Colletti Now Digging Around Angels' Discards?

Well, at least it's not the Giants this time, I suppose. But Bobby Abreu? Really?

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in talks with veteran Bobby Abreu regarding a role as pinch hitter and part-time outfielder, sources confirmed to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The Angels released Abreu on Friday after the 38-year-old journeyman got off to a painfully slow start in limited at-bats.

Because the Angels cut him, the Dodgers would only have to pay Abreu a prorated version of the veteran's minimum.

Abreu had gotten just 24 at-bats in the first three weeks and was batting .208. The Angels thought they had come close to trading Abreu twice, first to the New York Yankees and then to the Cleveland Indians. Abreu grumbled publicly a couple of times about his limited role.

Yep, that's just what we need, another Mendoza-line bat for this lineup.

This is gonna be fun, you guys!

Not to throw anyone under the bus, but I do remember one of the Sons saying he wouldn't mind signing Abreu when we were at the game the other day as long as it's for the minimum salary.

I agree, as long as the price is negligible and he replaces another former Angel, Adam Kennedy. I'd sure rather see Abreu than Kennedy coming up to pinch-hit in the 8th or 9th.

And maybe this is too many caveats, but he'd better understand his role with no more public (or private) grumbling.

And for the record, I was hoping Ned's first signing under the new ownership would be Ethier's extension.

The Dodgers have an open spot on the 40-man, so they wouldn't have to DFA anyone. It's looking like either Uribe or Rivera will hit the DL to make room on the 25-man though.

But what about when they come back? Then can we dump Kennedy?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We should dump Kennedy now, just to be safe.

Abreu>Kennedy.
Hairston>Uribe

Completely agree, Bryan.

However, I suspect Kennedy will stay and Sellers will go down, since I think he as options. Uribe potentially on the DL delays that decision.

Still, it could be worse.

Stupid headline stealing angels.

@Steve K

If it was me, I'll wear it. Don't think it was.

I don't mind the move.

Bottom 9 in SF, MIA up 2-0

KC the only team in the majors to not have a home win yet (0-10).

Congratulations Jared Weaver on the no-hitter! Angels win 9-0.

@Stubbs

Please wear something this time.

I hate Heath Bell. I swear he always tanks against the Giants.

Heath Bell is not so good.

As if the 9.39 ERA wasn't a giveaway.

Steve Sax said...

Sorry, now 10.57 ERA, and rising

OMG! Why don't you start an Angels blog?

Steve Sax said...

Heath Bell must sleep in a Snuggie

The marlins are so trying to lose this game

We already have started an Angels blog. Search: "Sons of Mike Scioscia"

Free baseball in SF. Which means the Markins will lose.

They'd better start uncorking that Pinot grigio.

I love the idea of adding Abreu at the "cost" of Kennedy! But if Sellers goes down and Kennedy stays, well, its just proof that NedCo is actually mentally ill and should leave with McBucks.

Steve K said...

@Stubbs
For all I know, I was the one that said it. With all the gin & tonics, I can't remember who said what anymore!

Dusty Baker said...

Wait, where did I say something pos re Abreu?

Steve Sax said...

If it wasn't you, Dusty, it must be sir Stubbs

Oh yeah, and Giants lose in the 10th, amazingly. They outhit the fish 10-5.

Franklin Stubbs said...

It's totally possible, I admit.

Re: Abreu. I'd rather have an infield bat, but whatever.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Y'know, if I were still owner, I'd never approve of this. Just FYI.

Like I said, it might have been me...

I'd like to see Josh Fields get called up to be the everyday 3B-man. Maybe Uribe can go on the DL, fields can replace him, then Rivera can go on the DL and Abreu can replace him... I can wish!

Dusto sighting! Welcome back!

It was rough, but I stuck to my guns. Now that money bags is gone I can support this organization and feel that they aren't only out to get my money.

guys, I did Abreu wearing Dodger Blue, he could be a great bat coming off the bench and he can run, too. I'd rather see him batting than Uribe or Kennedy. Got a good feeling about this.

Wicks said...

While it's clear Abreu is on his last legs one thing is true, he can can still get on base. He has had a .350 or better OBP the last three years. That is an upgrade over anything we got now in a back-up role.

Abreu made for a pretty vibrant thread last night.

Karina did Abreu wearing Dodger blue? Who was wearing the blue, you or Abreu?

Wow, dirty secrets.

I don't recall being all hyped about Abreu, but who knows. Maybe that was my evil step-brother, Rusty Baker.
