners, but that was well before Adam Kennedy was mentioned.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

MarlaScore says the Dodgers have an 80% chance of winning with Kennedy, so I doubt the validity of ESPN's numbers.

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Are we better off not fielding a 3B? Let's go with 2 LF's one can play shallow and the other back... Our 3B depth is nonexistent.

At least we got some good news regarding kemps MRI.

Does Ajellis have any trade value, or are the Dodgers better off DFAing him?

I have a bad feeling about this...

Paul said...

When are we getting a real catcher that bunts?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Kemp to the DL, Sands to the Dodgers, per TBLA.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Ken Gurnick confirms.

karina said...

Eric Stephen just tweeted that Matt Kemp is going to the DL and Sands will be up (Sands homered tonight for the 'Topes!)

This whole Lyons and Lofton thing is weird.
