Game 93 Thread: July 20 vs. Reds, 7p

Jason Schmidt (back from the dead) vs. Micah Owings (6-9, 4.94).

COMMENTS: This is it, the day for which we've been waiting, when a pitcher makes his much-anticipated season debut at Dodger Stadium, where he did not pitch for all of last year and all of this year. Press coverage promises to be scrutinizing as Micah Owings takes the mound for the vaunted Cincinnati Reds, three games below .500 and in fifth place in the NL Central. Owings, who beat the Dodgers April 9 last year as a Diamondback, is 1-1 lifetime against LA with one no decision in four total appearances.

On the flipside, I'd love to talk about the Dodgers' starter a little bit, but frankly I don't know who the heck he is. Some guy from the minors, I suppose, whom I know worked really hard to get back up to the Show. Good luck tonight, "'rook"!

(Can't wait until the Dodgers' gametime? Giants' no-hitter thrower Jonathan Sanchez takes on Tommy Hanson in Atlanta, with the first pitch being thrown...right about now (the funk soul brother).)

UPDATE 6p: From the WSJ: "Among teams [Schmidt has] faced more than five times, Mr. Schmidt's ERA is the worst (5.27) against the Reds." And yet, AccuScore gives us a 68% chance of winning!

...check it out now...the funk soul brother...right about now.

Thanks, now that's stuck in my head too.

I wonder what JS looks like. Its like a debutante ball today. LOL

Steve Sax said...

Giants get the first two batters of the game on base (Rowand HBP, Winn single). The Kung Fu Panda Ks, Molina flies to left, and Schierholtz Ks. Giants and Braves scoreless after a half-inning.

Nostradamus said...

Well, if this doesn't go well, at least we'll have a convenient "Sometimes, dead is better." setup for the PGT.

Steve Sax said...

Sanchez escapes a jam as well with 3Ks, stranding a man at second. Giants and Braves scoreless after one.

Steve Sax said...

Nice idea, Mr Customer. Shouldn't we rather use this instead?

Man, I gotta stop taking the bait to negative thoughts.

Nostradamus said...

Sax,

That'll work.

As for the negative vibe, remember the pessimist's postulate.

"None of the things I worry about ever happen. It must be working."

TrueBlueAMart said...

Any idea who got demoted today?

rbnlaw said...

I believe De Witt was going back down to Albecracky.
Good news for HLACK; Hong Chi Kuo activated.

Nostradamus said...

DeWitt's really racking up the Frequent Flier Miles.

koufax said...

9 strikeouts for the braves' hanson against the gnats through 4 innings.

Josh S. said...

Alright kids, I'm off to the Ravine. I'm hoping to catch Schmidt's arm when it flies off.

I'll be in 38 field row C if anyone wants to say hi.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Tonight's lineup:

Furcal, SS
Martin, C
Manny, LF
Ethier, RF
Blake, 3B
Loney, 1B
Kemp, CF
Castro, 2B
Schmidt, P

NicJ said...

What? Martin batting 2nd? Alireza is probably doing a backflip right about now.

Steve Sax said...

Hanson may be mmmbopping through the Giants' lineup, but he only has a one-run lead (3-2 Braves in the seventh).

JL said...

Doc was offered to the Mets, but they said NO.

Steve Sax said...

But he's Omar Minaya's huckleberry!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Braves just jumped to a 6-3 lead.

JL said...

who was dropped for Piece of Schmidt?

Steve Sax said...

Giants tie the game in the top of the seventh, but the Braves come back with three in the bottom of the inning without registering an out. Sergio Romo had just replaced Jonathan Sanchez...

Braves up 6-3

Steve Sax said...

Chad'sNotRad, will tonight be Jason'sEarlyChasin'?

NicJ said...

Well the braves just blew the game WIDE open. A little less pressure for Jason.

Go get 'em schmidt.

JL said...

Jason'sWorthPayin

NicJ said...

Dodger thoughts is reporting Elbert was sent down. That's a little depressing but I'm sure he will be back up before long.

Steve Sax said...

It was 8-3 last I looked

Steve Sax said...

9-3 braves, b8

Steve Sax said...

Stan conte was the radio guest.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

11-3 Braves

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Atlanta wins.

Steve Sax said...

11-3 braves, top nine

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We're underway.

NicJ said...

Damn

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Not a good way to start a comeback

NicJ said...

Is it a HR?

karina said...

A triple, after 8 pitches...how's his change up looking?

NicJ said...

I don't think he has thrown one yet, all of his pitches have been around 80. The scouting report says he tends to lose control when he gets to 90

Fred's Brim said...

hmmm interesting start

karina said...

Basically, he has to trust in command and location, not speed...i hope his experience helps.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hooray for an ERA of infinity!

NicJ said...

Settle down.

Fred's Brim said...

woah they booed him!

karina said...

Don't boo him, if there's a guy who needs some confidence, that's him on the mound. Not nice, fellow Dodgers fans at the stadium.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This is not a promising return.

NicJ said...

Where was ethier on that one? That looked catchable.

NicJ said...

The fielders aren't really helping.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Well, this game is going to be a loss.

Fred's Brim said...

wow what is going on?

NicJ said...

Our offense can get it back. Let's just get some outs.

Fred's Brim said...

sorry Karina, they booed Manny, not Schmidt (yet), who might have had a chance at a pop foul

Fred's Brim said...

ok Jason, just one more to go

karina said...

Well, this game is going to be a loss.

Can we wait ´till the 5th to be pessimistic?

Matt said...

You think Schmidt is getting the same treatment as a QB whose O-line hates him?

NicJ said...

Haha, MLSF it's the first inning, and it's the Reds!

Show a little faith.

karina said...

Thanks, FB.

Fred's Brim said...

I know it's been a while, but walks still arent outs, Jason

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Faith is for the weak and the Astros

karina said...

Does anyone know what’s the lifetime BA of Owings against the Dodgers?

NicJ said...

There we go, three runs in the first. Not too bad.

NicJ said...

A slap bunt double!!!

karina said...

Oh, Mr. C, i forgot to change the avatar, but i never change it on a game thread, superstitious about it. Might change it tomorrow, depending of tonight’s game.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Some hope.

karina said...

Bravo, Furcal.

NicJ said...

This is gonna be a slugfest.

NicJ said...

Whew, manny is still struggling.

NicJ said...

Russ needs to steal, mr gidp is up.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Yay Ethier!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I HAVE FAITH!

NicJ said...

The weak ones just tied it up.

NicJ said...

Lol at manny with the golf clap in the dugout.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Boy, they picked the right day to start Schmidt.

NicJ said...

The dodgers are behind you Jason!!

Steve Sax said...

No HR for Loney, just a sad RBI single

karina said...

That’s why he deserves the royal moniker.

Dodgers 4, Reds 3

karina said...

Steve, it could have been worse, wouldn´t have been a GIDP very sad?

rbnlaw said...

"This is going to be a Pier 6 brawl."
-Vin commenting on the action thus far.

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

What's a 'pier 6 brawl'? It's stuff like that that makes me love Vinny.

rbnlaw said...

Anyone else remember when the Reds were one of our rivals?

Me neither.

Orel said...

Epale, y'all! Settle in, looks like we're in for a six-hour game.

NicJ said...

Can Micah pitch the whole game please.

Orel said...

See what Owings did there? Now he starts the next inning off with the pitcher. Genius.

NicJ said...

alright now pull jason out and we have a shot to win.

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

It's really the pier 6 part that's weird. Why 6? Was that, like, the roughest one in Brooklyn when Vinny was a kid in the 1700's?

Steve Sax said...

We're on track to win 32-27

Steve Sax said...

We're also on track for 720 comments in the GT

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

PIER SIX BRAWL (PIER-SIXER) -
similar to a slobberknocker or donnybrook; a round of fisticuffs, or series of power wrestling moves, that transpires between two or more people during a heated scuffle that will definitely "leave a mark."

NicJ said...

Off topic, but did anyone hear about the Erin Andrews nude video that out on the internet?

Thats what happens when you talk about the dodgers.

karina said...

Thanks for the context, Mr LASF

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Then how come there are no nude videos of Clint Hurdle? Wait...maybe that's why he was fired.

Orel said...

"Second inning after a very noisy first inning. We had collectively fifteen batters, seven runs, nine hits and one error. Otherwise, a very quiet first inning." —Vin

karina said...

I did, because i read Deadspin everyday (guilty pleasure)

NicJ said...

almost had him jason. He is working for the double play.

Orel said...

Schmidt delivers a real slobberknocker to Hanigan!

rbnlaw said...

MLASF beat me to the Urban Dictionary. Apparently, Pier 6 is in Baltimore, which would explain the violence.

rbnlaw said...

Oh, and this game will "leave a mark" on one of these teams.

NicJ said...

all this wrestling talk and monday night raw isnt even on yet.

rbnlaw said...

Hey Nic,
Can we get a link to that Erin Andrews video?

Just for journalistic research and such.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Schmidt missing high with everything

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Yay Kemp!

NicJ said...

at least we have a pitcher that isnt afraid to throw at people now.

Orel said...

Bison dive!

rbnlaw said...

Kemp continues to score, even on defense.

NicJ said...

i havent seen it, ill have to look around. Apparently her lawyers have threatened sites with lawsuits.

NicJ said...

why are they trying to bunt on a guy that tops out at 85mph?

karina said...

If Deadspin is any right, video has been removed everywhere.

I don´t get the fuss about it.

Matt said...

Holy crap! Someone my die tonight!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

How is this Erin Andrews situation any different than the ass-cam ESPN created? Is it that ESPN is not profiting? Sounds like a Disney-owned company

NicJ said...

Karina, men like naked women.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I like Nic's blunt honesty.

NicJ said...

and with that, Schmidt's outing is better than bills last outing.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

much better inning by jason. only 15 pitches and a HBP

karina said...

I know that, but it’s not like she’s the only woman men can see naked.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

On Google, if you enter "ER" the first thing that comes up is "Erin Andrews". The second? "Erin Andrews Peephole Video Link"

Orel said...

I could not bring myself to try to find the EA video.

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

Nic J- couldn't agree more about the bunt. schmidt isn't looking like Cy Young. He's not even pitching like Young MC.

karina said...

Improvement from the pitcher!. For somewhat reason this game reminds me of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”

Orel said...

Keystone Reds!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Erin Andrews nude video may have link to virus

http://tinyurl.com/kj7zj6

Orel said...

"Touched for the very first inning"?

NicJ said...

"On Google, if you enter "ER" the first thing that comes up is "Erin Andrews". The second? "Erin Andrews Peephole Video Link""

that better not be a george clooney peep hole video.

karina said...

“Pitched for the very first time”

karina said...

A bad pun, maybe in a couple of years i'll be able to come up with a decent one.

Orel said...

Vottomatic!

NicJ said...

manny time.

NicJ said...

well done, orel.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

MANNY-TIME!

Orel said...

GONE

NicJ said...

zombie nation!!

NicJ said...

O Dog can still clap, thats a good sign.

NicJ said...

you see JP, trying to sneak into Manny's camera shot?

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

To give some credit to deadspin, although folks posted the video through them at first, they took it down and were fairly mortified.
http://deadspin.com/5317439/sometimes-this-world-is-a-horrible-place-to-live

karina said...

O Dogg is still day after day?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hasn't anyone in the Reds or D-Backs organizations ever said "Owings sucks as a pitcher. Maybe we should put him in the outfield"?

Dusto_Magnifico said...

MANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Owings seems like a good canidate for left field.

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

MLASF, thats called 'pulling an ankiel'

NicJ said...

nice inning.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Clearly the switch with Ankial worked.

karina said...

Schmidt got out of the 3rd with 5 pitches. Excellent for him!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Though with Ankiel, it was mainly because he got Steve Blass disease.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

dang Jason! 5 pitches? wazzup man, where have you been?

Kyle Baker said...

Guys, we haven't worked the word, "slobberknocker" into the last dozen comments. What gives? Step it up. It's such a great word.

Kyle Baker said...

Sorry I am late to the thread. I ran out of toothpicks...

karina said...

Manny sent a slobberknocker to the stands.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Sorry Dusty. I'm more of a donnybrook man myself. Wait, aren't you supposed to be at the game?

JL said...

OT: Justin Morneau had 2HR, 7 rbi in 3 innings lol

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

Frank Parker- another reason to love being a Dodger Fan.

karina said...

Morneau hit a grand slam, i was watching that game. Switched to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc.

karina said...

I predict the All Star Bison will hit a HR or a RBI double on today's game.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Well, he got hit.

NicJ said...

Bison angry.

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

I honestly had no idea where dusty baker had disappeared to since the rockies. turns out: ohio.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

karina said...

Nice, Mr LASF

NicJ said...

what? no runs this inning?
We are slipping.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

So close yet so far for Schmidt, though I guess you could say that about his last three years.

Orel said...

Good job on Kemp holding his temper there.

karina said...

Where did he get hit?

JL said...

gaylord perry!

Orel said...

Aflac: Which HoF pitcher hit his 1st career HR 40 years ago today? (Just after 1st moon landing.)

Orel said...

"Where did he get hit?"

Lower back.

JL said...

ahead of the game orel lol

karina said...

No wonder he's angry. That hurts.

NicJ said...

just a little high schmidt.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That pitch was higher than a PHISH audience.

NicJ said...

help!

NicJ said...

oddly enough, he didnt have much problem with control in rehab starts, im guessing nerves.

NicJ said...

all we need is a triple play.

Orel said...

"ahead of the game orel lol"

How'd you know that?

JL said...

watching MLB network earlier lol. have you heard the story that vin mentioned? pretty cool

Kyle Baker said...

MLASF,

What, do you think I can't multitask? I can whine about instant replays that didn't go my way, Tweet, post on this blog, play left field if needed...I'm the most surly man in the world.

Orel said...

Schmidt still has a trick or two up his sleeve. Nice K.

Orel said...

"watching MLB network earlier lol. have you heard the story that vin mentioned? pretty cool"

Not yet.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I guess southern Ohio is prone to teams twittering during games. Just look at Chad Ochocinco.

JL said...

i'll let vinny tell you. pretty awesome

karina said...

Convenient K, pitcher´s up, although a very good hitter.

Steve Sax said...

I'll say this, Schmidt is gutty tonight.

Orel said...

How did Schmidt get out of that inning?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'd like to see Schmidt get through the fifth just so he can get the win.

JL said...

good job Schmidt
3 more outs and you got a W........i hope

NicJ said...

i hope he can get the win tonight.

NicJ said...

he has 21 more pitches left.

Orel said...

Now THAT is a story!

JL said...

see Orel. pretty amazing

NicJ said...

its like reality happens just so vin can retell it to us.

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

Nice work, CNSR

karina said...

Don´t you think Martin is getting back to his old self lately?

JL said...

big stuff russ tonight

JL said...

you guys think Owings should go Ankiel and just become an everyday hitter?

Mike Sharperson Lives! said...

I think owings could pull a brooks kieshnick and go both ways.

NicJ said...

come on dodger fans, you are worse than cub fans at thinking a routine fly is going over the wall.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Damn Irishman.

JL said...

ok big inning coming up. big boppers, and schmidt knows he just needs 3 outs. lets do it!

Steve Sax said...

Martin out by a mile CS

JL said...

haha <3 Vin Scully

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Two more.

Nostradamus said...

Hey kids, I'm back! I was just searching for that video of Eri... I mean, for pictures of puppie... I mean doing laundy. Laundry, that's it!

(No, really. It was laundry.)

Orel said...

Kemp is so good he has to go to wrong way to make it challenging.

NicJ said...

i was just watching top plays on espn, the yankees tv announcer is really annoying.

karina said...

Just one more out and 16 pitches to do it.

Steve Sax said...

Come on Schmidt, one more inning to be win-eligible
