Post-Game 60 Thread: Sweepin' The Cards Away

DODGERS 4, CARDINALS 3

Sweeping the Cardinals...it all seems so familiar...

Once again, we had Jonathan Broxton enter the ninth to protect a one-run lead, and once again, his first batter was the vaunted Albert Pujols. But this time, unlike last night, Pujols stroked a ball into center for his first hit of the series (leaving him 1-for-11), with a leadoff single. Broxton got composed and got Matt Holliday and Ryan Ludwick to fly out, but then Yadier Molina hit a long ground-rule double that bounced over the centerfield wall--holding Pujols, who would have otherwise scored, at third--and allowing former Giant/Yankee castoff Randy Winn to promptly ground to third for the final out. The Dodgers sweep the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium for the first time since that magical season of 1988, drawing our win streak to four in a row, 8-2 over this homestand, and extending our NL West lead by another half game over the idle Padres.

Adam Wainwright was already beaten when the Dodgers took a 4-0 lead in the fourth. The crowd was sedated as we were coasting to another victory...

Credit Clayton Kershaw (6-3) for seven innings of 10K, 2BB ball (one three-run HR allowed, in the fourth to Ryan Ludwick); Ronald Belisario for the one-inning hold and Broxton for his fifteenth-straight save. Also credit James Loney for a 4-for-4 night (1 R), Manny Ramirez for his fifth HR of the season (scoring two RBI), Blake DeWitt with a two-RBI single in the fourth, and Andre Ethier for going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dodgers get a day off tomorrow while the Padres play a doubleheader in NY, and then lovely interleague play resumes with a three-game set with the Angels.

More beer!

Knowing the Dodgers they'll lose on Friday.

Stoked.

I'll worry about the Angels in due time, but I'll just soak this in for a bit.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

So will there be some kind of straight-up Laker thread tomorrow? Not some kind of Laker/Dodger hybrid?

Dusty Baker said...

MLASF buzzkill alert!

Steve Sax said...

Mr. LA SF, do you prefer separate threads?

(Actually, the Dodgers are off tomorrow so you'll get your wish.)

DB,
I second the first emotion.

Best series of the year, quality baseball wise?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I'm just saying. They tend to lose when I'm in attendance.

Dusty Baker said...

Props to Beli, BTW. Excellent outing!

Steve Sax said...

@Josh S: Yeah, I'd agree. We held tough against a tough, division-leading opponent this series...we deserve the requisite props.

Josh S. said...

MLASF: I'll be there Friday too and they're 6-0 when I'm there this season. I'll try to be your counter-jinx.

Mr. Customer said...

I actually really like the mischung thread. Itdisplays hybrid vigour.

Dusty Baker said...

If we really wanted to guarantee the Friday win, Josh and I would chat in the breezeway in the 4th inning.

Alas, I won't be there Friday but I will be Sunday.

My bad luck knows no bounds. I killed Sax's win streak last season when I went to the lone loss against the Cubbies.

My daughter is 2-0 in the same homestand. She was in the My Town section tonight.

Dodgers officials have notified me that this series cannot be the best series. Those rights are already reserved for the Yankee-Dodger series.

Dusty Baker said...

Wait, we're playing the Yankees this season??!?!?

Paul said...

Man how I want a brewski but I am staying dry so I can participate in world cup drunkness.

Hah. Gaslamp Ball put up an entire thread for our game. What a bunch of freaks.

@Paul

I did a crash training regimen with my liver last night just to stay in top form.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

"Is this on TV? If not what radio station do the Dodgers broadcast on?"

"KSUCK"

Their incredible wit hurts my brain.

Greg said...

Was not there tonight, but Dodgers have won every game I've attended so far this year.

In other news, WHY DID MANNY BREAK FOR HOME ON THAT BALTIMORE CHOP? Did anyone realize how big that would have been if we'd lost?

Paul said...

They were watching our game? Come on guys you are in SD. Put some sex panther on and go out. Enjoy your day off.

"I mean, all wainwright can do is groove balls down teh(sic) middle

Since that’s the only call he’s getting. This is why the Doyers keep winning at home, where MLB schedules 70% of their games."

He's learned of our secret! HE MUST BE KILLED!!!

Dusty Baker said...

KSUCK our way into first, Pod Rays "fans."

Paul said...

@Mr. C

cheers!! You are a pro and on top of your game.

Dusty Baker said...

Yeeeeahhhh....Either 70%...ORRRRR.....exactly 50%. Funny how that works. #81

Paul said...

No Dusty. They are counting our 9 games at Petco also!!! Zing!!

Mr. Customer said...

OK, off to tune up the puzzle dispenser then crash out.

Dusty Baker said...

Oh, snap, Paul. On that note, I'm turning in.

Dusty Baker said...

Mr C-

Im in a mtg all morning thru ~1:30 but will work on your puzzle afterward.

Greg said...

Nice party.

I'm laughing so hard about GLB's gigantic thread about the ground rule double. The funny thing is, that ball bouncing over the wall probably did doom their entire season.

Dusty Baker said...

They could have just hired Karina to do this!

Dodgers tap into 'V energy'

By Bill Shaikin, Los Angeles Times

The most curious figure to emerge in the Dodgers' drama answers the door with a kindly smile and a hearty handshake. He motions toward the living room, where his wife has put out a spread of chocolate and fruit, coffee and tea.

Vladimir Shpunt, 71, lived most of his life in Russia. He has three degrees in physics and a letter of reference from a Nobel Prize winner.

He knows next to nothing about baseball.

Yet the Dodgers hired him to, well, think blue.

Frank and Jamie McCourt paid him to help the team win by sending positive energy over great distances.

Damn, I am gonna be running on fumes tomorrow. At least I'm hosting the puzzle not solving it. All over for me but the cryin'.

Steve Sax said...

Of course...sorry, I was thinking of the Cards

Looks like I missed a great one. I saw the score after the 6th and knew the beer I had drunken earlier would wake me up to check the score again in the middle of the night. I about choked when I saw the play-by-play for the 9th.

And I had to go to the MLB.tv replay to see how close Ludwick was in the 6th. I knew the outcome and I still about peed my pants.

Fred's Brim said...

@DB - that "V energy" article is stunning. If they gave credit to Shpunt for making the playoffs, can we blame him for Rollins' double? Where was he for that? Was he off taking a shit? Off counting his money?

karina said...

@Dusty Baker liked that article a lot. Thanks
