Post-Game 98 Thread: Plunked

MARLINS 8, DODGERS 6

Jason Schmidt and Jeff Weaver both regressed to their means today, collectively allowing eight runs over six innings. The Dodgers gamely scraped together four runs on James Loney's two-RBI double and Russell Martin's two-run homer in the sixth, but a ninth-inning rally came up short when Matt Kemp fouled out with a man on first to end the game.

Maybe because of the blowout (the Dodgers were down 8-0 by the fourth inning), Weaver took out some of his frustration by hitting Hanley Ramirez on the shoulder in the sixth. The Marlins' Burke Badenhop responded by hitting Orlando Hudson in the butt the next inning, and that was that.

We're not advocating endangering players, but it was nice to see a Dodger pitcher show some huevos on the mound. Players hate losing as much as fans do, and if this loss was good for nothing else, it reminded everybody that the team with the best record in the majors also has a little edge.

Surely we didn't lose a home series against Fish. Damn. I need a nicer bookend to the weekend than that.

At least the final score was respectable.

Hopefully the dodgers pack their A games for the road trip, they are going to need it.

The fifth starter discussion is hereby resurrected.

we need a trade

Lasorda for Kensai straight up.

Is that not what you meant?

"The fifth starter discussion is hereby resurrected."

Ah yes, my words come back to haunt me.

I have an idea: Let's trade Bill Shaikin, Bill Plaschke and Helene Elliott for Chien-Ming Wang, Brett Meyers, and Oliver Perez. I'd rather deal with those screwy pitchers than three columnists that have the exact same story on the exact same day.

and they wonder why print media is going the way of the Dodo.

Print media going the way of the Dodo...Plaschke is print media...Plaschke is a Dodo...whoa!

DodgerTalk is really weird today. People are calling in about trades, and one woman said trade Schmidt for Halladay. Levine sarcastically suggested the Jays throw in some prospects too. When they hung up, it took all his will-power to not call her the dumbest Dodger Fan in the world.

Orel said...

And you know he was just dying to.

NicJ said...

Colletti sounded pretty pissed about the trade rumors.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Basically, all we learned from that interview is that Robothal talks out of his ass.

NicJ said...

hmm, that was an interesting call.

Schmidt for Halladay, that's pretty good stuff.

We'll throw in Darren Dreifort.

Steve Sax said...

@Orel: yeah, it's great to see that the Dodger pitchers have eggs on the mound.

Do you mean cojones?

Or as Delino would say, "Baitsim" Pardon the spelling.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Actually, in South America (as opposed to Mexico) they do refer to those two guys as "Huevos."

Another guy wanted to sell the farm (Ethier, Lindblom, and three other guys) for Matt Garza of Tampa Bay. Some of these people are either complete idiots or total wackos. I'd believe both.

Reflections from the stadium today.

Gawddamn, it was f*cking hot.
Schmitty looked great through 1.6 innings.
The offense again awakens after the 5th inning.
Beer is expensive, but it doesn't seem to stop certain fans from getting absolutely shitfaced during the game.
In all likelihood, the NL west will own the wildcard. This means we could face either the Astros or the Marlins in the first round (don't laugh, both are in the hunt). I fear these two teams more than the Cubs, Phils, and Mets combined.

The Brewers? No chance.

We need pitching or we will not see the final 7 games of the post-season.
Shaggy and Schmitty were overthrowing their pitches.

@MLASF- The scary part is that these people vote and drive. They are out there every day!

I am so sick of Roy Halladay talk that I don't even want to get him anymore. A World Series win with the guys we've got (Schmidt excepted, though I do still think he can be better than he was today) would be sooooooo much sweeter than winning with a trade that gutted the farm.

Let's go back to the open casting call for a 5th starter. Let Vargas, Weaver, and McDonald fight for it. As for the playoffs, I have faith in a Bills-Kershaw-Wolf rotation. Kuroda gets fourth billing since he has worried me since coming back, but he still struck out NINE yesterday.

Oh, and I'm never reading the goddamn L.A. Times again. Bills isn't going to be an ace until he believes in himself. And it doesn't help if the biggest paper in his team's town is ripping a new one three times in the same day.

Oh, you know it! Like the guy who said he didn't trust Belisario because it seemed that, in every game he pitched in that the Dodgers lost, the loss was because of his pitching.

The guy gave up 6 runs TOTAL in May and June combined! His outing on July 4th was awful, yes, but he was clearly already hurt by then. What games was this guy watching?

DeWitt, we'll see you later. like in 2 days

Man, i hope we don't do something stupid in the next few days. i really like these guys and would hate to deal any of the current roster on some questionable player. And all but Halladay seems questionable to me, and i don't think he's worth multiple active-roster players.

All that talk (and a lot of action) before the season from Machete Coletti and McCourt seemed to be about winning this year. I wonder if they have are still thinking that aggressively or have relaxed a little after the great start

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

One guy didn't trust Tron, but for no adequately explored reason.

Just from the way Torre talked about things, Vargas is not going to be a contender for the fifth spot. Plus, he's been used out of the bullpen for the last few weeks, and he really needs to be stretched out first. The most he could go is three innings. I'm ready to pursue a name that hasn't gotten a lot of attention: Scott Kazmir. He was Tampa's ace for a while, and he's on a down year which means he can come dirt-cheap.

@Steve Sax:however, *looks both ways*, cojones is also widely used in South America. From "huevos", there are some pejorative derivations i won't discuss in public.

Any trade that brings long relief or starting pitching would be welcome if not tears apart the young core.
