Game 34 Thread: May 7 @ Mets, 4p

Jon Garland (1-2, 3.81) vs. Chris Young (1-0, 1.88).

Before I get into this Game Thread, let me confess: growing up, I was never a fan of Thor. Struggling through the onerously difficult language was difficult enough (I felt at times I was reading a foreign language), but skirmishes among powerful Norse gods always failed to resonate with the day-to-day trappings of my mortal* life. It was easily my least favorite regular Marvel comic, and that includes Howard the Duck.

Back on this earth, the Dodgers look clearly mortal despite a day of rest to Norse their wounds. After last night's depressing game, in which the Dodgers had leads on three separate occasions, they'll have to see if they're going to come out energized and ready to hammer, or roll out yet another Loki performance. Heck, I can't even Sif through all the wreckage of this season, despite it being only May. In fact, if I had to guess, I'd say today's game stretches our current losing streak to Thor in a row.

(*) As far as I'll confess in this blog.

When Dre's streak comes to an end, what then?

INTERIOR: CLOUD CITY -- LARGE CELL

Chewie now has a little more of Threepio back together. One
arm is connected, but the legs are yet to be attached. There
is one small problem, however. It seems the Wookiee has
managed to put the droid's head on backwards.

We'll be Loki to take 1 of 3.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

If we can take just one, SoSG will be full Odin and noise.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Young is a late scratch. Dillon Gee will take the mound.

Nostradamus said...

If attendance continues to sag, do you think we'll be Freya McCourt any sooner?

Nostradamus said...

What rhymes with Yggdrasil?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Fuck you, Aaron Miles.

Nostradamus said...

No what I had in mind, but I'll accept that answer.

Josh S. said...

They knew Dre kills Young and scratched him to fuck with the streak.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Are the Mets really that petty?

Yes. Yes, they are.

You can't do much else to mess with the Dodgers.

It's getting to the point where I'm not even getting mad anymore.

Steve Sax said...

On-base streak, nice. You caught me there for a second.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Good thing Dioner has a lot of protection.

Steve Sax said...

Loney batting second. Weird.

He singles. Weird.

We leave the bases loaded and waste two out. Not weird.

Steve Sax said...

Oh no, you DO NOT hit the Dioner. We are pissed now!

Josh S. said...

Any non-fat guy would have scored from first on that.

Josh S. said...

It's hard to get Dioner to make a move toward an empty plate.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

God, this baseball team is awful.

Josh S. said...

Oh good God.

1 for eleventy-billion with runners in scoring position.

Josh S. said...

At least Dre's getting one chance per inning to extend the streak.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Of fucking course.

Josh S. said...

Yeah, you always want to swing at the first pitch after a walk. WORKS EVERY TIME.

Josh S. said...

6 LOB after two. AFTER TWO.

Josh S. said...

27 LOB=Imperfect Game?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Why can't we do that?

Oh right, we suck.

Josh S. said...

BUT THEY SUCK TOO!!!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

BUT WE SUCK WORSE!

Josh S. said...

Well, that was something at least.

Josh S. said...

I think there was a wee bit of editing trickery in that Loney commercial.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Nic's muppet reference has Tony Jackson ecstatic.

Josh S. said...

I thought Chad and Mike were the Statler and Waldorf of Twitter during Dodger games.

Josh S. said...

Did he honestly think that was the first ever Muppet Show reference on Twitter?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Lucky shot, fatso. I still hate you.

Josh S. said...

LOL WUT.

Well, he has been a bit behind the curve. When did he actually get a photo? Last month?

Daniel Murphy uses that god awful "This Town" song (from last year's Dodger recap videos) as his walk up music.

JAMEY CARROLL BADGE

Bring on the Wide Eyes!

Kyle Baker said...

At Angels Stadium, Vinny!

Beer status: obtained a Sapporo on draft for 7.75 US.

(cries)

Steve Sax said...

(i already had Carroll's badge, but it's still cool)

Steve Sax said...

congrats Justin Verlander on your no-hitter

Kyle Baker said...

Clarification: I'm crying bc DS doesn't have that beer at that price without a line. Not bc I have the beer.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Go to hell, Miles.

Josh S. said...

Fun fact: Gee shares a name with my least favorite member of Power Pack.

Steve Sax said...

Hey look: Dusty is at a MLB stadium that has 3G access. Incredible.

Steve Sax said...

@Josh, I can't even name any members of Power Pack. Except Franklin Richards, who I know doesn't really count.

Steve Sax said...

who's betting we score? not me

Josh S. said...

Franklin counts! But only if you remember his Power Pack codename.

Kyle Baker said...

@Sax

I get 4 bars here.

There is also good 3G reception.

(sobs)

Steve Sax said...

Loney serves a grounder to Jose Reyes on a fucking platter.

LOB up to 7

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This. Team. Sucks.

Steve Sax said...

@Josh S: Franklin's codename: "entitled one"?

"kid with hot mom"?

Steve Sax said...

"Here, Reyes, don't even bother moving. I'll just hit it straight to you on the ground, nice and easy."

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'm more of a DC Comics person.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

You can only get Pepsi at Citi Field? That's as much hell as watching the Mets.

Steve Sax said...

Ryan Howard (PHI, HR) badge #76

That's the spirit

Steve Sax said...

@Mr LA SC: I'm definitely a Marvel person.

I like Flash a lot (especially the Mark Waid run), and Batman's had some okay arcs. But I never got into Green Lantern despite multiple efforts (though I heard the Geoff Johns reboot is brilliant).

Steve Sax said...

I think my big problem with DC is that the core characters are so un-everyman that they're less relatable than the Marvel core characters.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Le sigh.

Steve Sax said...

Ethier flies out to lead the fifth. Pressure's on--he probably has two more ABs tops, right?

Steve Sax said...

LOB: 9

Steve Sax said...

You know there's going to be this game where we are 25-for-25 with RISP. And we'll win that game.

And then go back to our 0-for-XXXXX in RISP ways.

Josh S. said...

This team's code name is Suckbags.

Steve Sax said...

Wha? Aaron Miles HR?

wow.

Kyle Baker said...

Is that a typo re Miles?

Josh S. said...

Aaron Miles RBI single, actually.

Josh S. said...

Nuts. The tie could buy Dre another at-bat. (He should get one more either way.)

Delino DeShields, Sr said...

BTW - I saw Thor. And I was not a fan of the comic as a kid. But the movie is pretty dang good. Funny. Well-acted. Much more from the Iron Man side of the comic movie world than Howard the Duck.

Delino DeShields, Sr said...

just watched that pickoff of Reyes by Navarro - man, I wouldn't want to play poker with him.

Kyle Baker said...

Watching Carlos Santana live.

(sobs uncontrollably)

Kyle Baker said...

You mean "ethier way" Josh?

Josh S. said...

Wow. Good thing Spank can't see this game.

Josh S. said...

@Dusty: Has he played Black Magic Woman yet?

Kyle Baker said...

Yea, and dedicated it to Kim Ng.

Steve Sax said...

Oh well, there goes the streak.

Way to go, Andre.

Steve Sax said...

30 is nothing about which to be ashamed!

David said...

His next at-bat would be in the 11th, 10th if he's lucky.

Kyle Baker said...

It's a cold night at the Yard in Anaheim. Luckily I have the opportunity to purchase a nice Guinness to keep me warm.

David said...

Time to score exactly 2 runs!

Can't remember the last time I hoped for that.

rbnlaw said...

Le suck.

rbnlaw said...

Whoa. DB in my backyard? I thought the dog was barking at the birds again.

Josh S. said...

I blame Mr. Customer's first post in this thread.

rbnlaw said...

The streak now over, we have lost the only bright spot of the young season.

rbnlaw said...

@Josh.
As do I.

David said...

It ain't over till it's over

David said...

Navarro base hit, then Carroll home run, oh yeah

David said...

eff you, Navarro

Josh S. said...

Dodgers went 13-19 during the streak (counting today and the game he didn't play). Maybe it's a good thing it's over.

rbnlaw said...

Henry Winkler!

Josh S. said...

Fuck it, it's Paquiao time.

MR.F said...

Damn. Ethier's streak is over and the Dodgers lost.

Steve Sax said...

post-game thread up.

(cries)

Steve Sax said...

(Sorry about that typo earlier re: Aaron Miles, who only singled for an RBI, not HR. I'm under a lot of meds right now.)

(Really.)
