Dodgers #4 in SI.com Power Rankings

MLB Power Rankings (SI.com)

So winning percentage isn't everything? When I see phrases like "their luck is likely to run out," I cover my eyes and go play with my Orel Hershiser bobblehead.

Apparently having pitchers who can hold a one run lead isn't as good as having pitchers who come in with a 6 run lead and give up 3 runs but their team still get the win. Haven't many sports writers in the past said that winning one run games are what really shows the character of a team? I'd say our character and team looks much better than 4th place right now.

Yeah^

I thought winning the close games was a mark of the good teams.

Did I miss the revisionist history lesson?

Wow - a lot of variation in the SI and ESPN power rankings.

I also love that the Dodgers dropped a position after sweeping the team that was #1 in the power rankings. I want what they're smoking!

Simple. Because at the end of every season one run records even out because they are so close. A first place team never usually has a better record in one run games. Right?

Then again I am just a simple caveman lawyer.

This one pissed me. You have to at least give the Dodgers a little respect for sweeping the chards and have them ranked above them. This is a slap to the face.

"The Dodgers just completed a sweep of the Cardinals without Matt Kemp, so why are they still ranked behind St. Louis? It's simple: I'm an asshole Cardinal homer."

I wanted to make sure we hadn't all gone bat shit crazy about one run games, so I did a little research.

2011 records for NL playoff teams in one run games:

STL 26-23 .531 (wildcard)
AZ 28-16 .636
MIL 30-18 .625
PHI 28-19 .596

2011 records for NL division last place teams in one run games:

FLA 27-32 .458
HOU 20-28 .417
SD 20-31 .392

So SI is right on when they say that one run games "don't have much predictive value."

I guess it's true about one bounce making the difference. Like when Van Slyke bounced a ball off the Left Field Pavilion.

BONK!

I take it back. He's a Braves homer. That makes even less sense.

I feel like it's almost time for another Stubbs Licks a Stat installment based on this.
