Post-Game 70 Thread: Teased By An Angel

ANGELS 6, DODGERS 3

I'm not trying to spark memories of Della Reese with that headline (hence the picture). But it's fricking depressing, albeit not altogether unexpected, to see a 3-0 lead with Clayton Kershaw on the mound evaporate in an instant with a three-run Bobby Abreu HR in the sixth. And then even when Russell Martin nails a cheating Juan Rivera at third for the second out in the seventh, Kershaw leaving men at the corners causes Joe Torre to bring in Ronald Belisario, who promptly gives up two more hits to let in three more runs and puts us down 6-3.

So what's the tease, you might ask (besides the victory we should have had)? Well, when lady luck gives you a late leadoff single from sub-Mendoza Garret Anderson (1-for-4 with a badly misplayed ball in left for an E), followed by Casey Blake reaching on an error with none out, and Matt Kemp (who had homered earlier in this game) at the plate--one would think we could at least whittle the gap. But that's the little head doing the thinking for the big head, though; Kemp GIDPs and Blake DeWitt lines to center to end the eighth inning, and that's all she wrote. You thought you were getting some tonight. You're wrong.

The Dodgers fall to three back of San Diego and two back of San Francisco. and the Dodgers now sport a 2-8 record in interleague play this year. And you ask me why I hate interleague play. I need a cold shower.

SAVE US, RAFFY!

(I can't believe I just typed that.)

Less than 9 hours until USA/ALG! That's...that's something...

only 5 more games against the AL

Unless we happen to make it to the world series.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

(cries)

Josh S. said...

Fewer than 9 hours.

Is that Axelle Red?

Yeah, fuck me for that one.

I'm in your head now, Josh! *makes crazy face*

Girl pretty.
Dodgers bad.
Josh sleepy.

Josh S. said...

I'm not sure we ever play the Giants again.

This dodgers loss almost kills my jubilation from hearing that Farmar will likely not be on the Lakers next year

Almost.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Actually, it is "less than 9 hours"

@Nic

Good re Farmar. Nonetheless, what does it look like for PG options?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Nic - Did you hear about Kobe lobbying for Raja Bell? I would like him. Excellent 3-point shooter and could play both guard spots.

Josh S. said...

Good to know. I was just playing off the Dusty/Krusty/Musty/Rusty thing from the other thread.

Nostradamus said...

Coincidentally, PGT also stands for Pretty Goddamn Tired. As in "I'm getting pretty goddamn tired of losing. Strongly considering going back to the baboon avatar now.

NicJ said...

You know i heard Raja on the radio a couple of months back and he seemed like he was interested.

I would be all for him coming in as a bench player.

Any fill in at the 1 will do. We just need someone that can defend and run the triangle and spot up shoot.

Kyle Baker said...

@MLASF

Actually I don't buy that interpretation used by that website at all.

"we are not referring to six individual weeks but to a single period of time lasting six weeks"

Strongly disagree. In that example, we ARE referring to six individual weeks. That's our frame of reference. There isn't such thing as a single 6-week chunk of time that we refer to (as we might refer to two weeks as a fortnight). Instead, we in that example are specifically referring to 6 individual 7-day periods of time referred to as weeks.

@Nic

"Any fill in at the 1 will do. We just need someone that can defend and run the triangle and spot up shoot."

Yeah....except there aren't too many out there who meet these criteria.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I disagree with you, Dusty. It's not six individual weeks. It's a period of time that could only be categorized as six weeks. If it were referring to, say, some kind of device that for five different weeks would clean the dishes, you would say, "It works for fewer than six weeks."

Besides, never in my life have I heard someone use "fewer" in relation to time. Nobody says "Fewer than a few minutes until first pitch."

I'll walk into traffic if Gaarp starts tomorrow

NicJ said...

either way i expect a couple veterans will want to hop on the "last chance for a ring" train.

I was enjoying Russ's pickoff when I had to take a phone call. I came back to a 6-3 score. I then decided to call people who I have been avoiding since 2005.

@Nic - I think Peyton and Malone just sent something to Kupchak's inbox.

NicJ said...

@KB, Steve Blake, Raymond Felton. Im not looking for an allstar, just league average.

spank said...

What the lakers need is a back up point guard who can fill in a lot of minutes. Maybe even move Vujacic to the point.

NicJ said...

Sasha was drafted as a PG and was later converted to a SC. Now he isnt really much of anything.

NicJ said...

the other option which is less likely is to get one in the draft.

Their picks are really late but you never know.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Blake has a great shooting touch. He'd fit in.

Sasha's 6-7. Why would anyone want him to play the point?

Kyle Baker said...

@MLASF

The time thing is a better explanation. Many schools of thought say the rule for using "fewer" is excepted when referring to periods of time. This is a much more modern (read: lax because people don't speak as formally or correctly any more) interpretation, but it is accepted by many. So I understand that.

But I can't go along with the explanation re the six weeks that holds it's because it's a "period of time that could only be categorized as six weeks." Six weeks is six separately-defined weeks, and a quantifiable number; it's not one thing in and of itself.

NicJ said...

Maybe they can trade for one of the 5 PG's the T Wolves will draft this year.

The ex wife really didn't understand my sudden concern for her volleyball career. My Great uncle didn't remeber me but said to pray to saint jude.

My third grade teacher no longer is listed.

spank said...

actually your correct,Nicj. We need to re-vamp the bench and the cap is maxed already

Steve Sax said...

Dammit, you guys are so totally spoiling my post set for 6a tomorrow on grammar. Damn you intelligent, prescient folk. Stop that!

Paul said...

Hey isnt UCLA doing well in the CWS? I can pull for them now that Fresno and Fullerton are gone.

NicJ said...

@spanky, we have the MLE still i believe.

Who wants a ring?

If im not mistaken it can actually be split between a few people too. I think the glove and mailman did that when they were here.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

But your not referring to six individual weeks. You referring to an amount of time that totals six weeks. That's like saying ten minutes is ten individual minutes, when it's not. It's literally just 600 seconds that run concurrently. The six weeks in question run concurrently. They are just one single period of time.

Paul said...

Why does San Diego get to play AL pushovers like Tampa Bay.... Oh wait.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Monta Ellis was drafted 40th overall in 2005. Ben Wallace was never drafted at all. It's not the MLB draft, but there might be a few diamonds in the rough available.

NicJ said...

So we are having debates about a duration of time, calling and making amends with ones past, and the lakers crappy bench.

Man, the dodgers must really suck.

NicJ said...

Dont forget Manu.

Nostradamus said...

Yes. Yes, they do, NicJ.

spank said...

@ NicJ True. But I'm still traumatized by the "glove" and "mailman" debacle.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I still think Farmar could have been a starter if he tried. He had a pretty good game against Houston when Fisher was suspended for a game.

NicJ said...

@Paul, the Pads seem to get the good teams right when they are slumping.

TB is currently on a 3-7 skid.

Kyle Baker said...

@MLASF

Interesting half full/half empty type of discussion.

"That's like saying ten minutes is ten individual minutes, when it's not."

Ten minutes isn't ten minutes? Mi cabeza!

Paul said...

So is Brett Farve comming back?

Anyone think they wil ever make another Star Wars movie. Jaws remake? Rocky staring Will Smith's kid?

NicJ said...

i think Farmar just didnt want to play in the triangle and he wants to start.

I honestly cant think of too many teams that he could start for, New York? Indiana? Charlotte? thats about it.

Kyle Baker said...

I'm could start for Knicks next year.

NicJ said...

I would pay to see that KB.

haha.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

There's no contending team that would want to take an untested PG and stick him in the starting lineup. If he wants to start, he'll have to settle for a crappy club for a very low salary.

Steve Sax said...

Just think of the Q-tip savings the Lakers would get for losing Farmar.

spank said...

Ron Artest on Lopez tonight tonight right now right now

Paul said...

Speaking of q-tip. The Dodgers need to get it together.

MR.F said...

That reference was probably too hip for me.

Steve Sax said...

Okay guys, rest up for tomorrow morning's big world cup match!
