Chad Billingsley (9-4, 3.12) vs. Josh Banks (1-0, 3.38).
COMMENTS: Joe Torre acknowledges Manny Ramirez may not be 100% (despite his home run yesterday), so will Torre still start Manny today? If so, the Dodgers will be looking for Manny to spark the offense (but hopefully won't be waiting around like a bunch of slack-jawed yokels).
This is the first time Banks has faced the Dodgers. With the Dodger bats already uncertain and facing an unfamiliar pitcher in a spacious park, and with the bullpen showing signs of fatigue, Billingsley will be expected to pitch deep into today's game.
Manny and Chad: I just want to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you...to prevent a series loss to a team ten games under .500.

Sorry, no idea.
Cheapie, Erin!
The Merkin isn't fooling anyone in SF today.
Woo! We're gonna miss Johan again!
Claudio up in the pen!
That...didn't require an exclamation point. Sorry.
I do like our chances against the Mets.
I can't stand new ballparks that put the bullpen in foul territory. It's ridiculous and dangerous.
That, my friends, is why the bullpen should never be part of the field.
Castro looks flummoxed that that wasn't a triple.
If the Padres are going to put benches in foul territory, they should live with the consequences when the ball ends up there.
"an ice bucket and some towels" - Vin describing where that ball went.
Is it too much to ask that when you build a new ball park, you remember to build in a bullpen? Or two?
Vin makes Connie Mack Stadium sound like a miniature golf course.
Work it, Bills!
And now Vin is telling pornographic stories about balls and a lady's blouse.
I never thought I would be happy to see the dodgers have the LOB problem. After last weeks series against Colorado I'm loving this.
I didn't realize i had two windows open on SoSG, so i posted this on the wrong thread but Nic j, you have a point. LOB proves they are actually hitting the ball.
Astros win. That's good.
Come on, Either! Give us a last chance to cheer this afternoon!
I liked Loney showing us some of his blazing speed there.
Somebody wants another HR.
My family has been friends with this other family, the Weiss family, for probably over 20 years now. They have two kids, one of whom is a 21-year old girl, Lindsay. Lindsay has been fighting cancer for about the last two years, and it's not really looking good. And today, her father went hiking in Arizona and fell, and had to be airlifted to a hospital. They were going to release him and let him see his orthopedist tomorrow, but his wife insisted they do a CT and all the tests for a brain injury. They did, and now he apparently has a "probable broken neck." Ugh.
Clearly my post didn't get to Andre in time. My bad.
Yay Astros! 7-1 over the Gnats.
Oh, Erin!. That's a tragedy... i'm so sorry.
Thanks Karina. I guess he can move his extremities or they wouldn't have been considering sending him home, but they've got him sedated right now so he doesn't make things worse with movement.
Erin,
That's a heartbreaker of a story. Good heads up by the wife calling for the scans. You'd hate to find out about cracked vertebrae when it's too late. Keep the positive thoughts.
Just the way Kemp planned it all along.
Chadley going for the CG.
Yikes.
C'mon, Bills, don't do that.
It wasn't a bad pitch. Way down in the zone. Headley did a nice job of hitting there.
Great. So does Joe pull him now?
Uh oh
Now everything is falling apart.
Come on, fellas! Let's shut the door already.
There were enough LA fans standing and cheering to ask for a curtain call for Bills. Would be funny for an away crowd to get a curtain call!
I think that's the extent of MSG's power.
They should have an anti-home run derby between the league's tiny men. Eckstein, JP, etc.
Erin, truly sorry to hear about your friends' misfortunes.
Dusty,
We had that same conversation last night. . .after many beers.
JP vs. MSB would be epic.
Thanks for the nice words everyone. Obviously this isn't exactly the forum for all that, but it just happened so I felt like mentioning it. And they read my blog, so I don't want to talk about it over there.
This game is getting scary.
Come on Brox.
Brox is really scaring me.
Let's hope Brox is getting these balls out of his system.
RB-
The Eddie Gaedel Classic!
Wait, that sounded weird.
Wow, tomorrow's off-day can't come soon enough.
*&##$%$@@*&##$%$@@
This is crazy.
Oh lord. Now I'm on edge.
ouch
Oh my god! That pitch was strike three to Martin, but it's ball four to walk in a run? Good lord, that is some major league bullshit.
MLB!
Caballito in favor of oppsoing teams is not any fun.
Exactly, Orel.
Games like this make me grateful that I opted not to play fantasy baseball this season. I would likely have Broxton on my team and be pissed about his stats. But now I can just hope he gets us out of this any way possible, and I don't care about the runs he's allowed.
That shirtless Padres fan is douchier than your usual douchebag Padres fan.
Broxton's velocity is down (relatively). TV radar said 94 mph on that last pitch.
Oh my lord.
WTF
This is unbelievable.
So much for my Post-Game Thread.
Maybe he wasn't properly warmed up when they got him in the game.
Or maybe a runner at second wasn't enough reason for Torre to pull Billingsley.
That's our all star reliever!
This is the Padres! Why don't the Dodgers understand that?
I'm shaking right now. This is absolute bullshit. My face is red, and I'm about ready to destroy all of my possessions.
In case you were thinking about heading downtown on Tuesday (from, of all places, "The Times of India"):
"Meanwhile, the city officials have asked Michael Jackson’s fans to avoid coming to the Staples Centre for Tuesday’s memorial unless they have the tickets. The city officials are bracing up for a major security drive to handle a massive crowd as thousands of Jackson devotees are expected to descend on the Staples Centre despite the organiser’s announcement that only people with a ticket will be allowed inside the venue.
The law enforcement agencies are expecting that anywhere from 250,000 to 700,000 people may try to reach the venue for the Tuesday memorial. "
Eh, broxton was bound to blow a save sooner or later. I feel really bad for bills though.
Glad I skipped a family picnic for this.
I'm going to the gym.
It's like we just let a little league team beat us.
well, funny thing is, it's not really a blown save
I was having flashbacks to two years ago when Broxton had to close a game in PETCO.
Brox is a human being and he deserves to commit mistakes. Having said that, such mistakes before the Pads are depressing and unacceptable.
Brox didn't lose the game because Alfonzo is a turtle-like runner.
Yeah, there's no reason Pierre should be batting for himself here. This is absurd.
At least he infield-singles.
Orel, painfully, your profecy of the potential regret coming of leaving Rancho Ardiendo runners without scoring, became true.
Perhaps the most disturbing headline of all time:
Jackson to Be Buried Without His Brain
Vinny just keeps pushing my buttons.
Damn it. For a half-second I thought Loney had given us the lead.
It all rests on Beard's shoulders.
I hate when loney hits it dead on but only hits it half-heartedly.
I can just see Pierre getting picked off.
Come on, Beard Mode!
Hopefully Bell doesn't have as much since we tried to run up the pitch count on him in yesterday's loss.
Do people in San Diego understand how a pick-off works? They all booed when Bell threw to first and Pierre got back, but A-Gon didn't even apply a tag.
Seems like the zone has gotten big again.
Fans always boo when a pitcher throws over. It was probably L.A. fans booing at him for wasting time.
Beard Mode!
Now it's up to Ethier.
Alright andre. Be the hero again.
I'd take a WP right here.
Ethier's turning into Adam Dunn.
Ethier needs some patience. One HR and he's Babe Ruth at the rest of his at bats that day.
Damn it. Of course the Padres have suddenly turned into a dream team.
Fuck
ARGH!
Bell does seem hittable today. Hang in there, lads!
No...no, no, no, Torre, no, no, bad manager, do not use Belly after he imploded yesterday, bad Torre. That's a huge mistake.
What the hell happened here? I leave with a five-run lead in the ninth and we blow it?
Why, Brox?
Fan-fucking-tastic.
This is working out just fine.
Belly hits Chase Frickin Headley, this game is over. We want to lose.
On the bright side, this may force manager to actively pursue bullpen help.
Whew, Loney catches that bad bunt.
Come on, let's get this fidgety little tike out.
Nic - we have bullpen help. They're Vargas, Weaver, Leach, Mota (yes even Mota) and J-Mac.
Sure, Torre might not feel comfortable with using Vargas in such a close game, but that's when you give him garbage time in the ninth!
Belly just walked the winning run to second.
MSB is gonna get revenge on us here
belly walks MSB
Eckstein does know it's called a "walk", right? He doesn't have to haul ass to first.
We CANNOT end the weekend this way. Fuck me runnin', Torre. This is all because you let Bill talk you into going for a complete game.
Belly, what happened yesterday is in the past.
Pray...for...mojo.
Belly, sit.
Mora, stop this disaster .
Brox should offer Bills one free punch in the location of his choosing.
Robothal is gonna have a field day with this game.
"Dodgers pitching has been very generous." -Vin
Understatement, man, understatement.
Oh for the love of Jeff.
YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!
Didn't we get this out of our system yesterday? Is it some type of joke?
Potential worst loss of the season?
Martin, nice time for a PB
Whew, nicely done, Mota.
Just one out...
Two out, IBB to Gonzo, but we're still gonna lose...
There's hardly any Pods fans to boo the IBB.
I don't even know if they should win. A win would just feel dirty, like "do we really want this to look like a good thing?"
Going to Leach now.
If we lose this game, we should suspend Manny again.
Nice game to sit Manny, too
I can't believe I'm putting off my mountain of work for this.
Let's go Leach.
The sandwich move in that buffalo ranch chicken sandwich commercial is just the cheesiest thing I can imagine.
[I criticize commercials when I'm nervous.]
Whew. Now when does Manny pinch-hit?
Like he's attached to a Bart-Simpson-version of Mozart, Leach sucks the life out of the Padres.
Okay, but who's hyped up for the big Rays/Rangers game on ESPN tonight?
Manny pinch hit time?
How sore is Manny that we can't drop his sore ass into the lineup??
We don't deserve to win this game.
6-6 after 10 innings
Steve, it ain't over 'till it's over.
Erin, i know what you mean, i'm supposed to write a book review which i haven't started because of the game (and it's every Sunday beauty maintenance day)
Erin,
Sadly, I am. Because that's it for the weekend, mainly.
Weak pitching, HR fest...what's not to like?
Well, I'm sure whoever plays against the Pods tomorrow or Tuesday will thank us for taking Bell out of commision.
Way to go, Martin.
First pitch pop-ups always win games.
THANK GOD MANNY'S ON DECK.
Yeah, Dusty, I was being sarcastic, but I'm likely to tune in as well, if only to put off my work.
Karina, I'm glad you have a beauty regimen. I, on the other hand, put Christine on a plane today and have already fully embraced the bachelor lifestyle. I haven't even showered yet.
Nice job, Martin. You're always such a help.
Manny out on deck.
"Okay, but who's hyped up for the big Rays/Rangers game on ESPN tonight?"
Me. But only because i'm obsessed with baseball and it's necessary and compulsory i watch every game i can.
Im just glad to see a game on espn that doesn't include the Yankees or Red Sox.
I almost forgot Martin was playing today until he popped up with that popup.
That's it, Kemp. Just think "What would Martin do?" and do the opposite.
That's Russell Martin: bringing you unmemorable at-bats since mid-2008.
Nicj,
But you know they'll talk ceaselessly about Yanks and Red Sox nonetheless. The broadcast doesn't actually have to include either or both teams for the commentators to carry on about them ad infinitum.
People, you're harsh and merciless...
It's all up to the dreadlocked bench player.
If I were the Padres, now would be the time for an IBB.
Oh how I loath Tony Gwynn today.
Well, that seems about right.
SD fans furiously taking pics of Manny.
Great. Gwynn with two great plays to end the inning. Love it when everyone swings at the first pitch.
Let's just lose it in the bottom of the inning here, boys.
What a f'ing waste of a manny at bat
shit, we are deadset on managing this game to a big fat loss
And now O-Dog has to be put in.
So who did Manny bat for? Castro? So that was all we're getting from Ramirez today? Unbelievable.
Torre has managed this game about like I would after 12 pints.
So, if we make it to the 12th: O-Dog, Furcal, and Pierre?
This
sucks
we
can't
beat
the
padres
So much for the Weaver emergency start this week.
Good lord. We have seventeen hits today?
A buzz saw just came out of that bat.
Having trouble convincing myself that this is only a game...
He couldn't have swung like that in the ninth?
Hudson, Furcal, Pierre will be up in the twelfth.
Vin always saves his colorful analogies for the worst things.
This is so maddening.
Great...awful redeye flight before the NY series. Not a good setup.
They get a nice chartered flight and a day off tomorrow. Something tells me they'll be all right.
Pierre looks so weird with the red cap under his helmet.
Three up, three down for the dodgers
we should be ashamed
Man, that Honda javelin commercial really freaks me out every time.
I don't get that Honda commercial. Am I supposed to laugh that a guy gets impaled in the leg?
Yay, the pro-union commercial again!
re Honda javelin commercial:
I was about to whine about it untul they put on that jingoistic tripe again advertising...what...USA? *mute*
Vinny, the overslide at third...we got it.
This ballpark is not made for 5 o'clock baseball.
That's a pro-union commercial? I couldn't even watch the whole thing to find out its intent. I'm certainly not anti-union, but a commercial like that could change my mind.
People, the Dodgers are performing dreadful on the field. Do we really have to be like them too? It ain't over 'till it's over.
I thought that was a Stater Bros. commercial.
How is it possible that the city of Los Angeles is actually going to pay for the Jackson memorial? If the family insists on doing it, why aren't they paying?
What do women want in a man? What an entirely fresh theme to be exploring in this new romantic comedy offering. What will those wacky Hollywood studios come up with next? They've really outdone themselves with this one.
*pulls the shutters*
**SPOILER**
Something tells me that Heigl will fall in love with Butler in that movie.
Eckstein is hurt. Guess even miniature muscles can tear.
MSB is hurt?
That's a bad omen, for us.
NO! Now Erin has ruined the movie for me!
They have a catcher playing second base. This could be interesting.
Everyone hit it to second base!!!
"How is it possible that the city of Los Angeles is actually going to pay for the Jackson memorial? If the family insists on doing it, why aren't they paying?"
Right. How will 1000+ police officers be in the memorial is disturbing. How about the safety for the alive?
Last of the Mujicas
Mr. LASF, you landed #400 without trying?
Dodgers: 1-2 when a game enters 13th inning.
I've quite trying, Karina.
